Carlos Fuentes on Chiapas
One of Mexico's most prominent novelists and a member of the official Mexican Commission for Human Rights, Carlos Fuentes is author, most recently, of: Return to Mexico: Journeys Behind the Mask. Commandante Marcos, the spokesman of the Chiapas rebels, has said that Fuentes is his favorite writer. The Chiapas revolt has revealed the deep multicultural rifts that had been masked by official glorification of Mexico's pre- Hispanic past. In the United States, there are civil rights laws for dealing with racial conflict in a multicultural society. We have always congratulated ourselves in Mexico on our extraordinary Indian culture which we display in museums and through imposing monuments along our boulevards. We say we are proud of being the descendants of that culture. The Mexican Revolution made an attempt to respect the identity of the Indian communities of Mexico, recognizing and protecting them and their languages in the constitution. In actual practice, however, we have treated the Indians with more cruelty, perhaps, than Cortez.

The Writings of Carlos Fuentes
By Raymond Leslie Williams
". . . it may well be the most useful book on Fuentes available today." "The first book-length study of Terra Nostra, it sets out to prove that this novel exemplifies Fuentes's idea that 'writing implies an engagement with history, culture and identity.' ...Highly recommended for academic and public libraries." "Fuentes is no longer a Mexican novelist; he is part of world literature, and this book should interest all those who have read him in translation." Smitten by the modernity of Cervantes and Borges at an early age, Carlos Fuentes has written extensively on the cultures of the Americas and elsewhere. His work includes over a dozen novels, among them The Death of Artemio Cruz Christopher Unborn The Old Gringo , and Terra Nostra , several volumes of short stories, numerous essays on literary, cultural, and political topics, and some theater. In this book, Raymond Leslie Williams traces the themes of history, culture, and identity in Fuentes' work, particularly in his complex, major novel

REBEL, INTERNATIONALIST, ESTABLISHMENTARIAN:
THE MEANDERING ROAD OF CARLOS FUENTES
Carlos Fuentes was an internationalist from birth. Though one of Mexico's best-known citizens, he was born on November 11, 1928, in Panama, where his father represented the Mexican government. Mexico played only a minor role in his early childhood, most of which was spent in Washington, DC. He also lived in Chile and Argentina. In 1944, at the age of sixteen, he came to Mexico. He received a law degree at Mexico's National Autonomous University and in 1950 went to Geneva, Switzerland, to serve as secretary to the Mexican delegate to the International Law Commission of the United Nations. While in Geneva, Fuentes wrote his doctoral dissertation while also working as press secretary at the U.N. Information Center. He returned to Mexico in 1951. Before long, Fuentes was following two careers diplomacy and literature. His first major work, published in 1954, was Los días enmascaradas ("The Masked Days"), containing three short stories. In 1956 he teamed up with Manuel Carballo to found a literary publication called Revista Mexicana de Literatura. Between 1956 and 1959, in a role that combined government service and the arts, Fuentes was director of international cultural relations for Mexico's Ministry of Exterior Relations (Foreign Affairs). Fidel Castro came to power in 1959 and Fuentes was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Cuban Marxist leader. This militant stand brought him into disfavor with the U.S. government and Fuentes was barred for a time from entering the United States. He moved to Paris in the mid-sixties and in 1975 was appointed Mexican ambassador to France. But he resigned in 1977. He had become dissatisfied with his government, then headed by President José López Portillo.
