John Travolta And Scientology: Still Gay After All These Years - Part 3
TRAVOLTA DRAGGED INTO BIZARRE GAY LAWSUIT
by Martin Gould John Travolta has been dragged into court battle between a gay artist and the powerful Church of Scientology. Michael Pattison says he turned to the sect to "cure" his homosexuality after it used 44-year old "Face Off" star Travolta to illustrate how the church could turn gay people straight. Now Pattison is suing the church and 22 of its members for fraud, claiming he spent 25 years and a half a million dollars trying to deal with his own homosexuality - but is still gay. His lawyer, Graham Berry, tells STAR: "Michael was in a Scientology center in Clearwater, Florida with Travolta and they used him as an example of someone who could be cured of what they referred to as is "ruin". However, after 25 years and $500,000, Michael is still gay". In a massive 166-page complaint filed in federal court in Los Angeles, Pattison, 49, is seeking millions of dollars in damages from the church, whose members include Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Kirstie Alley and Priscilla Presley. Pattison, a Beverly Hills artist, claims in court papers that he was seduced into joining the church in the early 1970's - around the same time Travolta became a member - because it promised a cure. Pattison became more convinced of the church's supposed powers when Travolta married his pregnant bride Kelly Preston in 1991. The marriage came after a male porn star (Paul Barresi) had given graphic details of an alleged two-year gay affair with Travolta. At the time, Travolta was romancing co-stars Olivia Newton-John from "Grease", Marilu Henner from the Broadway production of the same musical and Debra Winger from "Urban Cowboy", the porn actor said, adding that the affair finished before Travolta started dating Preston. "That contributed to my continuing belief in the misrepresentations that Scientology processing and courses would `handle' my own homosexuality", says Pattison in his lawsuit.

John Loughery: A Pulitzer Prize Finalist's History of the 20th Century
The Other Side of Silence
Interview by Jack Nichols
O nly under the most favorable circumstances is a masterful writer drawn to explore mountains of research material surrounding an entire century. That a talent such as Pulitzer Prize finalist John Loughery's has been so employed on behalf of 20th Century gay male history is therefore cause for rejoicing. Professor Martin Duberman calls Loughery's The Other Side of Silence "a splendid achievement, a beautifully argued and written, comprehensive, subtle and evenhanded book." It is, says Duberman, "all at once deeply informed and entirely accessible—a rare combination in the world of historical writing." Historian James T. Sears calls The Other Side of Silence "a must read," that's "broad in scope, rich in description, provocative in insight. Sears celebrates Loughery's brilliant prose as "illuminating in a very human manner." Jack Nichols: What thoughts currently stand out in some principal ways in your own mind now that you've completed this monumental work? John Loughery: I have two quite different thoughts at this point. On the one hand, my interest in questions of "gay identity" my wish to explore them further in my own life, my respect for those gay men doing that – has increased. Whether it's Tim Miller and Douglas Sadownick or the Radical Faeries or the Body Electric people, I live in wonder at all that's taking place. But I also feel more uneasiness now than when I started the project, after widening my circle of acquaintance an uneasiness about where we as gay men are headed. The carrot-and-stick approach that society takes with us now act as we want you to and we might give you a nibble of the carrot is seductive and it doesn't lend itself to probing into the meaning of our experience as homosexuals in a culture that actively hates homosexuals.

Christianity and Homosexuality These two topics have recently seemed to be mutually-exclusive. Members of the religious right say that one cannot be a good Christian and be homosexual while some members of the gay community say one cannot be an honest homosexual and Christian. Both of these statements are false and show a good deal of ignorance and fear on both sides of the issue, please read on. Homosexuality is not unique in its status as an issue some people use to justify their hatred and/or repression of others. Throughout the history of this country, the world, and the church there have been other issues that were divisive in nature: anti-Sematism, slavery, and female clergy to name a few. John 7:1 states " After this Jesus went about in Galilee, he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him

Sorry.....we have closed our site on CompuServe due to the tremendous hassle of maintatining the site. We have found CompuServe's tech support (of their Ourworld area) and their customer service to be so terrible that we can no longer maintain a site on their servers. Access to our sites on BellSouth and Mindspring has never been a problem, and we continue to use those sites with ease. CompuServe's traditional quirkiness, which we once found amusing, has turned out to be so irritating as to make them useless. Standard FTP software that works elsewhere is of no value at CompuServe. The software that CompuServe provides is user-UNfriendly, if you can make it work at all. This would be a manageable situation if CompuServe's tech support and customer service staff were better trained and more knowledgeable. Unlike the tech support people at Earthlink, the CompuServe staff simply tell you they don't support that area, and tell you you'll have to talk to someone else, but they don't have a clue who that might be. Should you be considering an ISP to host YOUR site, I highly recommend you consider someone OTHER than CompuServe.
