    on Investment Reform Legislation
HARRISBURG The Task Force on School and Municipal Investments held its first public hearing Tuesday, June 22, 1999, on the legislation it has proposed to prevent a repeat of the John Gardner Black municipal investment scandal. The Task Force unveiled its proposed Local Government Investment Reform Act earlier this month and plans to schedule additional hearings around the state this summer. The second hearing is being planned for August 24, 1999 in Pittsburgh. The task force was formed in the wake of the Black scandal, in which more than 50 municipalities and school districts lost more than $70 million. State Treasurer Barbara Hafer chairs the bipartisan task force. Other members are the majority and minority members of the Senate and House Finance Committees: Sen. Melissa Hart, Sen. John Wozniak, Rep. Karl Boyes and Rep. Fred Trello. The Task Force heard testimony from: Robert P. Casey, Jr.

AIR established its Palo Alto office in 1963. It now consists of three separate buildings, joined by covered walkways, on 8 acres of a rural, wooded hillside overlooking Stanford University. Our buildings cover 27,500 square feet and house offices and workspace for 100 research, technical, and administrative personnel. Over half of our staff members hold advanced degrees in psychology, sociology, economics, or statistics. Our work The research staff at this site reflects several areas of expertise. Employment Equity Our employment equity staff work with attorneys and human resource managers to design and conduct analyses that assess equity in personnel practices. Our staff includes industrial psychologists, validation experts, statisticians, psychometricians, sociologists, computer programmers, and database developers who work on a variety of individual and class-action employment discrimination lawsuits for both plaintiffs and defendants. More recently, we are working with organizations to obtain self-critical analyses and to identify "best practices" information. Understanding Communities Since 1991, researchers have worked with Dr. John Gardner of Stanford University to identify the critical elements that create a sense of community, and to develop tools to gauge the level of community in various settings. Our work suggests that community may provide the necessary foundation for creating more effective and fulfilling work, learning, and living environments. Our researchers develop tools for assessing and building a sense of community, and provide groups with the capabilities to use these tools in their own environments.

    Grendel
    Author Info: John Gardner
I don't really know enough about John Gardner to be too confident in my analysis what he intended by this book, and the online reviews and essays are wildly contradictory. But personally I read it as a tale of Western Christian triumphalism over existentialism. Beowulf and the other humans, most importantly the Shaper, represent the idea that there is a purpose to life and order in the universe. Grendel, influenced by the dragon, believes that existence is its own end, that life is meaningless. But even Grendel is plagued by the realization that his world view is empty and unfulfilling, so when he hears the Shaper's song: He told of an ancient feud between two brothers which split the world between darkness and light.
And I, Grendel, was the dark side, he said in effect. The terrible race God cursed. I believed him.
Such was the power of the Shaper's harp! The Shaper's implicit messagethat human existence serves a purpose and that man, through the cultivation of art, science and religion, is realizing a destinyis more than Grendel can take:

This John Gardner is not to be confused with the "other John Gardner," who is the "other author" of the James Bond series. The American writer, John Gardner, was a poet, novelist, playwright, and teacher and he is perhaps best known for writing about writing. Gardner's nonfiction includes The Art of Fiction: Notes on Craft for Young Writers On Becoming a Novelist , and On Moral Fiction . Writers Raymond Carver and Charles Johnson studied in Gardner's classroom. John Gardner's fiction includes The Art of Living Grendel Nickel Mountain The Resurrection , and The Sunlight Dialogues . He won the 1976 National Book Critics Circle Award for his novel, October Light . In this 1981 interview with Don Swaim and Gil Gross, Gardner discusses his own writing and a few of the strengths and weaknesses of writers Jane Austen, Saul Bellow, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolsoy, John Updike and others. Gardner explains why he prefers the Lone Star Review to the New York Times for book reviews, why some writers use alcohol to "find things" and why writers need to take a stand.

    MATHEMATICAL GAMES
The fantastic combinations of John Conway's new solitaire game "life"
by Martin Gardner Scientific American 223 (October 1970): 120-123. Most of the work of John Horton Conway , a mathematician at Gonville and Caius College of the University of Cambridge , has been in pure mathematics. For instance, in 1967 he discovered a new groupsome call it "Conway's constellation"that includes all but two of the then known sporadic groups. (They are called "sporadic" because they fail to fit any classification scheme.) Is is a breakthrough that has had exciting repercussions in both group theory and number theory. It ties in closely with an earlier discovery by John Conway of an extremely dense packing of unit spheres in a space of 24 dimensions where each sphere touches 196,560 others. As Conway has remarked, "There is a lot of room up there." In addition to such serious work Conway also enjoys recreational mathematics. Although he is highly productive in this field, he seldom publishes his discoveries. One exception was his paper on "Mrs. Perkin's Quilt," a dissection problem discussed in "Mathematical Games" for September, 1966. My topic for July, 1967, was sprouts, a topological pencil-and-paper game invented by Conway and M. S. Paterson. Conway has been mentioned here several other times. This month we consider Conway's latest brainchild, a fantastic solitaire pastime he calls "life". Because of its analogies with the rise, fall and alternations of a society of living organisms, it belongs to a growing class of what are called "simulation games"games that resemble real-life processes. To play life you must have a fairly large checkerboard and a plentiful supply of flat counters of two colors. (Small checkers or poker chips do nicely.) An Oriental "go" board can be used if you can find flat counters that are small enough to fit within its cells. (Go stones are unusable because they are not flat.) It is possible to work with pencil and graph paper but it is much easier, particularly for beginners, to use counters and a board.
