Memories of Robert L. Forward
Physicist and science fiction author Robert Lull Forward passed away in the early morning hours of September 21, 2002, in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 70 years. Friends and colleagues and students have been invited to share their stories, thoughts, memories of Bob in this webtribute to someone who meant so much to the space exploration community. Robert L. From Ulyana Horodyskyj, a high school senior from the state of Ohio, who was mentored by Bob, and who hopes some day to become an astronaut: Pay It Forward "Don't lose hope when you're forlorn, just keep your eyes upon the skies, every night a star is born. Just remember in the darkest hour, within your heart's the power for making you… a hero too."

Mit The Flight of the Dragonfly (1984, dt. 1985

Published by Tom Doherty Associates, Inc., New York, 1992. The next day, Philippe gave Randy a briefing on what the engineers had found out about the silver ball the Silverhairs had generated. Jim Merriweather was there too, arm still in a cast. The three of them floated around a conference table, fingertips keeping them levitated at the same height in Hygiea's low gravity. ``The silver ball seems to be made of the same material as the Silverhair, but it's not alive and it doesn't seem to have any connection to a wormhole,'' reported Philippe. ``It had a negative mass of about ten tons, which gives it an approximate density of a ton per cubic centimeter.'' ``Certainly not normal material,'' said Randy. ``That's a much higher density than anything previously known.'' ``It also has a very high electrical charge,'' said Philippe. ``As it would have to ...'' said Jim Merriweather. ``What do you mean by that?'' asked randy, puzzled. ``Since this cast keeps me out of a tightsuit, I've been spending my time talking with some physics experts on Earth about the Silverhair,'' said Jim.

From ``Dragon's Egg'' , by Robert L. Forward.
Published by Ballantine Books, New York, 1980. The expedition was still six months away from Dragon's Egg, but it was time to start the activities of the automated probes that had been sent ahead by St. George. There would be a lot of work to do in preparation for their close-up view of the star. Now that they had found and identified the asteroidal bodies around the neutron star that they would need, the work could be done as easily by robot brains as human ones. The largest of the probes was really an automated factory, but its single output was very unusual monopoles. It had some monopoles on board already, both positive and negative types. These were not for output, but the seed material needed to run the monopole factory. The factory probe headed for the first of the large nickel-iron planetoids that the strong magnetic fields of the neutron star had slowed and captured during its travels. It started preparing the site while the other probes proceeded with the job of building the power supply necessary to operate the monopole factory, for the power that would be needed was so great that there was no way the factory probe could have carried the fuel. In fact, the power levels needed would exceed the total power-plant capability of the human race on Earth, Colonies, Luna, Mars, asteroids, and scientific outposts combined. Although the electrical power required was beyond the capability of those in the Solar System, this was only because they didn't have the right energy source. The Sun had been and still was very generous with its outpouring of energy; but so far the best available ways to convert that radiant energy into electricity, either with solar cells or by burning some fossilized sun energy and using it to rotate a magnetic field past some wires in a generator were still limited.

Robert L. Forward, Space Visionary and Friend of the Foundation, Dies at the Age of 70 Robert L. Forward. Photo courtesy Forward Unlimited. Los Angeles, CA, September 23, 2002 – The members of the Space Frontier Foundation lament the loss of one of the true greats of space fact and fiction, Dr. Robert L. Forward. Dr. Forward was, as his name implied, a "forward" thinker, and creator of visions of the future that inspired and excited. His careful style and gentle demeanor spoke well of the man, and his ideas made him a Visionary to those of us who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing him.
Bob was a "big idea" man, and never thought small. He championed many great ideas for humanity, especially the idea of space tethers and intergalactic travel. During his years as a writer and thinker, he tirelessly traveled the world spreading the dream that tomorrow can be a great place, and that we, as humans, have a great future among the stars.

    Robert L. Forward:Starquake
[Spoilers for Starquake and Dragon's Egg herein read with caution] First off, this is a sequel to Dragon's Egg , which I believe was Forward's first novel. I'll try to cover that in here as well, even though it's a few years since I read it... Robert L. Forward is a respected Ph.D. physicist who has done a number of papers speculating on physics near neutron stars, black holes, and such places where physics as we know it is strained to the limit. A lot of his stuff is extremely speculative, so it's only natural that he move into SF. Prose is not his main strength, though. His characters are extremely wooden, especially his humans. His aliens are a lot better. In Dragon's Egg , IIRC, a neutron star was detected entering the vicinity of the solar system. A scientific expedition was sent out to investigate it. (This is a few centuries in the future, btw.) Unbeknownst to them, life exists on the star. It is life on an incredibly small scale, both in time and in space(one "day", or rotation of the neutron star, is a fifth of a second), but the ecosystem isn't conducive to swift evolution. The arrival of the humans changes that, however... In brief, during the first day of the humans' presence near the star, a race called the cheela evolve, attain sentience, and develop civilization, in response to the humans' presence in their sky and some of their laser scanning probes.

Forward, author of such books as DRAGON'S EGG and ROCHEWORLD. Like many books given the 'hard sf' label, it is long on ideas and a bit short on plot and characterization. In this case, the problem would seem to be that Forward has packed in too many ideas for a single novel and not left himself room for the other components. This isn't surprising, as Forward is a working scientist who has either worked

His aliens are often livelier than his humans (but still are mostly juvenile). Nevertheless, I can only recall giving up on two Forward novels Timemaster (hack, ptuii!) and Martian Rainbow. I enjoy the Neat Ideas, and skim the rest. Forward is a poster child for all the virtues and vices of Hard SF. I used the bibliography from the Forward website
