Forward, Robert L(ull) (1932-2002)
Robert Forward Consulting scientist, future technologist, and author of science and science fiction who speculated about unusual forms of extraterrestrial life and proposed several novel interstellar propulsion systems. The author of Dragon's Egg (1980) and Starquake! (1985), about life on a neutron star (see gravitational life ), he explored the idea of using antiproton annihilation and laser sails for interstellar travel . Together with Robert P. Hoyt, he also developed the concept of using space tethers for powering orbital and interplanetary missions. Forward obtained a B.S. in physics from the University of Maryland (1954), an M.S. in applied physics from the University of California, Los Angeles (1955), and a Ph.D. in gravitational physics from the University of Maryland (1965). From 1956 to 1987, he worked at Hughes Aircraft Company Corporate Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, and since 1962 has also ran his own consulting company devoted to investigating new energy sources and propulsion concepts.

Professional Biography of Dr. Robert L. Forward
Dr. Robert L. Forward is a science consultant, writer, and futurist specializing in studies of exotic physical phenomena and future space exploration with an emphasis on advanced space propulsion concepts. Dr. Forward obtained his B.S. in Physics from University of Maryland in 1954, M.S. in Applied Physics from UCLA in 1958, and Ph.D. in Gravitational Physics from University of Maryland in 1965. For his thesis he built and operated the world's first bar antenna for the detection of gravitational radiation. The antenna is now at the Smithsonian museum. Dr. Forward has 40 years of experience in advanced space propulsion, experimental general relativity, gravitational and inertial sensors, low noise electronics, and space sciences. For 31 years, from 1956 until 1987, Dr. Forward worked at the Hughes Aircraft Company Research Laboratories in Malibu, California in positions of increasing responsibility, culminating with the position of Senior Scientist on the Director's staff. During that time he built and operated the world's first laser interferometer gravitational radiation detector, invented the rotating gravitational mass sensor, published over 70 technical publications , and was awarded 18 patents . He left Hughes in 1987 in order to spend more time writing and consulting under his own company, Forward Unlimited.

Robert Forward
(Redirected from Robert L. Forward Robert Lull Forward August 15 September 21 ) was a United States physicist and science fiction writer. He earned his doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1965, for the development of a bar antenna for the detection of gravitational radiation . He then went to work at Hughes Aircraft 's research labs, where he continued his research on gravity measurement and received 18 patents. He took early retirement in 1987, to focus on his fiction writing and consulting for such clients as NASA and the US Air Force Much of his research focused on the leading edges of speculative physics, but was always grounded in what he believed humans could accomplish. He worked on such projects as space tethers and space fountains solar sails (including Starwisp antimatter propulsion , and other spacecraft propulsion technologies, and did further research on more esoteric possibilities such as time travel and negative matter In addition to over 200 papers and articles, he published 11 novels. He described his first novel

Dr. Forward has 38 years of experience in advanced space propulsion, experimental general relativity, gravitational and inertial sensors, low noise electronics, and space sciences. For 31 years, from 1956 until 1987, Dr. Forward worked at the Hughes Aircraft Company Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, in positions of increasing responsibility, culminating with the position of Senior Scientist on the Director's staff. He left Hughes in 1987 in order to spend more time writing and consulting under his own company, Forward Unlimited. From 1983 to the present, Dr. Forward has had a series of contracts from the Department of Defense and NASA to explore the forefront of physics and engineering in order to find new energy sources that could produce breakthroughs in space power and propulsion. The first contract, Alternate Propulsion Energy Sources, was to conduct an intense technical assessment of the latest concepts in science and engineering that show promise of leading to a major advance in available energy sources for space power and propulsion in the 21st Century. The study resulted in the uncovering of 64 propulsion energy concepts, of which 28 were well defined enough to be selected for preliminary technical assessment. Further study narrowed the field down to six concepts that had not been known before, or had been deemed unfeasible or too far off by advanced propulsion surveys. One of these was antiproton annihilation propulsion.

RLF Starquake! Flight of the Dragonfly Rocheworld Rocheworld Return to Rocheworld Marooned on Eden Ocean under the Ice (1994) ja Rescue from Paradise Indistinguishable from Magic .

Five carefully selected people, each with the chance to earn $1 billion. The catch? They have to descend into Saturn's upper atmosphere and establish a factory that will produce meta, the fuel that powers interplanetary flight. With only enough meta to get them to Saturn, failure will cost them their lives. And all too soon the crew becomes marooned on the back of what they dub a Rukh, a 4-kilometer-long creature that swims in Saturn's upper atmosphere and has two brains, male and female. This engaging book by physicist Robert L. Forward evokes the sense of wonder of old-time science fiction.

Physicist-Science Fiction Author Robert L. Forward
Dies at 70
24 September 2002 Physicist and science fiction author Robert Lull Forward passed away in the early morning hours of September 21, 2002, in Seattle, Washington, following a valiant battle with brain cancer. He was 70 years old. Robert L. Forward in the picture featured on his website. One of the world's leading experts in exotic physics and future space travel, Forward built and operated the first bar antenna for the detection of gravitational radiation (now in the Smithsonian), worked on the matter-antimatter propulsion system concept used in Star Trek and promoted the concept of solar sailing. He authored 157 scientific papers and science texts on the possibilities of truly "boldly going" where no humans have gone before. During a more than 30-year tenure at Hughes Aircraft Company Corporate Research Laboratories in Malibu, California he created and designed spacecraft and propulsion systems that earned him numerous patents and ignited dreams of going to the stars. He also gained renown for melding his imagination to science for 11 "hard" science fiction novels, the first of which
