ELIZABETH GASKELL MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION
Information about the collection 'THIS BUSTLING LIFE': THE EVERY-DAY STORY OF ELIZABETH GASKELL, A LADY NOVELIST The exhibition took place on 26 June-10 August 2000 A prolific and celebrated author, Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-65) was also a wife, mother, Christian and social commentator, who was acquainted with some of the leading figures of her day. Hers was a truly 'bustling life'. She became a literary celebrity on the publication of her first novel, Mary Barton (1848), a portrait of industrial oppression amongst cotton workers in her adopted city of Manchester. Similarly controversial was her novel cn the theme of unmarried motherhood, Ruth (1853), which was banned in many Victorian households. Her wide-ranging work also encompasses the gentle comedy of Cranford, her masterpiece Wives and Daughters (recently the subject of a BBC dramatization), an important biography of her friend Charlotte Bronte, and innumerable short stories. This exhibition drew on the Library's significant collection of Gaskelliana to present the 'every-day' story of Elizabeth Gaskell's life and work through books, manuscripts and artefacts. It included some of the new Gaskell letters which came to light in Scotland last year and were deposited at the Library by the Gaskell Society.

Elizabeth Gaskell
Profile
Novelist. Born in London, the daughter of William Stevenson, a civil servant, Elizabeth was brought up in Knutsford, Cheshire by an aunt. Her association with the West Midlands is through the five years she spent at school in Warwickshire. In 1822 Elizabeth was sent to a boarding school three miles from Warwick at Barford. It was run by three sisters who were related to Josiah Wedgwood, the prosperous Midlands pottery manufacturer. It was a large and graceful house with spacious grounds and an open aspect and the town and its church are alluded to in Elizabeth's later writing. In 1824 the school moved to Avonbank, Stratford-upon-Avon , a Tudor building with literary associations, having been owned by a cousin of William Shakespeare. The students attended the adjacent Holy Trinity Church and Elizabeth was able to use her knowledge of the Clopton family, derived in part from their chapel in the church, when writing about nearby Clopton House. This became her first published work when it was included in Visits to remarkable places (1840) by William Howitt.

I'll not listen to reason... reason always means what someone else has got to say. Elizabeth Gaskell Madam your wife and I didn't hit it off the only time I ever saw her. I won't say she was silly, but I think one of us was silly, and it wasn't me. Elizabeth Gaskell My heart burnt within me with indignation and grief; we could think of nothing else. All night long we had only snatches of sleep, waking up perpetually to the sense of a great shock and grief. Every one is feeling the same. I never knew so universal a feeling. Elizabeth Gaskell People may flatter themselves just as much by thinking that their faults are always present to other people's minds, as if they believe that the world is always contemplating their individual charms and virtues.

The Hunt for the Lady in the Picture
Is this a portrait of Mrs Gaskell? and was it commissioned by the rich philanthropist, Miss Angela Burdett Coutts, either for her own collection or perhaps for Dickens' office in Household Words - a journal which Miss Coutts founded? An important clue to the provenance of this painting appears in Angus Wilson's book The Word of Charles Dickens . "Dickens was tireless in raising funds to help actresses who had fallen on hard times or educating the children of actors who had died suddenly in a precarious profession." The painting was owned by a daughter of a famous actress whom Dickens, Coutts and, it now appears, Mrs Gaskell all assisted. Help needed, please
The following is my account of the trail to confirm the painting's provenance. It was originally printed in The Times Literary Supplement , 21st November, 2003
    Portrait of a lady
An unattributed painting of Mrs Gaskell?
I checked to see if the painting had been used as a frontispiece for one of Mrs Gaskell's books. It had not. I also searched Mrs Gaskell's letters and the biographies of her for a mention of the portrait. There was a promising lead Mrs Gaskell and Her Friends (1930) by Elizabeth Haldane, which had a passing reference to a "movement to have Mrs Gaskell's portrait painted" - "but the scheme did not mature". The date given was "sometime after Jan. 1850". Unfortunately, Haldane did not provide a footnote and an appeal for information printed in the Gaskell Society Newsletter drew a blank.
