Dana-Thomas House
Springfield's Dana-Thomas House is the best preserved and most complete of Frank Lloyd Wright's early "Prairie" houses. The structure has changed little since its contruction in 1902-04 for Springfield socialite and women's activist Susan Lawrence Dana. More than one hundred pieces of original Wright-designed white oak furniture are still in place along with two hundred fifty art glass doors, windows, and light panels. Two hundred original light fixtures and skylights illuminate the interior. Original sculptures in terra cotta by Richard W. Bock ornament the vestibule and reception hall, and the only George Niedecken mural in any Wright house graces the four dining room walls. The Dana-Thomas House is typical of the Prairie style, which is characterized on the exterior by low horizontal roofs, wide overhanging eaves, and rows of ribbon art glass windows. A raised main living level, open floor plan, and centralized fireplace and hearth are common features of the interior.

In 1904, the Dana House was Wright's largest commission. Joining Wright in this project were Walter Burley Griffin, Marion Mahoney and William Drummond. The Dana House allowed Wright to experiment with integrated decorative designs as will as structural element. Beyond the essence of an architectural masterpiece of international significance, the house is a brilliant showcase of craftsmanship in glassmaking, woodcarving and the decorative arts. About the Readings
THOMAS FRANK
Thomas Frank is the editor-in-chief of The Baffler Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Week . No longer does corporate America dream of itself driving the quiet, tree-shaded lanes in Dad's Oldsmobile; it roars down the highway on a Harley, a dog-eared copy of On the Road in hand, and a wild ear-shattering whoop just audible over the rock n' roll on the stereo. Corporate America, according to Frank, wants to be with-it, hip, and above all rebellious as the punks of yesteryear. Frank asks us: is this rebellion? Can corporate America strut like James Dean? Can power rap with the masses? Can Coke really be It The Baffler.

Frank, Thomas The Conquest of Cool Business Culture, Counterculture, and the Rise of Hip Consumerism . xiv, 308 p., 19 halftones, 8 tables. 5_3/4 x 9 1997 Cloth $22.95 0-226-25991-9 Fall 1997
Paper $17.50 0-226-26012-7 Fall 1998 While the youth counterculture remains the most evocative and best-remembered symbol of the cultural ferment of the 1960s, the revolution that shook American business during those boom years has gone largely unremarked. In this fascinating and revealing study, Thomas Frank shows how the youthful revolutionaries were joinedand even anticipated by such unlikely allies as the advertising industry and the men's clothing business. "[Thomas Frank is] perhaps the most provocative young cultural critic of the moment."Gerald Marzorati, New York Times Book Review "An indispensable survival guide for any modern consumer." Publishers Weekly , starred review "Frank makes an ironclad case not only that the advertising industry cunningly turned the countercultural rhetoric of revolution into a rallying cry to buy more stuff, but that the process itself actually predated any actual counterculture to exploit."Geoff Pevere, Toronto Globe and Mail The Conquest of Cool helps us understand why, throughout the last third of the twentieth century, Americans have increasingly confused gentility with conformity, irony with protest, and an extended middle finger with a populist manifesto. . . . His voice is an exciting addition to the soporific public discourse of the late twentieth century."T. J. Jackson Lears

Distributed for the Prickly Paradigm Press. 53 p. 4 1/2 x 7 2002 Paper $10.00 0-9717575-4-2 Fall 2002 Thomas Frank has been sending wake-up calls to just about everyone within reach over the past decade, in venues from The Village Voice to Harper's . His takes on labor politics, advertising, the virtues of the Midwest, and how un-cool you really are have won him a wide audience, and in this piece, Frank gives us a reading of cultural studiesviewed by some as an important new perspective in the academy, but by others as an unwieldy theoretical fad. Novel, thermostabie small molecules from hyperthermophiles. Isolation of novel thermophiles. Research Interests My research has encompassed a wide range of biological systems, including both bacterial and eukaryotic molecular biology . My recent work has focused on the Archaea, a group of microbes that lies intermediate between bacteria and eukaryotes, and includes many organisms from extreme environments, including hyperthermophiles, which are organisms that can grow at temperatures near to or above 100°C. As far as we know, these organisms represent the upper temperature limit for biological systems, and my main objective is to define the molecular adaptations that allow their metabolism and genomic replication to proceed at temperatures that destroy "normal" proteins and denature unprotected DNA in seconds. There are four main objectives in our laboratory at present: 1) To examine the structure and function of model enzymes such as glutamate dehydrogenase, proteases and nucleases from several hyperthermophiles; 2) to examine DNA stabilization and repair mechanisms in these organisms and 3) to isolate new extreme thermophiles and hyperthermophiles producing novel metabolism and therapeutic compounds.
