    ELIZABETH GASKELL:
Her incisive novels painted a starkly revealing portrait of working-class life in Manchester LIKE many other authors of her generation, Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell was fascinated by the plight of workers in 19th-century Manchester. But unlike some, she could write from first-hand experience of the subject. Born Elizabeth Stevenson in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, in 1810, she lost her mother the same year and was brought up by an aunt in Knutsford, a small town in leafy Cheshire. She looked destined for a life of boring gentility, but that was never in her make-up. Her marriage in 1832 to William Gaskell proved a turning point. William was a junior minister at Manchester's famous Cross Street Unitarian Chapel and her move to the smoky industrial city opened her eyes. She embarked on a detailed study of the lives of working men and women and the result was a novel, Mary Barton , published anonymously in 1848.

    Literature
    The Nineteenth Century English Author
    Elizabeth Gaskell
This is part of the Aurora project Elizabeth Gaskell was a famous nineteenth century novelist, renowned for writing about places and situations which she encountered during her life. Her books often dealt with social concerns, and from her writings we have been able to learn a great deal about life in England in those days. Born to an upper middle class family , and later marrying a clergyman, she saw many different sides of life, and the contrast between the rich and the poor. After the death of her mother when she was still a baby, she was sent from her birthplace, London, to Knutsford in Cheshire to live with an Aunt. From an early age she loved books, and at thirteen was sent to Avonbank Boarding School, at Stratford upon Avon, where she spent enjoyable schooldays. When her father died she was left with relatively little money, and to support herself she became a governess. She lived in several different parts of the country: London, Newcastle, Edinburgh and finally Manchester. Here she met a young junior minister William Gaskell, who was to become her husband. As a minister’s wife, Elizabeth became very involved in helping the poor, and saw for the first time, the dreadful hovels and cellars in which many workers lived amongst soot and grime. When she was twenty eight, Elizabeth wrote an article about an old country house, which was printed in a magazine. After losing her baby son to scarlet fever at ten months old, her husband suggested that she should write a book. It took her three years to write, because she always put her other duties to family and friends and those in need, before anything else.

The Society is based in Knutsford, with its many Gaskell associations, especially as Cranford, and as Hollingford in Wives and Daughters. Here she spent a happy childhood at Heathwaite no 17, now Gaskell Avenue, was married in the Parish Church and is buried in the graveyard of the three hundred year old Unitarian Brook Street Chapel surrounded by her ancestors' graves. Mrs Gaskell's house at 84 Plymouth Grove, Manchester, belongs to the University of Manchester. The Gaskell Memorial Tower, situated at the Bellel Epoque Restaurant, stands as a memorial to her in Knutsford town centre. The Society offers a Journal, News letters, visits, meetings and conferences, lectures and tours.

Elizabeth Gaskell was an acclaimed and prominent Victorian novelist, and a contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte , among others. Her writings reflect both her happy upbringing in the Cheshire countryside and her concern for the privations of the working classes of Manchester, where she spent most of her adult life. Among her most famous works are the novels Mary Barton and North and South, and her controversial biography The Life of Charlotte Brontë.

For a right understanding of the life of my dear friend, Charlotte Bronte, it appears to me more necessary in her case than in most others, that the reader should be made acquainted with the peculiar forms of population and society amidst which her earliest years were passed, The Life of Charlotte Bronte Volume 2
While the minds of the three sisters were in this state of suspense, their long-expected friend came to pay her promised visit. She was with them at the beginning of the glowing August of that year.
