by Carolyn Forche
Blue Hour is an elusive book, because it is ever in pursuit of what the German poet Novalis called 'the [lost] presence beyond appearance.' The longest poem, 'On Earth,' is a transcription of mind passing from life into death, in the form of an abecedary, modeled on ancient gnostic hymns. Other poems in the book, especially 'Nocturne' and 'Blue Hour,' are lyric recoveries of the act of remembering, though the objects of memory seem to us vivid and irretrievable, the rage to summon and cling at once fierce and distracted. "The voice we hear in Blue Hour is a voice both very young and very old. It belongs to someone who has seen everything and who strives imperfectly, desperately, to be equal to what she has seen. The hunger to know is matched here by a desire to be new, totally without cynicism, open to the shocks of experience as if perpetually for the first time, though unillusioned, wise beyond any possible taint of a false or assumed innocence." 28. The Face And Place Of Poetry
April 20, 1994. carolyn forche The Poetry of Witness. Steven Ratiner. All journeys are wise when viewed with enough time and distance.
http://www.csmonitor.com/atcsmonitor/specials/poetry/p-forche.html
April 20, 1994
Carolyn Forche: The Poetry of Witness
Steven Ratiner All journeys are wise - when viewed with enough time and distance. Looking back on life's passages, the wrong turns and chance meetings, even dead-end streets can assume a place in a clear and purposeful progression. It's in the day-to-day navigation that an individual's inner compass and determination are tested. And for an artist, the sum of those daily choices, both mundane and monumental, leave an indelible mark on the character of the individual and the content of the creation. Her literary career had the most auspicious of beginnings; her first book, "Gathering the Tribes," won the Yale Younger Poets Award in 1976. A Guggenheim Fellowship followed shortly after. Trying to work her way through writer's block, she began to translate the poetry of Claribel Alegria, a Salvadoran poet living in Spain. She was invited to spend the summer in Deya, Majorca, at Alegrs home. In 1977, Forche was a young poet making her first trip away from the United States. Her friend, the writer Terrence Des Pres, insisted she make a little pilgrimage during her brief stopover in France. "Terrence said, `when you get to Paris, go to Notre Dame ... and walk across the quay and look for a black iron gate and a white stairwell."' He would not tell her beforehand what she'd find. Dragging her huge suitcase down the shadowy steps, she found herself in "the memorial to the 200,000 people who were deported from France during the shoah. There were white rooms with stone walls, poetry carved into the walls, different poets who had been in the camps. And there was a tunnel with 200,000 tiny beads of light embedded in its walls, one for each of the lives.... And you could hear the river rushing past the windows. I stayed there for a long time."

38. Carolyn Forche's Books
carolyn Forché’s debut collection, Gathering the Tribes (1976) won the forche’s most anthologized piece, “The Colonel,” relays an evening’s terror
http://www.nimblespirit.com/html/carolyn_forche_s_books.htm
The Books of Carolyn Forché Carolyn Forché’s debut collection, Gathering the Tribes won the prestigious Yale Series of Younger Poets prize and demonstrated her skill at mingling the autobiographical and the political. More lyric than her later work, the collection’s offerings range from the intensely erotic “Kalaloch” to the longest piece in the book: “Burning the Tomato Worms.” Here Forché explores the landscapes of history and memory that come to dominate her later work, but she does so through recollections of her grandmother, Anna, who emigrated from Eastern Europe. The poetic evocation of Anna’s voice combines with a vivid sense of the personal danger and political urgency of fleeing the pogroms devastating her Slovak homeland during World War II:
When time come We go quick I think What to take On her back ground wheat and straw dolls In the sack white cheese, duck blood
This ability to juxtapose political urgency against the power of mundane (yet carefully chosen) details would also serve Forché well in her second collection, the more fully realized and politically powerful The Country Between Us . The book is bracingly frank as it evokes and bears witness to the violence of the 1970s and 1980s in El Salvador. Forche’s most anthologized piece

Literary Arts Conference
Sponsored by The Milton Center
Newman University, Wichita, KS by David Wright Poet, human rights activist, and professor Carolyn Forché has been widely recognized for her ability to join her poetic sensibilities with her commitment to social and political change. Some of that recognition has come in the form of literary awards: The Yale Younger Poets Selection for Gathering the Tribes (1975); The Lannan Award for The Country Between Us (1981); and The Los Angeles Times Book Award for The Angel of History (1994). In 1994 she also edited and published Against Forgetting: Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness , a selection of work from 145 poets from around the world who, as says Forché in the introduction, “endured conditions of extremity during the twentieth-century.” For her combination of writing, editorial work and ongoing activism, Forché also received the 1998 Edita and Ira Morris Hiroshima Foundation Award for promoting peace in a cultural field. Such recognition has not come without criticism. Forché’s critics have ranged from the Reagan administration to literary reviewers and critics who see her refusal to separate poetry and politics as damaging to the quality of both.
