Comments: Fleming's James Bond was derived from Charteris' Saint, and Flint is derived from James Bond. Derek Flint is the best agent the United States has, and now they need him. Of course the fact that he has moved on, adds a bit of difficulty to bringing him in. You see he only takes an assignment if he wants to. This was the best spoof of the Super-Spy genre up until True Lies. Flint is not anomalous with Bond, he is better in every way. He has more girls, more devices (though he designed his devices himself instead of relying on a Q division), is a superb martial artist, a scientist, an animal trainer, and the ultimate gentleman. Of course, the opposition is aware of him, and they try to remove him before he can be a factor, leaving a clue for him to track down. Though Flint is too good to be true, Coburn carries the role out with just the right amount je ne sais quoi. Flint comes across as witty and charming, which is how I could describe the entire movie. It was very entertaining and I highly recommend it to anyone, expecially to fans of the Super-Spy genre.

In Like Flint - The Big Picture In this second "Flint" parody of the James Bond movies, a secret society of female villains based in the Virgin Islands kidnaps American astronauts and replaces them with members of their group to gain access to a space station that controls nuclear missiles, thus gaining control of the planet. There's only one man who can stop themand only one man who can handle them: secret Agent Derek Flint (James Coburn). Plot Thickeners As the space platform is launched from a remote island in the Caribbean, the madcap comedy begins. A group of women fashion leaders led by Lisa (Jean Hale) watches the launch through high-powered telescopes from the penthouse of the Fabulous Face beauty resort and health spa for women on a nearby island. Having reached orbit, the two astronauts finish their preliminary checkout procedure and, as they make themselves at home in the capsule, they take off their helmets revealing long, blonde tresses. They are women! Meanwhile in Washington, the President of the U.S. (Andrew Duggan) calls Lloyd Cramden (Lee J. Cobb), head of ZOWIE (Zonal Organization of World Intelligence Espionage), to congratulate him on the successful launch, and proposes a celebratory round of golf the following day. During the match, two boys pushing an older man in a wheelchair (Duggan) interrupt the game for an autograph and sneak a new ball onto the President's tee. When the President swings, the ball explodes, releasing a mysterious vapor that freezes everyone. Almost everyone, that is; the two boys reveal themselves to be women, and the main in the wheelchair is seen to be a double for the President! The women whisk the real President off to a waiting helicopter.

This time out, Flint has to untangle a web of deception involving Z.O.W.I.E. head Lloyd C. Cramden (Lee J. Cobb), The President Of The United States (Andrew Duggan) and another plot for world domination. During a round of golf with the President, Cramden finds it impossible to account for three minutes, when he was using his stopwatch to time the President’s golf swing. Taking his concerns about the missing three minutes in the life of the President to Flint, Cramden soon finds himself caught in the middle of a smear campaign designed to discredit him. Flint suspects that someone in Cramden’s agency is responsible for the ploy, and his search for the truth leads the super spy first to Moscow and then to a beauty spa in the Virgin Island, which just happens to neighbor the military base from which the U.S. government is launching a space platform. The plot of IN LIKE FLINT is just about as preposterous as many of the 007 adventures, so one is never sure just how much is an intended parody of the Bond series. The cast of

James H. Whiting 1842-1919 joined the partners. This company is said to be the company that brought automobiles to Flint. In 1903 Whiting convinced his partners to buy the Buick Motor Car Company, which at the time was very small. Whiting became President, while David Buick was General Manager. In the early years Whiting was the person who brought in all the local investors. In 1904 he persuaded William Crapo Durant to become General Manager of Buick. In 1911 Whiting and his associates sold the Flint Wagon Works to Durant. They then formed the Mason Motor Company and the Little Motor Car Company, which later were bought out by Chevrolet. Independently, Whiting formed the Whiting Motor Co. in 1911. He produced the Whiting car for two years. Often overlooked by historians, he didn't like to put himself in the public. He was a business man, not a public figure. Some say General Motors wouldn't exist if wasn't for James H. Whiting. Whiting Auditorium in the Flint Cultural Center is named in his memory. He attended Fairview Elementary, Lowell Junior High and Flint Central High School. James began his boxing career under the guidance of the late Dee Cavette and Floyd Fielder at the old Flint Interracial Community Center (FICC) on St. John Street. He was one of the best heavyweights during his time to come out of Flint. He had the skills of a Sugar Ray Robinson with a knock out punch. In 1960 he won both City and State Novice Middleweight Titles. He won the open heavyweight title in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1962. When James entered the United Stated Marines he polished his skills as a boxer, and went on to win all service championships. In four years in the United States Marines, he had a record of 49 wins and one loss. In 1963, while on leave, James won the Flint Golden Gloves finals in the heavyweight division with a KO.
