The Kiss Takes Confession
by Tess Gallagher
He was a man between two women,
that condition of amplitude guaranteed
to overvalue. He basked quietly
in their desperate spillover
meant to hold him. With honesty
as policy he'd kept each informed
about the other, as if honesty could convert duplicity to some well-meaning by-product of his foamy approximation at consideration. He glimpsed in himself the pride of "character" which he recirculated between them as sauce to himself, an accolade meant to disarm their chief suspicion, that he would have it all, and scant of guilt. The kiss, like a devouring beauty, perched on his knee as he turned the pages of his scrapbook. There stood his young wife, glowing like a lily, translucent in the blue frieze of time, next to their child. She does not know fate will comb her skull with ashes. How radiantly she wears the waxy glow of the candle assaulted by its flame! She was never, he confessed with a sigh, his soul mate, though the years had "coded

This collection of short stories is one of the best i have ever read. Mostly set in the northwest Gallagher captures the ideals and characteristics of most northwest residents. Masthead (about Carve)
... Return to Table of Contents An Afternoon With Tess Gallagher Tess Gallagher is one of the most beloved and widely read authors in the world today. She has a dozen books in print and has received numerous awards and honorary degrees. She has taught at major universities, produced a screenplay with Robert Altman, heard one of her short stories read on stage by actress Meryl Streep, and seen her poetry translated into Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Romanian, Swedish, Dutch, and German. She was even married to the great American short story writer, Raymond Carver. But ask her about her writing career, and she’ll tell youwithout hint of complaintthat the trip was not easy. This interview was conducted Friday, February 23rd, 2001, at Tess' home in Port Angeles, Washington. Melvin Sterne : Maybe the place to start is to ask you how you got started as a writer, what it was like for you in the early days, what you did to masterand I mean thatmaster your craft. You are both a poet and an accomplished short story writer. What was it like? What did you do? What advice might you offer to emerging writers? Tess Gallagher : Well I started out to be a journalist in this town where I was born, Port Angeles, when I was sixteen. I worked for the downtown paper. When I was seventeen I went away to college, to the University of Washington, and I enrolled in classes with a journalism emphasis. I was crazy about poetry from my high school days, and I got fascinated with the idea of being in Theodore Rothke’s class, so I was brazen enough to put poems forward and to ultimately be taken into that class. And after that, I think journalism just didn’t have a chance. There was just such a level of intensity and, the sense that this man, Theodore Roethke, had dedicated his life in the way. People came to him, who loved poetry, and these were the people I found around metheir respect for him and love of poetryit was quite a bouquet to find yourself admitted into that company.

Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction "I Stop Writing the Poem" is written as if Tess Gallagher were talking to herself in an attempt to console the pain she is feeling at the loss of her husband, Raymond Carver, the famed short story 1992 author. The poem is as much about their relationship as it is about Gallagher's sense of loss. In fact, the entire collection in which this poem is included, Moon Crossing Bridge (an American Library Association Notable Book in poetry, 1993), is about the life and love of Gallagher and Carver, as seen through Gallagher's mourning. Gallagher wrote an essay in 1984, which she called "The Poem as a Reservoir for Grief." In the essay, she refers to her belief that poems are the best way to confront grief. The essay was written several years before Carver died and before Gallagher began writing her way through her sorrow. However, in an interview with Katie Bolick for the

Interview with Tess Gallagher
In this 1986 interview with Don Swaim, the poet Tess Gallagher talks about growing up as the child of a logger in the Pacific Northwest. She recalls the stillness of the forest and the larger-than-life images of the trees. Remembering the past forms the basis of many of her poems. She reads her poem, "Sudden Journey" and talks about the influence of her husband, Raymond Carver, on her writing. It's all right to be a little lost when reading poems, says Tess Gallagher. It's not necessary to understand everything. It's important not to lose a sense of the unknown. Poems don't always give themselves all at once. Listen to the Tess Gallagher interview with Don Swaim, 1986
(24 min. 26 sec.)
Tess Gallagher, author of A Concert of Tenses: Essays on Poetry Soul Barnacles: Ten More Years With Ray Carver Country , and many more, begins talking in this 1990 interview with Don Swaim about Raymond Carver's early years in high school. She talks about Carver trying to fit in at school, his grades, and how his teachers felt about him. Later in life, Raymond Carver developed a problem with alcoholism. Tess Gallagher tells about what he was like as a writer and as a person.
