New Media Presentation Series Christopher Funkhouser “Cybertext Editing and Design: Inter- and Outer- Connections” April 26, 2000 The objective of this presentation is to illustrate how design techniques and content distribution are enhanced by using computers and networks particularly through the online structuring of information. Christopher Funkhouser will highlight the process of incorporating language and visual aspects of computerized text—of combining graphics, sound, animation, text, and video into compelling content. This process depends on understanding and applying the human principles of patience and logic to the design aspects of language, image, linking, and layering. Digital technology is changing the whole nature of document publication in our society. This means that writers and editors from all disciplines need to be prepared to produce and publish work in new ways via the computer. Funkhouser will outline, and then describe in technical detail, a successful methodology established in publishing Newark Review , a web-based literary periodical widely acclaimed as one of the best of today’s electronic journals.

CHRISTOPHER T. FUNKHOUSER from LAYERED EFFECTS IN MULTIPLEX POETRY SINCE BLACK MOUNTAIN The maximization of resources which occurred at Black Mountain is posited as an important and direct influence on performance art and poetry in the United States after the second world war. These developments in twentieth century art and poetry, undoubtedly influenced by dada and other precursors, result from the technological ability for the composer to allow and/or control numerous variables of the human senses within the framework of a performance situation. A preoccupation with and desire for effect upon an audience is what leads creative minds to multimedia. As former Black Mountain faculty member Robert Creeley writes in the Introduction to the Poetry In Motion II cd-rom, "...poets particularly need to be heard, need an active and defining presence, need physical sound and sight." A trajectory of multi-layered poetry in the United States has kept in-step with the localized activities at Black Mountain. Through the late 50s and 60s, the arts were juxtaposed through the activities—the "Happenings"—created by Allan Kaprow and FLUXUS, predominantly in New York City. Kaprow was a student of John Cage's, and saw the importance of breaking down separations between the arts.

Christopher Funkhouser is a poet who has turned his attention to to the area of hypertext poetry. His work includes being an online literary magazine editor, conducting interviews with other poets, and writting essays on the subject of hypermedia. He currently holds a teaching position at NJIT. He and his wife have recently had a daughter. On Funkhouser's EPC Page, there are essays about electronic poetry, and interviews with poets who create this kind of media. Through these pieces, Funkhouser gives the impression that he is very interested in and excited by electronic poetry and its possibilities. He serves as an editor for several online literary magazins, seeming to further immerse himself in this world. Funkhouser's electronic works consist of many different styles. His poetry may or may not contain color, hypertext, and motion. He appears to want to use electronic media to its fullest, and like many hypermedia poets, break new ground in the field. The peom "Mint" by Chris Funkhouser is written in blue type against a white background, giving an immediate impression of coolness. There are many mentions of ice and water, and the poem feels like it flows down the page like ice floats through water. This numbing environment is contradicted somewhat by the mention of different senses, which are sometimes engaged by certain phrases. The end of the poem takes on a moking tone as a woman says that she wants her children too "learn the English language and learn it as well they can," while the poem is far from written in traditional "good English." Funkhouser may be suggesting that perfect grammer is not necessary for creating meaning. I feel that this is a satisfying poem, especially in the mood that it creates. It is dificult to understand what every part means, but it is possible that we are not meant to literaly understand each part.

AN INTERVIEW WITH NATHANIEL MACKEY this text is published in Callaloo , Vol. 18, No. 4 A few brief and informal conversations, occurring after we first met for the first time in 1991, led me to ask Nathaniel Mackey if we could speak more formally about his writing and teaching. He agreed, welcoming the presence of a tape recorder. The following conversation took place at Nathaniel Mackey's home in Santa Cruz on September 3, 1991. An edited version of this interview, given the title "Charting the Outside," was circulated in the November, 1991 issue of Poetry Flash , a northern California poetry newspaper. At the time of this interview, Nathaniel Mackey had authored two chapbooks of poetry, Four for Trane (Golemics, 1978) and Septet for the End of Time (Boneset, 1983). Eroding Witness , his full length collection, was selected by Michael Harper for the National Poetry Series (University of Illinois Press, 1985). Bedouin Hornbook (Callaloo Fiction Series, 1986), volume one of an ongoing prose work, From a Broken Bottle Traces of Perfume Still Emanate , had been published. Subsequently

Jorge Luiz Antonio VISITE O SITE DE JORGE LUIZ ANTONIO ABSTRACT This paper aims at mapping the constituent elements of digital poetry as a genre whose discourse has been adapting itself to the digital-electronic media as a means of survival and renewal of the existing visual and verbal forms.
Having as a goal the delimitation of poetry in relation to other artistic digital forms, a brief report on digital poetics (also called electronic art, webart, cyberart, etc) is then necessary since it traces back, to a certain extent, the route of the word that evokes image, transforms itself in visuality, changes into infographic image, and at the same time becomes movement.
Though not trying to establish a historical or national perspective, the mapping shows a variety of names and kinds of digital poetry such as cyberpoetry, infopoetry, hyperpoetry, interpoetry, virtual poetry, digital poetry, videopoetry, etc.
Within a perspective that relates poetry and image, a small sample of digital poetry will be analysed, in order to set their constituent elements: the micro-computer (hardware and software), digitality, infographic image, poeticity and/or (il)legible word, pluri-signification of the poetry-image relation, the conscious use of poetics by the computer operator-poet, intertextuality and hypertextuality, the similarity to the poetry-making process, the use of verbal-vocal-visual-digital language in its poetic function, etc. ABSTRACT
