Travails with Time: An Interview with Carlos Fuentes By Debra A. Castillo
DEBRA CASTILLO: All the critics that have spoken about your work have noted its diversity of style and genre. In Distant Relations , one of the characters says, "The art of narration is a desperate attempt to reestablish analogy without sacrificing differentiation." How does that relate to your sense of your work? CARLOS FUENTES: It relates to its very source, which is Cervantes, of course. I'm really paraphrasing my own idea of Don Quixote and why I think that it is the founding novel of the modern world. I think Don Quixote comes out of the medieval world, the world of chivalry he evokes and reads about and tries to enact, the world of the Middle Ages, which is basically a world of analogy, where everything has a meaning. All words have a precise meaning, a precise function, and all things have a precise place. This order is established by means of analogy on a scale that leads to God. Don Quixote goes out into a world where this is shattered; his search for analogy leads him into a world of proliferating differentiation. The wayside inns, the people he meets, Maritomes, the dukes, and, what is most important of all, the readers of Don Quixote he encounters tell him, "Your world doesn't exist anymore. Your world of unity and analogy is shattered. We offer you this world of infinite diversity." Don Quixote is a great hero of fiction and of philosophyI think of

Jorge Luis Borges Alejo Carpentier Juan Rulfo Carlos Fuentes ... Manuel Puig boom = a deep, hollow sound like the roar of a cannon or of big waves ... a sudden activity and increase in business, prices or values of property... boom-and-bust = an economic cycle of great prosperity followed by a serious depression. From the start literature has had to contend with curious problems in Latin America. Early on the Spanish Inquisition established branches in capitals such as Lima and México. In the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Forbidden Books [c.1570]) it codified what books were to be censored. As Vargas Llosa has commented, one ought to acknowledge the Inquisition's intellectual acuity in recognizing literature's subversive powers. The importation of novels to colonial Spanish America was strictly prohibited by the Spanish Crown since the late sixteenth century. This prohibition, though, was not hermetic and books of chivalry, picaresque novels and even Cervantes's Don Quijote (1605, 1615) managed to circulate. However, the early Latin American writers were forced to channel their inventiveness differently. History texts, chronicles, accounts of the conquest and exploration of America become the only "legal" space where the native imagination can prosper. As a result, Fiction and History become united in a particularly curious way. What is history? and What is fiction? are questions that at some level or other can be asked in dealing with colonial texts and beyond. Two examples:

Carlos Fuentes is Mexico's best-known fiction writer and an important figure in Spanish-American literature. Fuentes writes imaginative and complex narratives that reflect a keen intellectual awareness of history and the workings of power. He has experimented with many varieties of construction in his novels, particularly those involving shifts in place, time, and the identity of characters.
Fuentes' first novel, Where the Air Is Clear (1958), is set in Mexico City and shifts back and forth between the city's past and present. The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962) also moves backward and forward in time as it presents a revolutionary's rise to power and his later moral deterioration. Change of Skin (1967) emphasizes the instability of personal identity. Fuentes' most ambitious novel is Terra Nostra (1975), which goes beyond the known facts of history to offer an alternate version of how events might have unfolded.
Fuentes' later work incorporates elements of popular culture. The Hydra's Head (1977) resembles a thriller full of political intrigue.
