is a sometimes terrifying evocation of mental illness; Foreign Parts presents the riches, the humour - and the shadow - potential in friendship between women; the short story collections Blood and Where You Find It deal with repression and chauvinism. Janice Galloway's feminist perspective is creative and without bitterness. An opera based on the life of Mary Shelley, created in collaboration with composer Sally Beamish, was premiered in spring 2001.

When it was first published in Great Britain, Foreign Parts was described as "a road movie for feminists . . . a funny, sharp and gutsy portrayal of female friendship," and "a painstakingly crafted, multilayered investigation of contemporary female experience." What begins as a driving holiday in Northern France for two Scotswomen turns into a caustic and funny account of dysfunctional relationshipsboth between men and women and between women friends. Cassie and Ronain their late thirties, both single and childlessare on each other's nerves from the moment they cross the Channel: Cassie is testy and cynical, Rona patient and plodding. Both are self-conscious of the fact that they seem to fit the stereotype of two "spinsters" linked by loneliness, and consequently rebel against the notion that a woman needs a man to feel "complete." Faced with the dilemma of "fancying men and not liking them very much," the women ponder alternatives as they endure one tourist nightmare after another.

Galloway was born in Saltcoats in Ayrshire and her much-acclaimed first novel, The Trick Is To Keep Breathing , was published in 1989 while she worked as an English teacher. The grim but compelling tale of alienation on a Glasgow housing scheme won the MIND Book of the Year/The Allen Lane Award and a Scottish Arts Council Book Award. It was also shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award, the Irish Times /Aer Lingus International Fiction Prize and was adapted for the stage. The accolades continued with her next two novels and two short-story collections and in 2002, she expanded her repertoire by collaborating with the composer Sally Beamish on an opera libretto, Monster , based on the life of Mary Shelley. Janice Galloway was born on 2 December 1956 in Ardrossan and educated at the University of Glasgow. Her first novel, "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing" (1990) is a remarkable account of a woman's mental breakdown after the death of a lover. It was the MIND Book Of The Year and was shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award. "Foreign Parts" (1994), about two women on holiday in France, won the McVitie's Prize. Galloway's most recent collection of stories is "Where you find it". A gifted performer of her own work, Galloway's public readings are a memorable experience, sometimes assisted perhaps by a little Dutch courage. I first encountered Alasdair Gray's work at a friend's house. It was the middle of a not-good time for me. Suffering from a tenacious depression that made most attempts at talking, getting out of bed, everything really, seem nothing more than variations on a theme of wasting time, I nonetheless persisted with reading because (1) it reminded me there had been things I enjoyed previously and (2) I hoped reading might, sooner or later, turn up something that might help. I wasn't sure how it was going to do this exactly but the hope lingered nonetheless. Off and on, without enthusiasm, I visited people. On one such visit, I fell over Lanark.

"To me it's almost freak, what I end up writing about. I don't really know where it comes from. When you're writing a book, what you're concerned with is getting the damn thing done and what occurs to you is what occurs to you. Well that comes with a big mix of things that end up usually, from a critical stance, being called the writer's voice. And where it comes from is your own personal psychology." Scottish author Janice Galloway got interested in Clara Schumann, wife of the composer Robert Schumann and an artist in her own right, when someone referred to the late Clara as "that dreadful bitch Robert Schumann was married to." Galloway started asking questions about Clara Schumann. "And the more I heard about her, the more I thought: It's all in how you interpret that woman, whether she's a dreadful bitch or not and I started to get more and more interested in her." That interest led, eventually to
