Kahlil Gibran 1883-1931
Poet, philosopher, and artist, was born in Lebanon, a land that has produced many prophets. The millions of Arabic-speaking peoples familiar with his writings in that language consider him the genius of his age. But he was a man whose fame and influence spread far beyond the Near East. His poetry has been translated into more than twenty languages. His drawings and paintings have been exhibited in the great capitals of the world and compared by Auguste Rodin to the work of William Blake In the United States, which he made his home during the last twenty years of his life, he began to write in English. The Prophet and his other books of poetry, illustrated with his mystical drawings, are known and loved by innumerable Americans who find in them an expression of the deepest impulses of man's heart and mind. This quotation is from The Prophet's dust jacket, published by Knopf, NY

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) Lebanese-American philosophical essayist, novelist, mystical poet, and artist. In the 1960s Gibran's works influenced especially American popular culture. He also illustrated a number of his books with his own drawings. Gibran believed that if a sensible way of living and thinking could be found, people would have mastery over their lives. "The human heart cries out for help; the human soul implores us for deliverance; but we do not heed their cries, for we neither hear nor understand. But the man who hears and understands we call mad, and flee from him." In 1904 Gibran had his first art exhibition in Boston. His first book, AL-MUSIQA (1905) was about music. It was followed by two collections of short stories and a novelette in 1912. From 1908 to 1910 he studied art in Paris with August Rodin. In 1912 he settled in New York, where he devoted himself to writing and painting. Though concerned with the transcendental in his books, the basic subject in Gibran's art was naked human bodies, tenderly intertwined . Gibran's early works were written in Arabic and are considered central to the development of modern Arabic literature. Gibran also wrote for journals published by the Lebanese and Arab communities in the U.S. From 1918 he wrote mostly in English and managed to revolutionize the language of poetry in the 1920s and 1930s. His first book for the publishing company Alfred Knopf was THE MADMAN (1918), a slim volume of aphorisms and parables written in biblical cadence somewhere between poetry and prose. Usually Gibran used prophetic tone to condemn the evils that torment his homeland or threaten the humankind. His style, a combination of beauty and spirituality, became known as 'Gibranism'.

Kahlil Gibran of America
by Dr. Suheil Bushrui I believe in you, and I believe in your destiny.
I believe that you are contributors to this
new civilization.
I believe that you have inherited from your
forefathers an ancient dream, a song, a
prophecy, which you can proudly lay as a
gift of gratitude upon the lap of America.
I believe that you can say to the Founders of
this great nation, "Here I am, a youth, a
young tree, whose roots were plucked from the hills of Lebanon, yet am I deeply rooted here, and I will be fruitful. -Kahlil Gibran In a recent edition of the program on network television, Barbara Walters interviewed the man who more than anyone else today symbolizes the best of America, General Norman Schwarzkopf. Viewers were given a rare glimpse of the great man's private world, including a pile of books on the table by his bed. On top of the pile, clearly picked out by the camera, was a slim volume called The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. That General Schwarzkopf should give pride of place to this particular book among his bedside reading is perhaps not so very surprising, since millions of Americans have done likewise over the seven decades since it was first published, and only the Bible has sold more copies in America this century. Indeed, The Prophet has a colossal readership all over the world, having been translated into a host of different languages. Nevertheless, this most intimate of works remains a book for individuals rather than multitudes. And its presence by the bedside of an individual such as the General provides the best evidence of where its author stands in the conscience of the nation.

Khalil Gibran (1883-1931)
At the age of eight, Khalil Gibran, Gibran's father, was accused of tax evasion and was sent to prison as the Ottomon authorities confiscated the Gibrans' property and left them homeless. The family went to live with relatives for a while; however, the strong-willed mother decided that the family should immigrate to the U.S., seeking a better life and following in suit to Gibran's uncle who immigrated earlier. The father was released in 1894, but being an irresponsible head of the family he was undecided about immigration and remained behind in Lebanon. On June 25, 1895, the Gibrans embarked on a voyage to the American shores of New York. The Gibrans settled in Boston's South End, which at the time hosted the second largest Syrian community in the U.S. following New York. The culturally diverse area felt familiar to Kamila, who was comforted by the familiar spoken Arabic, and the widespread Arab customs. Kamila, now the bread-earner of the family, began to work as a peddler on the impoverished streets of South End Boston. At the time, peddling was the major source of income for most Syrian immigrants, who were negatively portrayed due to their unconventional Arab ways and their supposed idleness. In the school, a registration mistake altered his name forever by shortening it to Kahlil Gibran, which remained unchanged till the rest of his life despite repeated attempts at restoring his full name. Gibran entered school on September 30, 1895, merely two months after his arrival in the U.S. Having no formal education, he was placed in an ungraded class reserved for immigrant children, who had to learn English from scratch. Gibran caught the eye of his teachers with his sketches and drawings, a hobby he had started during his childhood in Lebanon.
