B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Anne Frank (1929-1945) Anne Frank's world famous diary charts two years of her life from 1942 to 1944, when her family were hiding in Amsterdam from German Nazis. The diary begins just before the family retreated into their 'Secret Annexe'. Anne Frank recorded mostly her hopes, frustrations, clashes with her parents, and observation of her companions. Its first version, which appeared in 1947, was edited by Anne's father, who removed certain family references and some of her highly intimate confessions. "I haven't written for a few days, because I wanted first of all to think about my diary. It's an odd idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because I have never done so before, but because it seems to me that neither I - nor for that matter anyone else - will be interested in the unbosomings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl. Still, what does that matter? I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart." (from The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank In 1944 Gestapo was informed of the flat - from 10 000 Jews, who went into hiding, some 5 000 were betrayed. SS Officer Karl Joseph Silberbauer - found in the 1960s by Simon Wiesenthal - arrested the Frank and the Van Pels families. The Franks were transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where Anne's mother died. Anne and her sister were transferred from the Dutch concentration camp, Westerbork, to Bergen-Belsen where they both died of typhus.

3. FRANK Anne

Anne Frank
I am writing a report on the translation of the Anne Frank Diary, and so far, I have been unlucky in finding any information about this topic. I am wanting to know about the original translator, how many languages the diary has been translated into, why it was initially translated and other language issues that the diary presents. It is not a holocaust essay, but primarily a language essay. Would it be possible to recommend sources and texts to help me in my project? Much appreciated
Marty Kelley answers:
I am one of the volunteers who answers questions for The Holocaust History Project. The most authoritative guide to the history of Anne Franhk's diaries would be The Diary of Anne Frank: The Critical Edition , Edited by David Barnouw and Gerrold Van Der Stroom. (New York: Doubleday, 1989.) While this book may not have an utterly exhaustive list of the various translations and editions the Diary has been published in, it does provide good coverage of the basic questions you ask here. Introduction Anne Frank was a young girl whose life comes alive when reading her story, The Dairy of Anne Frank . People all over the world are able to see what life as a persecuted Jew was like during World War II; thus gaining an appreciation for the sacrifices people made in the struggle to stay alive. Anne Frank did not become famous until after her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and after the liberation of all concentration camps. Otto Frank, the only surviving member of the people hiding in the Secret Annex, later had Anne's dairy published.

Anne Frank was born in 1929 in Frankfurt am Main in Germany . In 1933, the anti-Jewish National Socialist Party led by Hitler comes to power. Anne Frank's Jewish parents Edith and Otto Frank perceive that there is no future in Germany for themselves and their children. They flee to the Netherlands in 1933. Anne is then four years old. Until she is eleven she grows up without a care in a relatively safer Holland. In 1940, the Netherlands is occupied by Germany and the protection that Holland provides comes to an end. Anne's life is increasingly restricted by the anti-Jewish Decrees. Beginning in , the first Jews receive call-up notices to report for the so-called "work" camp Westerbork . Refusal can result in being sent to a prison camp. The majority of Jews obey the call-up to report for the "work" camps. Fleeing the Netherlands is almost impossible because neighboring countries are also occupied. To avoid deportation, Jews must arrange a hiding place with non-Jews. Such hiding places are difficult to find, but Anne's parents see the possibility of going into hiding in the annex of the building that houses Otto's business.

20. Anne Frank And Oskar Schindler In Memoriam
Narrative of events in the Diary of anne frank.
This site is moving - new address: Please update your links and bookmarks in time In 1942, Anne Frank and her family fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse. Over the next two years, Anne describes in her diary her frustrations at being confined, hungry, bored and the threat of discovery. Her diary ends when they are discovered in 1944 ... Since its initial publication in 1947, The Diary of Anne Frank has sold more than 25 million copies, one of the best-selling books of all time. A beloved classic since its publication, this vivid, insightful journal is a fitting memorial to the gifted Jewish teenager who died at Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in 1945. Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her marvelously detailed, engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic, quarrelsome intimacy with her parents, sister, a second family, and a middle-aged dentist who has little tolerance for Anne's vivacity. The diary's universal appeal stems from its riveting blend of the grubby particulars of life during wartime and candid discussion of emotions familiar to every adolescent. Edith and Otto Frank with their daughters Margot and Anne The story of the Frank family began in Germany in the 1920's when Otto and Edith Frank led a happy life, highlighted by the births of their daughters Margot and Anne. She and her older sister Margot, frequently spent their summer in Aachen, Germany, with their grandmother. In 1933, in response to Hitler's anti-Jewish decrees, Otto Frank opened a branch of his company, Opteka, in Amsterdam and began planning to bring his family there.
