David Gascoyne
David Gascoyne October 10 November 25 ) was a British poet associated with the Surrealist movement.
Early Life and Surrealism
Gascoyne was born in Harrow and grew up in England and Scotland and attended the Choir School at Salisbury and Regent Street Polytechnic in London . He spent part of the early 1930s in Paris His first book, Roman Balcony and Other Poems was published in , when he was sixteen. A novel, Opening Day , was published the following year. However, it was Man's Life is This Meat ), which collected his early surrealist work and translations of French surrealists, and Hoelderlin's Madness ) that established his reputation. Thess publications, together with his Short Survey of Surrealism and his work on the London International Surrealist Exhibition, made him one of a small group of English surrealists that included Hugh Sykes Davis and Roger Roughton.
Politics
Gascoyne had become friendly with Charles Madge and through him became involved in the Mass Observation movement. He joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in and broadcast some radio talks for the Barcelona -based propaganda ministry. However, he soon became disillusioned and left the party.

Collected Journals 1936-42 by David Gascoyne 12.IV.37 The arrival this morning of a postcard from George Barker has rather upset my plan to finish April by Wednesday. I am going to meet him tomorrow morning at 11.30 on the British Museum steps. I have not done nearly enough work today! I always seem to fall asleep in the afternoon; and if I do, I dream. Yesterday it was about what Audrey Beecham told me about Spender and Tony H., but I can’t remember it distinctly; today’s I can’t remember at all. (Extraordinary dream lately about a Flying Cow, which landed in a quiet twilit field on the edge of a wood, at each of the four corners of which stood a double sheep ! i.e. two sheep with a single head, and with long ears like a judge’s wig.) How very remote the memory of going to Barcelona last October has become! It seems like a dream, or something I once read. Turning out a drawer yesterday and coming across some photos that Roland took there reminded me of it. I should like to write down everything I can remember about it before I forget too much. In The Barrio Chino in Barcelona there was a cabaret which we went to several times. They did the Quadro Flamenco there. It was a large room with a square platform in the middle, and balconies round the walls with boxes beneath them. The cheaper seats consisted of chairs grouped round the platform. In the boxes lurked stray whores, though there was a notice up to say that they did not belong to the building. The audience, as far as I remember, was made up chiefly of militiamen and sailors. On evening Mirravitles, the Propaganda Minister, came in (an intellectual friend of Dali, with whom he was once implicated in a plot to assassinate Alfonso) with a lot of people from the Propaganda office where I worked, and sat in the balcony. Our party, in which were Roland and Valentine, Christian Zervos and Yvonne, Fernandez and Tzara, were sitting underneath.

David Gascoyne was born in 1916 in Harrow, Middlesex, and educated at Salisbury Cathedral School and the Regent Street Polytechnic, London. His first collection of poetry, Roman Balcony and Other Poems was published when he was sixteen, and in 1933 Cobden-Sanderson brought out his novel, Opening Day . Both books are remarkable achievements for an adolescent, and they were followed by the equally striking poetry collections, Man's Life Is This Meat (1936) and Hoelderlin's Madness (1938), which established his reputation as one of the most original voices of the 1930s. Gascoyne was among the earliest champions of Surrealism: in 1935 his A Short Survey of Surrealism was published, and in the next year he was one of the organisers of the London International Surrealist Exhibition. From this period, and during his time living in France in 1937-39, date his friendships with Dali, Max Ernst, Andre Breton, Paul Eluard and Pierre Jean Jouve. As well as becoming internationally celebrated as a poet-especially after publication of his

    fp: RCM concert hall, 18/5/01,
Alison Wells, Edwin Roxburgh, RCM Sinfonietta.
The first of the pieces, Signs, exaggerates the sense of darkness within the poetry.
The Cage is much lighter, with a very transparent texture surrounding the mezzo line.
Yves Tanguy, the last of the settings, is more aggressive and deploys the full force of the orchestra.
My deepest thanks go to David for letting me set his poetry. SIGNS There fell down on the shadowed sand Like dead birds from an evil nest Across a livid space of sky: A writhing hand, The pale globe of a breast And a dismembered thigh. Across the curtains of the air There presently began to rise A dream-transfigured face With lips exhaling prayer And lambent eyes.
