Author: Gide, Andre
Date and Place of birth:
b. Nov. 22, 1869, Paris, France d. Feb. 19, 1951, Paris, France Life and Works:
As his family was wealthy, he was able to devote himself to writing. His first prose work was the symbolist influenced, anonymously authored The Notebooks of Andre Walter , but by 1900 he had practically abandoned poetry. Gide fell in love with his cousin, the devoutly Protestant Madeleine Rondeaux, but the family separated them. In 1895, following his mother's death, Gide married Madeleine, who inspired a number of his works. Although they loved each other, their marriage was unconsummated. In 1893 and 1894 Gide traveled to North Africa, learning different moral and sexual conventions which gave basis for his psychological novels The Immoralist (1902) and Strait is the Gate (1909). In Algeria he met Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, who shocked him with their boldness and precipitated his revolt against his puritanical background. It was here that he realised that he was homosexual. Henceforth his work lived on the never resolved tensions between a strict artistic discipline, a puritanical moralism, and the desire for unlimited sensual indulgence and abandonment to life.

ANDRE GIDE
Through his works, especially his fiction, Gide not only presented the problems and conditions of modern man but also renovated narrative genres and ways of seeing and feeling the world.

Early Life
André Gide was born in Paris, France, on November 22, 1869. His father, a Huguenot of great integrity and piety from southwestern France, was a brilliant jurist and professor at the Paris Law School. Despite a certain aloofness, it was he who read secular books aloud to André. Andrés mother, on the other hand, was more interested in his religious education and read selections from the Bible to him. Of noble character and puritanical Calvinism and born into a traditional family of rich bourgeois businessmen and industrialists, she was an austere woman, who ran household and life in too strict a fashion. Thus, after his father died in 1880, when Andréwas almost eleven, he increasingly rebelled against her domineering authority.
At the same time Gide fell chastely in love with his elder cousin. Madeleine Rondeaux was a gentle, melancholy, and frail girl whom Gide saw as the embodiment of moral perfection and whose approval and esteem he desperately sought. Together they read the Bible and the Gospels as brother and sister, and thus she reinforced his concepts of good and evil, salvation and damnation. Twice, however, she refused to marry him. To prove to her the depth of his adoration, and to be a published author by age twenty-one, he set out to write a work which was to become Les Cahiers d’André Walter (1891; The Notebooks of André Walter, 1968). This quasi-autobiographical novel shows the new mal du siècle’s Manichaean struggle between the soul and the flesh and the soul’s final victory. Gide had found his vocation, his themes, and his style.

A Starter Course on Andre Gide
Why the Interest?
Gide was a character. He was well-off financially and didn't have to pursue any type of career. Nevertheless he took his writing very seriously. I ran across various quotes from his works and found them very insightful. By the way, he is one of two authors whose entire body of work was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum , which means at the time of his death Roman Catholics were forbidden to read his writings. Brief bio sketch
Andre Gide was born in Paris, France on November 22, 1869. He married a cousin in 1895 and they were married 42 years believed to be the longest unconsumated marriage in recorded history. He became a writer and published an interesting variety of literature, including plays, journals, fiction, and autobiographical material. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947. He died in 1951. Online References

Select Quotes from Andre Gide
Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But since no one was listening, everything must be said again. Andre Gide When one has begun to write, the hardest thing is to be sincere. Essential to mull over that idea and to define artistic sincerity. Meanwhile, I hit upon this: the word must never precede the idea. Or else: the word must always be necessitated by the idea. It must be irresistible and inevitable; and the same is true of the sentence, of the whole work of art. And for the artist's whole life, for his vocation must be irresistible. Journals, 31 Dec 1891 Knowing how to free oneself is nothing; it's being free that is hard. Gide in The Immoralist On writing the Immoralist: "I have lived it for four years and have written it to put it behind me. I suffer a book as one suffers an illness. I now respect only the books that all but kill their authors. It might flippantly be said that the figure of Prometheus has particularly interested the French because he suffered from a particularly French ailmentliver trouble. Justin O'Brien, "Portrait of Andre Gide" I would give my life for God to exist. Yes, that makes sense. But giving my life to prove that God exists makes no sense at all. It simply has no meaning.
