Ven. William Knight
Put to death for the Faith at York , on 29 November, 1596; with him also suffered Venerables George Errington of Herst, William Gibson of Ripon, and William Abbot of Howden, in Yorkshire. William Knight was the son of Leonard Knight and lived at South Duffield, Hemington. On coming of age he claimed some property, left to him by his father, from his uncle, a Protestant , who denounced him to the authorities for being a Catholic; he was at once seized and committed to the custody of Colyer, a pursuivant, who treated him with indignity and severity. He was sent in October, 1593, to York Castle, where William Gibson and George Errington were already confined, the latter having been arrested some years previously for participation in a rising in the North. A certain Protestant clergyman chanced to be among their fellow prisoners. To gain his freedom he had recourse to an act of treachery: feigning a desire to become a Catholic, he won the confidence of Knight and his two companions, who explained the Faith to him. With the connivance of the authorities, he was directed to one Henry Abbot , then at liberty, who endeavoured to procure a priest to reconcile him to the Church.

William Gibson
Gibson's view of a very probable downside future was a satirical criticism of current trends. Somehow, it touched a nerve and triggered a cascade of intelligent inquiry and practical experimentation. There's no end of discussion which ranges from literary to practical to psychological about the implications of our new found powers. The fact is that we are building another reality.
Henry W.Targowski
William Gibson is an American science fiction author living in Vancouver, Canada. He was born near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA, in 1948. Gibson is married with Deborah Gibson, and they have 2 children. Gibson has been writing short stories since the 70's, and he had a few vague ideas as early as 1976, the year he wrote his first published story 'Fragments Of A Hologram Rose', which mixes end-of-an-affair melancholy with an early take on virtual reality. But it wasn't quite working, so he gave up and spent 1977 buying punk 45s. Gibson's first novel

65 cm of textual materials. William Gibson is generally recognized as the most important science fiction writer to emerge in the 1980s. His first novel, Neuromancer , is the first novel ever to win the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick awards. Neuromancer which has been considered to be one of the influential science fiction novels written in the last twenty five years inspired a whole new genre in science fiction writing referred to as "cyberpunk". Gibson was born in 1948 in Conway, South Carolina. He moved to Toronto in the late 1960s and then to Vancouver in the early 1970s. Gibson studied English at the University of British Columbia. He began writing science fiction short stories while at UBC. In 1979 Gibson wrote "Johnny Mnemonic" which was published in Omni magazine. An editor at Ace books encouraged him to try writing a novel. This novel would become

William Gibson offers 'Pattern Recognition'

Special to CNN
William Gibson Story Tools RELATED William Gibson NEW YORK (CNN) William Gibson's early works, such as the novel "Neuromancer" and the story collection "Burning Chrome," were characterized by eerily accurate premonitions of the future. But while time marched forward, Gibson appeared to be moving backwards to the present in more recent novels such as "Idoru" and "All Tomorrow's Parties." Of course, there's another way to look at it: Maybe the present has caught up with Gibson's vision of the future. Gibson himself has a simpler explanation, though. "I think what's actually happening is I'm just being more overt in terms of what I've always been doing," Gibson says in a telephone interview from his home in Vancouver, British Columbia, discussing his eighth book, "Pattern Recognition" (Putnam). "When I began to write fiction that I knew would be published as science fiction, [and] part of what I brought to it was the critical knowledge that science fiction was always about the period in which it was written. '1984' is really about 1948. It can't really be understood outside the historical context of 1948."

Corrections Riding shotgun with William Gibson In a new documentary, the archetypal cyberpunk author displays his new obsession: Media, not technology. By Andrew Leonard Sitting in the back of a limousine, alternately smoking a cigarette or smiling at the unexpected results of his own eloquence, William Gibson looks comfortable. That's a good thing, too, since the vast majority of "No Maps For These Territories" an 88-minute documentary about the science-fiction author that screened at this year's Slamdance festival is shot, literally, on the road. As he reclines, protected by his seatbelt, and occasionally, by a pair of dark sunglasses, he exists in nowheresville. We don't know where Gibson's going or where he's been. Every now and then we glimpse a freeway sign or some shimmery neon. Director Mark Neale also likes to play visual tricks overlaying images across the car windows that are obviously not the local landscape. Neale has a background in music video, and he employs plenty of MTV jumpiness to illustrate his narrative. The general effect is unsettling we're always moving, but never getting anywhere. But the technique also helps concentrate the viewer on what's important Gibson's words: his elaborations on the act of writing, his personal history, drugs, religion, pornography and, of course, the Internet, or, to use the word that most everybody knows by now Gibson coined, cyberspace.

The cyberpunk «movement» is now more than a decade old. One could say that it has entered a second phase, which is more developed and quite different from its beginnings. Do you have a name for this second phase? How do you see it today?
I’ve always been quite dubious of the idea of a cyberpunk “movement”. There was, historically, a cyberpunk “group” in the Eighties: myself , Bruce Sterling, Lewis Shiner, perhaps John Shirley and Rudy Rucker. But the term itself didn’t emerge from that group; it was applied, from the outside, as journalistic/critical label, one I immediatly distrusted. Today the term is of less value as a literary label than as an identifier of a particular tendency or flavor in popular culture. One can say “that video has a sort of cyberpunk feel,” and be understood. Beyond that, it’s become something of a joke, as wonderfully demonstrated, not too long ago, by Billy Idol’s Cyberpunk album.
