IEEE Reception at Benjamin Franklin House The preservation of the only Franklin home remaining in the world to its 18th century condition is being undertaken by the Friends of Benjamin Franklin House with assistance from the RSA. Benjamin Franklin House, 36 Craven Street, London, England, is the only Franklin home remaining in the world today. Phase I, the structural repair of the House, was completed by the close of the 1990s.. The interior conservation and the establishment of a centre dedicated to Franklin - his ideals and his extensive contributions to the Age of Enlightenment - will complete Phase II and carry forth Franklin's influence and legacy, which has lasted for two and a half centuries, into the next millennium. Benjamin Franklin was a Member of the Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (as it was then known) and during his time in England he served on some of the committees of the Society. The Society's influence on Franklin was recognised in 1956 by the Senate of the United States of America when it nominated the RSA as one of only twenty organisations to receive a

146. E.Power Biggs And His Keyboard Glass Armonica
Story of a sidelight to his organist career wherein he attempted to honor Mozart and benjamin franklin with a modified instrument and failed splendidly.
http://www.glassarmonica.com/armonica/biggs/
E Power Biggs Attempts a Keyboard Glass Armonica
Power Biggs (1906-1977), the famous English concert organist, was interested in Americana and musical technology, so when, in 1956, the 200th anniversary of Mozart's birth and 250th anniversary of Ben Franklin's birth coincided, Biggs decided to perform Mozart's music on Franklin's invention. Biggs was convinced that the Mozart works could only be played on a keyboard version of the armonica, and decided to perform the Mozart works on such an instrument for the anniversary.
Here follows an excerpt from E. Power Biggs, Concert Organist , by Barbara Owen (Indiana Univ Pr, 1987, pg. 106 - 111) that recounts the story of Biggs "keyboard glass armonica"...
"His voluminous correspondence and library research began early in 1955, and one of his first discoveries was that while Franklin's own keyboardless Armonica still existed in a Philadelphia residence, not one keyboard version or fragment thereof survived anywhere. This, of course, was the instrument Biggs was most interested in, since he believed that the music by Mozart could not be played without a keyboard version. When hopes of finding a restorable antique faded, Biggs persuaded the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to sponsor the construction of one, and the Academy in turn interested the Franklin Savings Bank in financing the project. One of the Academy's members, Harlow Shapley of the Harvard Observatory, caught Biggs's enthusiasm and became a willing accomplice to his research and fund-raising activities.

FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN CROMWELL (1805-1873). Benjamin Cromwell Franklin, judge and legislator, the eldest son of Abednego (?) and Mary Graves (Cleveland) Franklin, was born in Georgia on April 25, 1805. He was educated at Franklin College in Athens, Georgia, and admitted to the bar in 1827. In 1835 he traveled to Velasco, Texas, and shortly afterward joined an expedition against Indians. In December 1835 at a public meeting at Columbia he was among those who favored immediate declaration of war against Mexico. On April 7, 1836, he was commissioned a captain in the Texas army by President David G. Burnet, qv but since he was not assigned to the command of a company at San Jacinto, he fought there as a private in Capt. Robert J. Calder's qv company. On April 23, 1836, Secretary of War Thomas J. Rusk qv directed Franklin to proceed to Galveston Island and inform President Burnet and his cabinet of the victory at San Jacinto. Franklin later received a bounty warrant for 320 acres for his service and was among the first to purchase land at the future site of Houston. He was the first man to hold a judicial position in the Republic of Texas.

    Poor Richard's Almanack, 1733
    Courteous Reader_,
I might in this place at tempt to gain thy Favour, by declaring that I write Almanacks with no other View than that of the publick Good; but in this I should not be sincere; and Men are now a-days too wise to be deceiv'd by Pretences how specious soever. The plain Truth of the Matter is, I am excessive poor, and my Wife, good Woman, is, I tell her, excessive proud; she cannot bear, she says, to sit spinning in her Shift of Tow, while I do nothing but gaze at the Stars; and has threatned more than once to burn all my Books and Rattling-Traps (as she calls my Instruments) if I do not make some profitable Use of them for the good of my Family. The Printer has offer'd me some considerable share of the Profits, and I have thus begun to comply with my Dame's desire.

    Poor Richard's Almanack, 1734
Courteous Readers, Your kind and charitable Assistance last Year, in purchasing so large an Impression of my Almanacks, has made my Circumstances much more easy in the World, and requires my grateful Acknowledgment. My Wife has been enabled to get a Pot of her own, and is no longer oblig'd to borrow one from a Neighbour; nor have we ever since been without something of our own to put in it. She has also got a pair of Shoes, two new Shifts, and a new warm Petticoat; and for my part, I have bought a second-hand Coat, so good, that I am now not asham'd to go to Town or be seen there. These Things have render'd her Temper so much more pacifick than it us'd to be, that I may say, I have slept more, and more quietly within this last Year, than in the three foregoing Years put together. Accept my hearty Thanks therefor, and my sincere Wishes for your Health and Prosperity. Mr. Leeds was not only profoundly skilful in the useful Science he profess'd, but he was a Man of exemplary Sobriety, a most sincere Friend, and an exact Performer of his Word. These valuable Qualifications, with many others, so much endear'd him to me, that although it should be so, that, contrary to all Probability, contrary to my Prediction and his own, he might possibly be yet alive, yet my Loss of Honour as a Prognosticator, cannot afford me so much Mortification, as his Life, Health and Safety would give me Joy and Satisfaction. I am, Courteous and kind Reader
