Stefan George Stefan George war und bleibt für viele ein Ärgernis. Doch seine dichterische Meisterschaft kann nicht bestritten werden. S tefan George wurde am 2. Juli 1868 in Büdesheim bei Bingen am Rhein geboren. Sein Vater war ein Gastwirt und Weinkommissionär. Später lebte die Familie in Bingen, wo der junge George von Wagners Musikdramen, Shakespeare und der Landschaft der Bergstraße beeindruckt wurde. 1888-89 machte er mehrere Reisen nach London und Montreux, nach Turin und Paris, nach Madrid und Toledo. Da wurde er in den Kreis der Symbolisten eingeführt. Er traf Paul Verlaine, Albert Paul und Stéphane Mallarmé, die für seine Welt- und Dichtungsauffassung einflußreich waren. I n Berlin traf George Carl August Klein. Zwischen 1889-1891 besuchte er als eingeschriebener Student an der Berliner Universität Vorlesungen in Anglistik, Romanistik, Germanistik, Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie. 1890 wurde sein erstes Buch Hymnen herausgegeben, die seine Erlebnisse seit 1888 zusammenfaßte. 1891 nahm er Übersetzungsarbeiten auf, u.a. von Dante Alighieri, William Shaespeare und vielen französischen Dichtern (z.B. Baudelaire). Dann reiste er nach Kopenhagen, Paris, München, Verona, Venedig und Wien. In Wien traf George auf Hugo von Hofmannsthal, mit dem er eine intensive aber kurzfristige Freundschaft einging. 892 gab er Blätter für die Kunst heraus, die um eine "geistige Kunst" oder eine "Kunst für die Kunst" kämpften. Der "George-Kreis" entstand und breitete sich aus. Seine Ehe mit Ida Coblenz und der Bruch mit ihr trafen ihn schwer. Vieles in den

Still it consisted mostly of fellows of about his own age treated as equals, as distinguished from the later situation, when George was the august master venerated by much younger disciples. Growing up in a bilingual household was to prove advantageous to George in his later years of travel, but the choice, from a literary perspective, between writing in French and German was a serious and weighty concern for the young poet. Even in his youth, George showed a remarkable proficiency and aesthetic obsession for language. His earliest poems, written when he was fourteen, already exhibit a sensual and carefully constructed imagery, one which relies not only on visual portrayals but on aural landscapes as well. One critic has remarked that George consistently makes use of a "specially coded language," as indeed, is evidenced by his linguistic experiments. As a young boy of 8 or 9, George invented a secret language, intended for use in his imaginary kingdom (or "caliphate") of Amhara, into which he initiated a few select playmates.
