  • Biography Frost was one of America's leading 20th-century poets. A four time Pulitzer Prize winner, he wrote poetry that was both traditional and experimental, often associated with New England, but very universal. His first poem, "My Butterfly: An Elegy", was sold to The Independent, a New York literary journal, in 1894. He was married to Elinor White in 1895, and attended Harvard from 1897 to 1899. He operated a farm in Derry, New Hampshire and taught at Derry's Pinkerton Academy until 1912, when he sold the farm and moved to England. In 1913 and 1914, his first two books of poetry, "A Boy's Will" and "North of Boston" were released. His success as a poet abroad led to the publication of "North of Boston" in the United States in 1915.

Frost published his first books in Great Britain in the 1910s, but he soon became in his own country the most read and constantly anthologized poet, whose work was made familiar in classrooms and lecture platforms. Frost was awarded the Pulitzer Prize four times. Nature and rural surroundings became for Frost a source for insights into deeper design of life. He once said: "Literature begins with geography." FIRE AND ICE
Some say the world will end in fire,
    Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.
Robert Frost was born in San Francisco, California. His father William Frost, a journalist and an ardent Democrat, died when Frost was about eleven years old. His Scottish mother, the former Isabelle Moody, resumed her career as a schoolteacher to support her family. The family lived in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with Frost's paternal grandfather, William Prescott Frost, who gave his grandson a good schooling. In 1892 Frost graduated from a high school and attended Darthmouth College for a few months. Over the next ten years he held a number of jobs. Frost worked among others in a textile mill and taught Latin at his mother's school in Methuen, Massachusetts. In 1894 the

ROBERT LEE FROST Robert Lee Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, California. When he was 11, his father's died, and his family moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts. Frost only sporadically attended college and made a living by working various odd jobs. Although he wrote poety, he had limited success in having them published. However, in 1894 he sold "My Butterfly: An Elegy" to a New York literary journal, The Independent. The following year, Frost married Elinor White, whom he had known in high school. In 1912 Frost moved to England. There he befriended poets Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, and Lascelles Abercrombie, who did much to aid his literary career. With their help, Frost published his first two volumes of poetry, A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914). These works won him immediate recognition on both sides of the Atlantic that resulted in American publication of the books, and in establishing Frost's transatlantic reputation. Sales from his works enabled Frost to buy a farm in Franconia, N.H. There, he continued to write poetry with increasing success, publishing a third book, Moutain Interval in 1916. He won a Pulitzer Prize in poetry for New Hampshire, published in 1923. Over the years he received an unprecedented number and range of literary, academic, and public honors, including, in 1961, being the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration; he read for John F. Kennedy. Robert Lee Frost, America's leading 20th-century poet and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, died January 29, 1963, in Boston.

    Robert Frost: After Apple-Picking (1914)
In the two poems below we see how, like Wordsworth, Frost takes an ordinary experience and transforms it into a meditative moment, a philosophical musing. Apple-picking slides gradually away from merely harvesting fruit to considering how life has been experienced fully but with some regrets and mistakes. The reference to winter coming on feels like the presence of mortalilty. The question about what kind of sleep to anticipate suggests untroubled oblivion or possibly some kind of new life just as the woodchuck reawakens to fresh life in the spring after his hibernation.
At what point does the poem begin to suggest something more than realistic description of an experience? What words hint at something symbolic developing?
My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree
    Toward heaven still,
    And there's a barrel that I didn't fill
Beside it, and there may be two or three
Apples I didn't pick upon some bough.
But I am done with apple-picking now.
Essence of winter sleep is on the night

Poems are placed along the trail as in New Hampshire. It happened that we were the only ones visiting at the time. Walking there was a peaceful experience and I believe that Frost would have enjoyed this simple but beautiful tribute. We had spent some time wandering through the woods that weekend and I thought of Frost and his relationship to Nature. I pictured him searching for orchids or studying a flower beside a tree. Outside it became clearer why it was so important to him. Frost was able to see the meaning in Nature and translate it into poetry. The wide trail wanders into the woods and traces a rushing brook through the trees into a clearing that has a full view of the Green Mountains. Here we stopped and spent some time reading his poetry in the open air. Along side the brook we stood staring through the birches to the mountains beyond. It was the perfect setting to enjoy Frost, watching the branches sway back and forth just sitting and staring at the reddish brown field before the Green Mountain background. I thought of the complicated man and poet that he was and how for two days we had traced his steps and traveled his roads and I felt closer to him and his work.
