Franklin, Benjamin
b. Boston, MA 17 Jan 1706 d. Philadelphia, PA 17 April 1790 author, printer, scientist (electricity, physics, oceanography, meteorology), diplomat Benjamin Franklin, in addition to his other pursuits, was interested in promoting spelling reform. In 1768, while living in London, he wrote A Scheme for a new Alphabet and a Reformed Mode of Spelling , a reasonably accurate phonetic system for spelling English which, published in 1779, greatly influence Noah Webster. His new phonetic alphabet consisted of 26 symbols: the conventional letters c j q w x , and y were eliminated as redundant and six new characters, were devised for sounds for which he thought there was no unambiguous orthographic representation; see Fig. 1 . The remaining letters of the traditional Roman alphabet were retained but their sound value was strictly defined according to the principle 'one symbol (or unique digraph), one sound'. Thus g could only represent the voiced velar stop, as in give, never the voiced palatal affricate, as in gentle . This affricate and its voiceless counterpart (as in chew ) he represented by clusters of stop plus palato-alveolar fricative (the fricative portion being the voiceless one in both cases). Other notable features of his system are: 1) the use of double vs. single vowel letters to stand for long vs. short vowels, e.g.

84. Quick Biography Of Benjamin Franklin
Concise illustrated biography covers the most important aspects of franklin's life.
http://www.ushistory.org/franklin/facts/index.htm
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. In all, Josiah would father 17 children. Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer. After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell their products in the streets.
Apprentice Printer
When Benjamin was 15 his brother started The New England Courant the first "newspaper" in Boston. Though there were two papers in the city before James's Courant , they only reprinted news from abroad. James's paper carried articles, opinion pieces written by James's friends, advertisements, and news of ship schedules. Benjamin wanted to write for the paper too, but he knew that James would never let him. After all, Benjamin was just a lowly apprentice. So Ben began writing letters at night and signing them with the name of a fictional widow, Silence Dogood. Dogood was filled with advice and very critical of the world around her, particularly concerning the issue of how women were treated. Ben would sneak the letters under the print shop door at night so no one knew who was writing the pieces. They were a smash hit, and everyone wanted to know who was the real "Silence Dogood."

"I cannot but lament . . . the impending Calamities Britain and her Colonies are about to suffer, from great Imprudencies on both Sides Passion governs, and she never governs wisely Anxiety begins to disturb my Rest . . .
Benjamin Franklin Feb. 5, 1775 In his many careers as printer, moralist, essayist, civic leader, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, and philosopher, Benjamin Franklin became for later generations of Americans both a spokesman, a model for the national character, and considered as a "Founding Father." He was born in Boston on Jan. 17, 1706, into a pious Puritan household. His father, Josiah, was a candlemaker and a skillful mechanic, but Benjamin said that his father's "great Excellence lay in a sound understanding, and solid Judgment." He described his mother, originally named Abiah Folger and born on the island of Nantucket, as "a discreet and virtuous Woman." His parents raised a family of 13 children. In honoring them and in a lifelong affection for New England ways, Franklin demonstrated the lasting impact of his Puritan heritage.
~ The Bookman ~ After less than two years of formal schooling, Franklin was pressed into his father's trade, but his more profound talents proved to be intellectual. He devoured books by John Bunyan, Plutarch, Daniel Defoe, and Cotton Mather at home, and, after being apprenticed to his brother James, printer of The New England Courant, he read virtually every book that came to the shop. He generally absorbed the values and philosophy of the English Enlightenment. Like his favorite author, Joseph Addison, whose essays in the Spectator he virtually memorized, Franklin added the good sense, tolerance, and urbanity of the neoclassic age to his family's Puritan earnestness. He rejected his father's Calvinist theology, however, and soon espoused what became a lifelong belief in rational Christianity.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790), American diplomat, statesman and scientist.
FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN His dress, the simplicity of his external appearance, the friendly meekness of the old man, and the apparent humility of the Quaker, procured for Freedom a mass of votaries among the court circles who used to be alarmed at its coarseness and unsophisticated truths. Such was the number of portraits,2 busts and medallions of him in circulation before he left Paris that he would have been recognized from them by any adult citizen in any part of the civilized world. A summary of so versatile a genius is impossible. His services to America in England and France rank him as one of the heroes of the American War of Independence and as the greatest of American diplomats. Almost the only American scientist of his day, he displayed remarkably deep as well as remarkably varied abilities in science and deserved the honors enthusiastically given him by the savants of Europe. 2. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin In part two of his Autobiography, Benjamin Franklin, with tongue presumably in cheek, relates how, in an effort at self-improvement, he composes a list of thirteen virtues which he then attempts to master. “Sincerity” occupies the seventh position, but Franklin modifies this in his precept, saying, “Use no hurtful deceit” (1385). Franklin might just as easily have defined “Sincerity” the way D.H. Lawrence does in the list he compiled as a contrast to what he considers Franklin’s guide to becoming a “virtuous little automation...” (69): “To be sincere is to remember that I am I, and that the other man is not me” (71). The “other man” in Franklin’s case may be his younger self, the one whose less than admirable behavior is treated in his memoirs in a way that brings to mind another of his virtues: “Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself...” (1384). Never in his Autobiography does Franklin describe himself as a disobedient son, but by threatening to run away from home rather than follow in his father’s footsteps as a candlemaker, a rebellious nature is suggested (1316). Franklin also boasts that he was “generally a leader among the boys,” but he leads the boys on a heist, stealing the stones from a construction site so Ben and his buddies can build a wharf. As a “leader among the boys,” Franklin was actually setting a bad example, but he sees his role as a positive one, an example of “an early projecting public spirit” (1314).

The country-seat of Bishop Shipley, the good bishop, as Dr. Franklin used to style him.B. DEAR SON: I have ever had pleasure in obtaining any little anecdotes of my ancestors. You may remember the inquiries I made among the remains of my relations when you were with me in England, and the journey I undertook for that purpose. Imagining it may be equally agreeable to you to know the circumstances of my life, many of which you are yet unacquainted with, and expecting the enjoyment of a week's uninterrupted leisure in my present country retirement, I sit down to write them for you. To which I have besides some other inducements. Having emerged from the poverty and obscurity in which I was born and bred, to a state of affluence and some degree of reputation in the world, and having gone so far through life with a considerable share of felicity, the conducing means I made use of, which with the blessing of God so well succeeded, my posterity may like to know, as they may find some of them suitable to their own situations, and therefore fit to be imitated. He had formed a short-hand of his own, which he taught me, but, never practising it, I have now forgot it. I was named after this uncle, there being a particular affection between him and my father. He was very pious, a great attender of sermons of the best preachers, which he took down in his short-hand, and had with him many volumes of them. He was also much of a politician; too much, perhaps, for his station. There fell lately into my hands, in London, a collection he had made of all the principal pamphlets, relating to public affairs, from 1641 to 1717; many of the volumes are wanting as appears by the numbering, but there still remain eight volumes in folio, and twenty-four in quarto and in octavo. A dealer in old books met with them, and knowing me by my sometimes buying of him, he brought them to me. It seems my uncle must have left them here, when he went to America, which was about fifty years since. There are many of his notes in the margins.
