Rev Fr James Galvin, who passed away, was President of the East Kerry Board since 1969. Fr Galvin was well known throughout the county and had a deep interest in GAA affairs right up to the time of his death.
Having begun his education at Dingle CBS, Fr James went on to St Brendans College, Killarney where he had the distinction of captaining the senior team.
From Glenflesk, he travelled to Moyvane, Dromtariffe, Rathmore and finally Fossa where he spent 26 years as Parish Priest.
Former chairman of the Fossa GAA Club and the East Kerry Board, Pat Sweeney, paid Fr Galvin the following tribute.
He was, of course, also a former chairman of the East Kerry Board, (1951-52) and always took an active interest in the affairs of the board, indeed a cup named in his honour is presented to the winners of the Intermediate championship each year.
Current chairman of the EK Board, Ger Calvin, himself a former parishioner of Fr Galvin, said that he was a man who was very much liked and respected by the community.

Real Wonder
by James Galvin
This is Michael Carey for Voices from the Prairie
Real Wonder
In the stunned little interval
Between winter and spring.
Like the held gasp of surprise
Preceding real wonder,
Green stirs low down and shows
Through dead blond shocks of grass,
And gray aspen flowers dangle
Above old snowbanks:
I go around like a feral saint. The timber hordes
I used to walk over the hill
To visit my neighbor About now. Just because he was still alive After another winter. At the groggy meadow, Not much to say in the end. This year my neighbor is dead So I walk the hill anyway. The timber hordes Its meager crust of snow. This is just the stunned little interval After another winter The held gasp of surprise Preceding real wonder. "Real Wonder", by James Galvin from Lethal Frequencies published by Copper Canyon Press and reprinted in Voices on the Landscape: Contemporary Iowa Poets published by Loess Hills Books of Farragut. For Voices from the Prairie and Humanities Iowa, this is Michael Carey hoping you continue to hear the music blooming all round you.

What I've Believed In
by James Galvin This is Michael Carey for Voices from the Prairie a weekly sampling from the rich soil of Iowa’s literary tradition. Today’s poet is James Galvin originally from a ranch in Wyoming where he returns when he isn’t teaching at the Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. At first glance, this finely-crafted prose piece seems to be about an old junked car left to rot in the woods, a car that for years used to power a saw at the local lumberyard. If you listen closely, however, with your heart and your mind you will feel how this poem is really about faith and hope and the mysterious reason for being on this earth that may one day just clearly present itself to each and every one of us. It’s called "What I’ve Believed In." "What I’ve Believed In" by James Galvin from his book, Imaginary Timber published by Doubleday. It is also included in Resurrection Update: Collected Poems 1975-1997 published by Copper Canyon Press. For Voices from the Prairie and Humanities Iowa, this is Michael Carey hoping you continue to hear the music blooming all around you.

51. James Galvin, X
james galvin, X (Copper Canyon, 2003). A long time has past since John Keats slouched beneath a nightingale s nest in a plum tree
http://www.rambles.net/galvin_x03.html
James Galvin,
X
(Copper Canyon, 2003)
A long time has past since John Keats slouched beneath a nightingale's nest in a plum tree to bemoan a world "Where but to think is to be full of sorrow/and leaden-eyed despairs/Where beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes/Or new love pine at them beyond to morrow." In our cool age, merely to think of any contemporary poet attempting to revisit themes endemic to lyric poetry since Sappho desire, betrayal, trust, loss, loneliness and nature awakens us to just how awesome a challenge it has become to say "my heart aches" without encountering a sea of guffaws. But there is a nightingale in Montana, perched on a windowsill somewhere around James Galvin's ranch, and, as his sixth volume of poetry attests, he hears it loud and clear. Throughout X , a collection of poems dwelling largely on his defunct marriage with fellow poet Jorie Graham, Galvin relies on the reader's own conscience and experience to finish each poem's meaning and affect, often transcending this basic rule of poetic law by digging deeper, excavating past losses and interrogating the difficult present, the struggle to go on. "After bad things happen we always live/A little more," Galvin observes in a language as simple as it is moving. Routinely, Galvin steps out of the way of his poems to let them speak their way out of loss, stifling so much as a jaded chuckle in the textured silence following every final line. If the trick to conveying heartbreak convincingly in contemporary poetry is to simply tell what happened, rather than wrestling readers into feeling your pain

( See review Dr. Galvin, creator and senior editor of the Small Group Study Bible , has extensive experience in small groups.
