by George Gascoigne
Author Category: Olde English. Show lines.
SING lullaby, as women do,
Wherewith they bring their babes to rest;
And lullaby can I sing too,
As womanly as can the best.
With lullaby they still the child;
And if I be not much beguiled,
Full many a wanton babe have I,
Which must be still'd with lullaby. First lullaby my youthful years, It is now time to go to bed: For crooked age and hoary hairs Have won the haven within my head. With lullaby, then, youth be still; With lullaby content thy will; Since courage quails and comes behind, Go sleep, and so beguile thy mind! Next lullaby my gazing eyes, Which wonted were to glance apace; For every glass may now suffice To show the furrows in thy face. With lullaby then wink awhile; With lullaby your looks beguile; Let no fair face, nor beauty bright, Entice you eft with vain delight. And lullaby my wanton will; Let reason's rule now reign thy thought; Since all too late I find by skill How dear I have thy fancies bought; With lullaby now take thine ease

    That age is dead and vanished long ago
    Which thought that steel both trusty was and true
    And needed not a foil of contraries
    But showed all things even as they were indeed.
    Instead whereof our curious years can find
    The crystal glass which glimseth brave and bright And shows the thing much better than it is, Beguiled with foils of sundry subtle sights So that they seemed and cover not to be. This is the cause, believe me now my Lord, That realms do rue from high prosperity, That kings decline from princely government, That Lords do lack their ancestors’ good will, That knights consume their patrimonies still, That gentlemen do make the merchant rise, That ploughmen beg and craftsmen cannot thrive, That clergy quails and hath small reverence, That laymen live by moving mischief still, That courtiers thrive at latter Lammas day, That officers can scarce enrich their heirs

Gascoigne's Supposes, a translation of Ariosto's I suppositi, was the first English prose comedy, while his Jocasta, translated from an Italian version of Euripides' Phoenician Women, was the first Greek tragedy in English to be staged and one of the earliest English tragedies in blank verse. Both plays were performed at Gray's Inn in 1566. He also wrote The Steel Glass (1576), a nondramatic work in blank verse, noted as the first English satire.

      Seven Sonnets in Sequence
        - on a theme suggested to Gascoigne by Sir Alexander Nevil
        Sonnet I
        I N haste, post haste, when first my wandering mind
        Beheld the glistring Court with gazing eye,
        Such deep delights I seemed therein to find,
        As might beguile a graver guest than I.
        The stately pomp of Princes and their peers
        Did seem to swim in floods of beaten gold;
        The wanton world of young delightful year
        Was not unlike a heaven for to behold,
        Wherein did swarm (for every saint) a Dame
        So fair of hue, so fresh of their attire,
        As might excel Dame Cynthia for Fame,
        Or conquer Cupid with his own desire.
        These and such like baits that blazed still
        Before mine eye, to feed my greedy will.
        Sonnet II
        Before mine eye, to feed my greedy will,
        'Gan muster eke mine old acquainted mates,
        Who helped the dish (of vain delight) to fill
        My empty mouth with dainty delicates;
        And foolish boldness took the whip in hand
        To lash my life into this trustless trace,
        Till all in haste I leapt a loof from land
        And hoist up sail to catch a Courtly grace.

    George Gascoigne, George W. Pigman III - Editor
    A Hundreth Sundrie Flowres
    (Oxford University Press 2000) George Gascoigne has been called the most versatile author of the sixteenth century. His A Hundreth Sundrie Flowres , published anonymously in 1573, contains the first adaptation of a Greek tragedy in English, the finest Elizabethan novella, and the play from which Shakespeare took the subplot for The Taming of the Shrew. This version, edited by George W. Pigman III, is the only modern edition to respect the integrity of the first edition. The critical apparatus allows the reader to reconstruct the changes Gascoigne later made in The Posies (1575), and all the works which appear there for the first time are included. The commentary studies Gascoigne's use of his sources and situates his works in their literary and social milieux.
    George W. Pigman III, Professor of Literature
