Alistair Gentry Werewolves 23 March - 12 May 2002 visit Alistair Gentry's website for more on Werewolves ArtSway is pleased to present an exhibition of exciting new work by Alistair Gentry. Werewolves is a digital sound and environmental installation, and an experiment in the direct stimulation of visitor responses to art works.
The Feraliminal Lycanthropiser (recreated digitally here) is a device reputed to promote feelings of openness, urgency and pure existence in the present, and a temporary redirection or suppression of conscious thoughts. The installation incorporates various spoken texts, which operate on the threshold of decipherability. These all pertain in some way to physical or psychological transformations and include old stories and rhymes, contemporary motivational mantras and inarticulate human vocalisations. Many people still seek transformation and freedom from what they see as mundane lives.
All that has changed is that they look to technology and to 'experts' instead of to the superstitions and the witches of previous centuries.

ALISTAIR GENTRY : GLOBALIZATION OR GLOBALISATION?
ANDREW GALLIX ASKS ALISTAIR GENTRY IF GLOBALIZ(S)ATION IS HAVING AN IMPACT ON LITERATURE
A SHORT ANSWER

To give a short answer to a question that could be (and I'm sure has been) unpacked and picked apart at book length:
Yes. A SLIGHTLY LONGER ANSWER
To give a slightly longer answer:
Yes, and quite right too. Literature is acting like any healthy cultural artefact does. It's absorbing new material, eating itself and vomiting up new work, reaching out for new brains to live in and new ways to speak. The only static art forms are dead ones, just like the only cultures not in flux are long dead.
PRISSY RED PEN ANNOTATIONS
One of the worrying things about globalisation is actually more about Americanisation, and the proliferation via software of a pusilanimous, non-litigious, euphemistic form of American English where confrontation and difference become (1984-style) unspeakable and therefore unthinkable (e.g. the heinous Microsoft Word with its prissy red pen annotations). But even this kind of unpleasantness helps us in a way, because it feeds the growing worldwide realisation that the international military-industrial-entertainment complex is bad for all but a tiny minority of us, and lethal for many of us. We've got what we need from them. Thanks for the internet. Thanks for the computer I'm writing this on. Thanks for the CDs. We know how to make them now. Oh and close the door on your way out, capitalists.

Each death is as different as people are different. Each is a story to be told.
Inspired by the black box flight recorders of crashed planes, 100 black boxes is a hypertext fiction constructed from 100 words each by 100 characters about the moment of their deaths. The shading of each box indicates how many times it has been visited. 100 black boxes was written for the WWW by Alistair Gentry . Over the two-year active period of the site, every box became black with use (i.e. was read at least 100 times). Some boxes cycled from white to black numerous times. See a graphic of site usage for the active period of the site. The active period of the site is now over. It will remain online indefinitely but analysis of page usage will no longer function. We hope you will continue to look at the stories if you haven't read them all, and keep on spreading the word. FRANCE
ATOMISED
Y ou strictly-English-speakers can at last read Michel Houellebecq's Atomised Les Particules Elementaires ) and enjoy the darker than dark 'lucidity' of the French writer's moral autopsy of our society. The plot follows the lives of Michel and Bruno, two half-brothers of catastrophic family background. Michel is a kind of emotionless, cyborg-like genius genetician, while Bruno is a neurotic, sexually obsessed fortyish teacher, whose desperate odyssey for sexual satisfaction leads us down to the most sordid recesses of human animality (or almost), and, paradoxically, to moments of authentic tenderness. If you read this book, make sure that you will under no circumstance let yourself be persuaded away from your legitimate quest for pleasure. Houellebecq's stone-cold analysis of our 'passions' and urges is at times hard to swallow, but you'd be sorry to miss a genuine literary phenomenon.

HOME HYPNOMART
A short film by Joe Magee and Alistair Gentry Synopsis HYPNOMART uses covert footage of shoppers in a suburban mall to study human behaviour, and as source material for the artists' own manipulations of unsuspecting consumers. In these comprehensively surveilled and clinical environments, tiny gestures are magnified and transmit virally through the crowd. In the Hypnomart watching and voyeurism are inextricable. Whether the subjects of surveillance are shopping in a trance or enacting compulsive rituals for the cameras, sometimes they align themselves in patterns like microbes or herds, or create dances that last mere seconds. Background Information HYPNOMART was devised by artists Joe Magee and Alistair Gentry, who met at one of PVA's LabCulture brainstorming sessions in Bridport, Dorset. It was commissioned in 2000 by the Arts Council of England and Channel 4 for their 'Animate' scheme. 'Characters' were selected from hours of digital video footage and removed from their original environments using Apple Macintosh computers. Loops of movements and behaviours were generated. The mall was then re-populated and reorganised to create a bizarre, yet logical new environment. Sampled sounds from the mall were similarly selected, manipulated and reorganised. The artists were committed to making their first film using only digital technology. With no proposed plot and little precedent for this type of work, the commissioning bodies and the artists themselves were in a constant state of development and discovery. HYPNOMART was entirely conceived, shot, edited, produced and processed by Magee and Gentry. The resulting work reflects this intensive, convoluted process. It also reflects both artists' interest in and explorations of cultural transmission: the 'viral' transmission of human behaviour. In this instance the artists chose to examine these forces in commercial environments.
