Incarnation

Lewis's books dealing with different intelligent forms and their redemption
are his novels "Out of the Silent Planet," and "Perelandra". The first
dealt with Martian forms that were not identically human, because
pre-Incarnation, and the second with a new creation on Venus which, being
post-Incarnation, were in human form (I believe they also had innate
knowledge of Christ, but were capable of being tempted.)
Another *very* interesting treatment of this idea are the books by
Cordwainer Smith, called "Norstrilia" and "the Instrumentality of Man".
These books (fiction) deal in a very deep way with many spiritual aspects
of technology, and specifically address the incarnational question through his animal-people; domestic animals that have been given human characteristics through engineering. One question that underlies his books

Patristic witness to non-literal reading of scripture
Alice Fulton ( Alice-fulton@uiowa.edu
Tue, 26 Mar 1996 12:47:23 -0600
I don't have statistics for how many patristic writers used non-literal
interpretations, but here is a passage from one of them. The force of his
argument doesn't depend upon newer developments in linguistics, archaelogy,
etc.:
"Your God is too small"
[Origen, Priest and Theologian, d. c.254, Treatise on Prayer. This is a
significant patristic witness to the importance of recognizing that the
language of Scripture has to use human analogies to express divine
realities, and that we must be careful not to let our idea of God be
limited by such comparisons.] When "the Father" of the saints is said to be "in heaven", we are not to suppose that he is circumscribed in bodily fashion and dwells "in heaven";

DANCE SCRIPT WITH ELECTRIC BALLERINA
Poems by Alice Fulton Alice Fulton's writing has been characterized by The New Yorker as "electrifying," and the poet herself, according to Publishers Weekly, "may be Dickinson's postmodern heir." Dance Script With Electric Ballerina, Fulton's award-winning first book, is now considered a classic of contemporary poetry. On its release, reviewers commented: "She achieves . . . intellectual substance . . . without sacrificing emotional richness. Fulton's lively, distinctive style and buoyant faith . . . are most evident." Choice "Her fast-paced verse rolls off the tongue like colloquial speech, or flows like rhythms of American jazz." Publishers Weekly "Fulton's distinct voice marks her as a poet to watch." Library Journal One of "two extremely impressive poetic debuts in 1983. By the time she's through, we want to shout 'encore!'" David Lehman, Newsday and The Philadelphia Inquirer "Reading her . . . you must sharpen your spirit to be moved by what is uncanny and rare." Matthew Gilbert

On Poetry
Alice Fulton and her Book of Changes

Alice Fulton collaborates. She has collaborated with other contemporary English-language poets, for example, in the collective anthology After Ovid: New Metamorphoses
ex nihilo
, or from the font of inspiration at the heart of the Romantic Genius. The very notion of intertextuality posits that each poet writes in a context, having read prior poetry and prose, having heard people speak in dictions high and low, and pitching each work to an audience, whether an actual interlocutor, a coterie of like-minded souls, a market, or an imagined 'ideal reader' cobbled together from actual readers the poet has known in her past.
Metamorphoses in Latin under the late Brooks Otis. Prof. Otis had retired from Stanford, and Chapel Hill's Classics department, having no mandatory retirement age, snatched him up to join the eternal conversation in the library of ancient texts, plaster of Paris reproductions of Hellenistic statues, and harried students seeking variant definitions in enormous dictionaries. However, for reasons beyond my understanding, Prof. Otis was out of favor with the classics graduate students, so our class on the Metamorphoses had myself and one other Comparative Literature student, one undergraduate, and only one classics grad student. It was delightful.

Felt
Poems Felt is a fiercely imagined work, at once visceral and cerebral, by a poet of unremitting courage and linguistic intelligence.
Reticent and passionate, elliptical yet available, Fulton's poems consider flaws and failure, touching and not touching. They are fascinated with proximity: the painter's closeness to the canvas, the human kinship with animals, the fan's nearness to the star.
Privacy, the opening and closing of doors, is at the heart of these poems that sing the forms of solitude-the meanings and feelings of virginity, the single-mindedness of fetishism, the tragedy of suicide.
Rather than accept the world as given, Fulton encounters invisible assumptions with magnitude and grace. Hers is a poetry of inconvenient knowledge, in which the surprises of enlightenment can be cruel as well as kind. Felt , a deeply imagined work, at once visceral and cerebral, illuminates the possibilities of twenty-first century poetry. Publishers Weekly Felt The New York Times Book Review Los Angeles Times Book Review (A Best Book of 2001) Felt Rain Taxi Review of Books "For the last 20 years Fulton has been pushing her poetry into new places, incorporating the language of the new sciences, finding and exploiting the multiple layers of sense within even the most common words, and packing her lines and their breaks with sound and meaning, restless even with the very punctuation of the language. . . . This new book has many of those admirable flourishes that Fulton has been perfecting for several years. But

Poetry "There's an air of recklessness that crackles through Alice Fulton's poetry, an electric audacity that powers both her sound and her sense.... Fulton transcribes what might admiringly be called a poetics of contemporary disquiet, jagged and jazzy wordcraft that simultaneously entertains bravado and doubt, irreverence and devotion. These are poems that binge not just on language but on lexicons and argots, poems that lift their riffs not only from the deep wells of the American vernacular but from the streamlined vaults of newfangled technology and scientific determinism.... In Powers Of Congress Alice Fulton shows she's learned a thing or two about levitation." Hungry Mind Review Powers Of Congress exhibits, in dazzling language and complex rhetorical structures, a passionate curiosity about all aspects of modern American life. With a linguistic vigor and intellectual depth that are rare in contemporary poetry, Fulton illuminates such fundamental subjects as war, religion, gender, our obsession with bodily or mechanistic perfection, and the perplexing chasm of consciousness that lies between the "natural" world and what we humans do.
