The Horatio Hornblower Series by C.S. Forester
    Content last modified September 1993
    Introduction
In 1927, C.S. Forester purchased three volumes of The Naval Chronicle from 1790 to 1820. For the Chronicle, officers of the Royal Navy wrote articles on strategy, seamanship, gunnery, and other professional topics of interest to their colleagues. The Chronicle for those years covered the wars with Napoleon. Reading these volumes and traveling by freighter from California to Central America allowed the germination of the character Horatio Hornblower as a member of the Royal Navy in the late eighteenth century. By the time Forester's journey brought him home to England, the former medical student-turned-writer had plotted Beat to Quarters, and it was published in 1937. A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours were published soon after, and in 1939 all three appeared as Captain Horatio Hornblower. Forester's interest in the Romantic period and the political and military maneuvers of the early 1800s continued, and the Hornblower saga was produced. Subsequent volumes in the series were sequels to the original trilogy or filled in its gaps. The episodic quality of the novels is due partly to their having appeared serially in magazines, primarily the Saturday Evening Post.

    78. C. S. Forester And Crime Fiction By Martin Edwards
    C. S. forester And Crime Fiction by Martin Edwards. This time, forester does rate a mention, albeit in the midst of a variety of curiosities and singletons .

    C. S. Forester And Crime Fiction by Martin Edwards It is strange that historians of the genre have been slow to acknowledge the notable contribution made to crime fiction by Cecil Scott Forester (1899-1966). In part, this lack of recognition may be due to the fact that Forester, whose real name was Cecil Lewis Troughton Smith, moved away from crime early in his writing career, and became celebrated as the author of books such as The Gun and The African Queen as well as the series of historical seafaring tales which featured Horatio Hornblower . It may also be because, even when creating his masterpiece of suspense, Payment Deferred , Forester evidently regarded himself as producing a "straight", realistic novel rather than as blazing a new trail for the heirs of Poe Collins and Conan Doyle . Yet today few would dispute that he was ahead of his time in the criminal field and perhaps it is not too fanciful to argue that modern chillers such as Deep Water by Patricia Highsmith and One Across, Two Down by Ruth Rendell - to take examples almost at random - fall within a tradition first established by Forester's short but remarkable debut in the genre.

12 September 2003 First, there was the Bounty. Or not first; there have been popular novels about war in the age of sail since James Fenimore Cooper's Pilot (1824). Cooper served in the U.S. Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, and wrote about a dozen nautical novels . Though he is more famous today for Natty Bumppo, he once complained that his readers clamored for "more ship!" The modern "heart of oak" genre got under way when Charles Nordhoff and James Hall published Mutiny on the Bounty and its two sequels (1932-34). The trilogy is still in print, but it has an intrinsic limitation: it tells a self-contained story. By the end of the third volume, the characters are mostly dead, and popular demand for more sequels about the adventures of Captain Bligh has been limited. The wooden-world genre needed a series hero, and C.S. Forester obliged. Forester stumbled onto Hornblower. He was supposed to be writing a pirate movie. The studio killed the pirate idea when Captain Blood got there first, but Forester got interested in high-seas derring-do, and the result was
