    25. Beggar's Opera And Its Sanskrit Puns

Beggar's Opera and its Sanskrit Wordplay
    By richston100@yahoo.com, Richard Stoney
In 1728, there appeared the first public production of John Gay's Beggar's Opera , which dealt with activities of some British crooks. As known by anyone familiar with the play, the names are highly contrived (Filch, Crook-Finger'd Jack). This essay will show that the names of most of the characters are Sanskritic hybrids, mixed with English. What many people do not know is that European missionaries were very knowledgeable in Sanskrit circa 1600.
In a some cases, it will be difficult to determine whether the plays on words are all-Sanskrit, all-English or mixtures of both (especially in the case of Matt of the Mint). Since the two languages are etymologically related, this is inevitable.
It is believed that British criminal cant and terminologies derived from the Gypsies, who, it is believed, left India circa 1400.
Many of the Sanskrit words would be best understood if pronounced in the Italian fashion. After all, Beggar's Opera has been likened to an Italian opera, with Italian divas.

    Hello!
Your arrival at this page says a lot about you,
just as the site itself says a lot about me.
Why you are here I will leave to you to decide.
Why I have created this site is also left for you to decide.
Often the search is more important than the 'find'.

We do not presume to judge you for exploring this site.
    You may be just curious,
you may have been surfing the net to see what is out there,
or you may be looking for an axe to grind
    or just be bored.
Whatever the reason, we hope you will find something of interest here that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Even if it is a new way of looking at something old. This is an ADULT site in that some of the images may be considered .... well, as unsuitable for young minds. Of course, if you are old enough to be surfing the net, then what you have already seen in your own home is probably more "adult" than what you will see here.

Gay, John Gay, John, , English playwright and poet, b. Barnstaple, Devon. Educated at the local grammar school, he was apprenticed to a silk mercer for a brief time before commencing his literary career in London. The first of his writings to have any real merit were the mock pastoral, The Shepherd's Week (1714), and Trivia (1716), an amusing description of London life. He is remembered chiefly today for his ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera (1728), a lighthearted story of highwaymen and thieves, which satirizes both the corruption of contemporary genteel society and the then current fashion for Italian opera. Its sequel, Polly, written the following year, was suppressed by Sir Robert Walpole since it (like The Beggar's Opera ) ridiculed his government. Gay was also the author of two books of verse called Fables (1727, 1738), which were very popular in his generation. See his poetical works edited by G. C. Faber (1926, repr. 1969); study by P. A. FFS A few years ago a powersurge killed my computer. It went through the power supply and fryed my processor. Fortunately we had one month left on a extended 2 year gurantee and most of the computer was replaced including a new processor and case. About the only original parts was the drives!
Earlier this year, I left my PC on overnight and in the morning it had both lights "on" on the front, but it was dead. I tried to restart it and unplug and plug it in again but it would not start! We took it to get repaired and they thought a capaciter had blown in the Power Supply Unit (PSU) and it was replaced and working again!
Yesterday when I woke up the same thing had happened again! The lights were on but no one was home! grrr! I don't get how its lost power again and its connected through a brand new surge protector!
The psu is still under guantee, but the repair place is about 50 minutes away and don't want to lose the computer for a week or let them see my porn!
I have brought a new Power Supply Unit by the net and waiting for it to arrive and hopefully l will be able to fit it myself!

I thought it once, and now I know it.
(John Gay's self-written epitaph) John Gay was born in Devon in 1685. He died in 1732 and was buried in Westminster. He was briefly an apprentice to a silk merchant in London. As an apprentice he became familiar with London. Although he disliked it, his years as an apprentice provided him with much of the material for his success. When his apprenticeship was complete, he returned to Devon. To pursue success as a writer he once again went to London in 1707 or 1708. Gay worked for a time as a secretary for Arthur Hill, a friend from Barnstable Grammar School. Hill was very interested in the theatre and became manager of a company owned by William Collier, then a Tory member of Parliament. Although the job lasted only two years, Gay - as Hill's secretary - gained invaluable experience. Writers of the time were dependent upon wealthy patrons to support them and their works. Gay inherited a small sum from his brother and in 1712 obtained a position with the Duchess of Monmouth. Through this position he became acquainted with those who would later become his patrons, most importantly, the Duke and Duchess of Queensberry. By this time he had also come to the attention of Alexander Pope and the Scriblerus circle. Although he produced two plays
