Payment in Blood by Elizabeth George Payment in Blood is one of Elizabeth George's popular series of mysteries featuring two central characters; the aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his associate, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers. In this installment, a murder is committed at a remote Scottish hotel, and, despite the fact that it's out of their jurisdiction, Lynley, Havers, and forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James are assigned to the case. Matters get progressively more complicated on a number of levels. First of all, Lynley discovers that a woman he loves is involved, then another murder is committed, and finally a 30-year old political scandal raises its ugly head. Payment in Blood has a number of the trappings of a classics mystery story - a crime committed by one of a small group of definite suspects, virtually all of whom have a fairly strong motive. However, despite its length, the book never induces the kind of boredom that works of that genre are wont to. This is due partly to the fact that George does a decent job of keeping the reader in suspense, and partly to the fact that there is so much more going on than just the solving of the crime. Lynley's emotional turmoil over the involvement of his lady-friend, which eventually impairs his professional judgement, Haver's basic dislike for aristocrats (which impairs

73. Elizabeth George

http://www.figuredestyle.vip.fr/george/

3 Nights, 4 Days
George VI (1936-52 AD)
George VI, born December 14, 1895, was the second son of George V and Mary of Teck. He was an unassuming, shy boy who greatly admired his brother Edward, Prince of Wales. From childhood to the age of thirty, George suffered with a bad stammer in his speech, which exacerbated his shyness; Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist, was instrumental in helping George overcome the speech defect. George married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, who bore him two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. He died from cancer on February 6, 1952. Due to the controversy surrounding the abdication of Edward VIII, popular opinion of the throne was at its lowest point since the latter half of Victoria's reign. The abdication, however, was soon overshadowed by continental developments, as Europe inched closer to yet another World War. After several years of pursuing "appeasement" policies with Germany, Great Britain (and France) declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. George, following in his father's footsteps, visited troops, munitions factories, supply docks and bomb-damaged areas to support the war effort. As the Nazi's bombed London, the royal family remained at Buckingham Palace; George went so far as to practice firing his revolver, vowing that he would defend Buckingham to the death. Fortunately, such defense was never necessary. The actions of the King and Queen during the war years greatly added to the prestige of the monarchy.

George Stevens
SWING TIME Beginning his career as a cinematographer, Stevens went on to become one of classic Hollywood's greatest directors and producers, being nominated five times as Best Director and winning the Oscar twice. Though WOMAN OF THE YEAR (1942) was their third and final picture together, George Stevens achieved his first big success directing another film with Katharine Hepburn , ALICE ADAMS (1935). Here, he put her together with Spencer Tracy to create a memorable duo who would go on to make eight more films together and become one of the most popular screen teams in history. WOMAN OF THE YEAR features Tracy as a sports reporter who succeeds in deflating the ego of Hepburn , a noted political commentator. The scene in which Hepburn attends her first baseball game is a classic and she earned a Best Actress nomination for the role. Stevens won his first Best Director Academy Award for this 1951 adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's novel An American Tragedy , A PLACE IN THE SUN. He also produced the film, starring Elizabeth Taylor Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters with Anne Revere and Raymond Burr, and it received six Oscars including his for Best Director. It did not, however, take home the Best Picture Award for which it was nominated.

The Sign of the Beaver
by Speare, Elizabeth George. ( Dell, 1983 ISBN 440 47900 2) Novel. 135 pages. Grades 4+. This book was reviewed by Carol Otis Hurst in Teaching K-8 Magazine
Review
Until the day his father returns to their cabin in the Maine wilderness with Matt's mother, twelve-year old Matt must try to survive on his own. He has expected that they will be back before winter, but they do not. His rifle is stolen and he has been attacked by a bear and then by bees. Rescued by an Indian, Saknis, and his grandson, Attean, Matt is asked to teach Attean the white people's ways. As the boys come to know each other, Attean learns to speak English while Matt becomes a skilled hunter. Attean asks Matt to join the Beaver tribe and move north. Should Matt abandon his hopes of ever seeing his family again and move on to a new life? This Newbery Medal winner personalized the clash of values between whites and the Penobscot people of Maine.

GEORGE VI (r. 1936-52)
George VI, a conscientious and dedicated man, worked hard to adapt to the role into which he was suddenly thrown. In 1923 he had married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon; and he carried out many official engagements at home and abroad, and established The Duke of York's Summer Camps for boys from all backgrounds. Reserved by nature, and of deep religious belief, he did not expect to become King.
The King paid a State Visit to France in 1938, and to Canada and the United States in 1939 (he was the first British monarch to enter the United States). His dedication to duty, particularly during the Second World War, when he remained for most of the time at Buckingham Palace (the Palace was bombed nine times during the war), and when he and his wife visited severely bombed areas in the East End of London and elsewhere in the country, gained him great popularity. The King developed a close working relationship with his wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, as most of Europe fell to Nazi Germany. Recognising the total nature of modern warfare, in 1940 the King instituted the George Cross and George Medal, to be awarded for acts of bravery by citizens. In 1942, the George Cross was awarded to the island and people of Malta in recognition of the heroism with which they had resisted the enemy siege.
