Practical yet idealistic, hard-working and enormously successful, Franklin recorded his early life in his famous Autobiography . Writer, printer, publisher, scientist, philanthropist, and diplomat, he was the most famous and respected private figure of his time. He was the first great self-made man in America, a poor democrat born in an aristocratic age that his fine example helped to liberalize. Franklin was a second-generation immigrant. His Puritan father, a chandler (candle-maker), came to Boston, Massachusetts, from England in 1683. In many ways Franklin's life illustrates the impact of the Enlightenment on a gifted individual. Self- educated but well-read in John Locke, Lord Shaftesbury, Joseph Addison, and other Enlightenment writers, Franklin learned from them to apply reason to his own life and to break with tradition in particular the old-fashioned Puritan tradition when it threatened to smother his ideals. While a youth, Franklin taught himself languages, read widely, and practiced writing for the public. When he moved from Boston to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Franklin already had the kind of education associated with the upper classes. He also had the Puritan capacity for hard, careful work, constant self- scrutiny, and the desire to better himself. These qualities steadily propelled him to wealth, respectability, and honor. Never selfish, Franklin tried to help other ordinary people become successful by sharing his insights and initiating a characteristically American genre the self-help book.

He also experimented with Leyden Jars In 1752, he flew a kite attached to a silk string in a thunderstorm, and showed that a metal key tied to the thread would charge a Leyden jar (Incidentally, the next two people who attempted the experiment were killed in the effort.) His experiments with Leyden jars showed that they discharged more easily if near a pointed surface. He thus suggested the use of lightning rods. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) from a letter to Joseph Priestley A Treasury of Science In compliance with your request, I have endeavoured to recollect the circumstances of the American experiments I formerly mentioned to you of raising a flame on the surface of some waters there. In 1765, The Reverend Dr. Chandler received a letter from Dr. Finley, President of the College in that province, relating the same experiment. It was read at the Royal Society, November 21st of that year, but not printed in the Transactions; perhaps because it was thought too strange to be true, and some ridicule might be apprehended, if any member should attempt to repeat it, in order to ascertain, or refute it. The following is a copy of that account. "A worthy gentleman, who lives at a few miles distance, informed me, that in a certain small cove of a mill-pond, near his house, he was surprised to see the surface of the water blaze like inflamed spirits. I soon after went to the place, and made the experiment with the same success. The bottom of the creek was muddy, and when stirred up, so as to cause a considerable curl on the surface, and a lighted candle held within two or three inches of it, the whole surface was in a blaze, as instantly as the vapour of warm inflammable spirits, and continued, when strongly agitated, for the space of several seconds. It was at first imagined to be peculiar to that place; but upon trial it was soon found, that such a bottom in other places exhibited the same phenomenon. The discovery was accidentally made by one belonging to the mill."

World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN , newspaperman, scientist, inventor, philosopher, politician, and diplomat. Born in Boston, the son of a soap maker, Franklin was apprenticed to his printer brother James at twelve. He was soon contributing witty essays to James's newspaper under various pen names. In 1723 he moved to Philadelphia and launched the Pennsylvania Gazette, which rapidly became the most successful newspaper in the colonies. His Poor Richard's Almanack, which he published from 1733 to 1758, was studded with wry aphorisms Franklin borrowed from numerous sources and frequently rewrote. He helped launch projects to pave, clean, and light Philadelphia's streets and founded the American Philosophical Society, the first circulating library in America, and an academy that grew into the University of Pennsylvania. In 1743 he invented a heat-efficient stove to warm houses. Retiring from newspapering in 1748, he turned to the study of electricity. His observations, including his famous experiment with a kite to verify the identity of electricity and lightning, won him world fame. Already a leader in Pennsylvania's politics, Franklin went to England in 1757 to represent the colony in its quarrel with the descendants of William Penn. He remained there until 1775, becoming agent for several other colonies and de facto ambassador for all thirteen. At first a strong believer in the value of a united empire, he grew disillusioned with England's corrupt politics and aristocratic society, though he made lasting friendships with many prominent men. In 1765 American objections to the Stamp Act caught him by surprise, but he quickly joined the opponents. His testimony before Parliament helped persuade the members to repeal the measure.
