Transcript of a lecture by Anthony Anderson on the persecution of Jews under the German occupation, when some 70% of all Jews living in Holland perished in the Holocaust.

This is a transcript of a lecture which was presented by Anthony Anderson at the University of Southern California on October 24, 1995. Address inquiries and comments to: anthonya@usc.edu
For bibliographical purposes this web-site can be cited as follows: Anderson, Anthony E. (1995). Anne Frank was not alone: Holland and the Holocaust [Online]. Available: http://www-lib.usc.edu/~anthonya/holo.htm [1995, October 24]. In my talk last week, A Forgotten Chapter: Holland Under the Third Reich I stated that 70% of the Jews in Holland perished in the Holocaust. This 70% figure represents the highest loss in any country occupied by the Germans in western Europe. In my talk today I will try to explain why the percentage in Holland was just so high as it was.
NAZI GERMANY
Before
discussing Holland, it is necessary to say something about Germany and what first had happened there. In January, 1933 Hitler and his Nazis took over power. The core tenet of Nazi ideology was its belief that the Germanic people, the Aryans were the "superior race" of people. On the other end of the scale, the "inferior peoples" were the Slavs, the Gypsies, and above all, the Jews. In Hitler's twisted thinking, the Jews were "parasites", "bloodsuckers" who more than anything else had led to Germany's defeat in World War I. In the new Germany which Hitler hoped to build, the country would achieve its greatness only when the Jews in Germany were no more. Beginning in 1933 Hitler would take away the rights of German Jews until finally in 1942 they would not even possess the right to live.

out of 4 Starring: Glenn Close Kenneth Branagh Director: Jon Blair Rated: PG RunTime: 117 Minutes Release Date: February Genre: Documentary Buy this DVD Amazon.com Buy this Video ... Half.com Review by Steve Rhodes 4 stars out of 4 ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED is a fresh telling of the tragic life of Anne Frank. It is a documentary where Anne's friends are interviewed and these interviews are beautifully interwoven by the editor Karen Steininger with moving and still images of Anne's era along with videos of the attic where she and seven others hid. This is not a sentimental film neither is it ever manipulative. It records the history in a stark, but effective and factual retelling. Most films about Anne Frank have been entitled THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK and center on the time of the diary with her as the focus. In ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED, the brilliant new director, writer, and producer Jon Blair chooses to consider the totality of her life from her father's marriage to after her death, and he also dwells more on the other people ensconced with her. In this more complete rendition, Anne comes alive as much more human and her death even more tragic. The story is told chronologically, and there is as much time devoted to the periods before and after the diary as to the diary period itself.

THE INSPIRATION OF ANNE FRANK
by Randy Berkman, Ph.D.
When a rude young man asked Supreme Court Justice Frankfurter to give a reason that humanity would be worth saving, he replied "I have read Anne Frank's Diary." When the play based on the Diary was shown to German audiences in the '50's, waves of guilt and shame were released. For the first time, the German people began to confront the events of World War II. One West German student wrote: "I am not putting it properly when I say that I was shaken by the book. No, it goes deeper than that. Many books have shaken me up which I later managed to forget. But this diary has moved me to the depths and left a permament impression. It has awakened an ideal within me that must shape whatever I do in the future." 1
A young woman from the Philippines wrote "I first read Anne's diary when I was 15. I am now 19 and of all the books in the world I cherish her diary most. Although she is not a philosopher, a Nobel prize winner, or a great contemporary thinker, she has influenced me as no one else could. I feel strongly that the diary has become a part of me. It has made me aware of myself. I now realize my shortcomings, my needs, my longings. I am not afraid anymore. And, like Anne, I want to do things with great force, great determination."
Many people already know the story of Anne Frank's 25 months in hiding in an Amsterdam "secret annexe" with her mother, father, sister, and four other Jews fleeing Nazi persecution; and that she died of typhus in the German concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen in 1945, three months before her 16th birthday.

Anne Frank was one of the Jewish victims of Nazi persecution during the second world war. After Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, increasingly severe anti-Jewish measures began here as well. The Frank family tried to escape by going into hiding. On July 1942, Otto Frank, Edith Frank-Hollander and their daughters Margot and Anne hid in this building on the Prinsengracht. They where later joined by Mr. and Mrs Daan, their sun Peter and Mr. Dussel. The building consists of two parts : a front house and a back anex. Otto Frank's business was located in the front house. The uppermost floors of the back anexe became the hiding place. After more than two years the group was betrayed and deported. Anne and Margot died of typhes in Bergen-Belsen in March 1945, only a few weeks before this concentration camp was liberated. Otto Frank, the only member of the group to survive, returned after the war. During the hiding period Anne Frank kept a diary. In it she described daily life in the back anexe, the isolation and the fear of discovery. Anne's diary survived the war: after the betrayal it was found by Miep Gies, one of the helpers. When it was confirmed that Anne would not be returning, Miep gave the manuscripts to Otto Frank. In 1947 the first Dutch edition appeared. Since then the diary has been published in more then 55 languages.

Week 1
1. Have students list the names of all the people that they know from the period of the Holocaust on the board (Anne Frank, Adolf Hitler, etc). Ask students why Anne Frank's name is so recognizable? Isn't it amazing that one 13 year old girl could be that well known? (10 min) 2. Talk with kids to determine what they know about the Anne Frank story (brief synopsis). Have students describe why Anne went into hiding, how long there, what happened to her. Use point and talk method point to one student and have her/him start the story; at some point while s/he is talking point to another student and have them continue the story. DON'T CORRECT ANY MISTAKES IN THE STORY!!!! (15 min) 3. Discuss that sometimes people who are well known are surrounded by myth. Ask what kind of myths, legends, etc, students have heard about currently famous people (Madonna, Michael Jackson, etc.). Ask where these myths came from (television, movies, articles written by people who may or may not know the person, stories heard from friends, gossip, etc). Discuss that the Anne Frank story is also surrounded by some myths, and that the class will attempt to show these myths and what is true about Anne. Explain that the only way to do that is to look at what is true (actual Diaries straight from Anne's mouth [maybe], and compare that to movie version, play version, ballet version, things written about Anne, and what we already think we know about Anne) define primary versus secondary source. (15 min)
