Flaubert, Gustave
born Dec. 12, 1821, Rouen, Fr.
died May 8, 1880, Croisset Novelist regarded as the prime moverfile the realist school of French literature and best known for his masterpiece, Madame Bovary (1857), a realistic portrayal of bourgeois life, which led to a trial on charges of the novel's alleged immorality. Early life and works Gustave Flaubert began his literary career at school, his first published work appearing in a little review, Le Colibri, in 1837. He early formed a close friendship with the young philosopher Alfred Le Poittevin, whose pessimistic outlook had a strong influence on him. No less strong was the impression made by the company of great surgeons and the environment of hospitals, operating theatres, and anatomy classes, with which his father's profession brought him into contact. Flaubert's intelligence, moreover, was sharpened in a general sense. He conceived a strong dislike of accepted ideas ( In November 1841 Flaubert was enrolled as a student at the Faculty of Law in Paris. At the age of 22, however, he was recognized to be suffering from a nervous disease that was taken to be epilepsy, although the essential symptoms were absent. This made him give up the study of law, with the result that henceforth he could devote all his time to literature. His father died in January 1846, and his beloved sister Caroline died in the following March after giving birth to a daughter. Flaubert then retired with his mother and his infant niece to his estate at Croisset, near Rouen, on the Seine. He was to spend nearly all the rest of his life there.

Flaubert, Gustave
Gustave Flaubert (1821-80) remains one of the most important French novelists of the nineteenth century. Although he is most often associated with the realist and naturalist movements because of his desire for authorial objectivity, his works are not so easily classified. His masterpiece, Madame Bovary (1857), is indeed a stylistic exercise in which Flaubert attempted to eliminate all authorial visibility, yet the novel manifests the influence of virtually all of the various literary movements of the period, most notably the Romanticism whose "feminine phrases" Flaubert professed to despise ( Correspondance 1:210). Instead, he advocates a doctrine of impersonality, which he sees as "the sign of Strength" (2:466). Unlike the Romantics, who sought to continually redefine the inner self, Flaubert aspired to a "grasp of the non-self and a representation of the world" (Poulet 15). Flaubert's vision of the world is, then, one that grows out of the Romantic tradition and is modified by his fundamental desire to let the text speak for itself.
Flaubert was born in Rouen, where his father was chief of surgery at the city hospital. It was in his youth in this provincial city that Flaubert developed his hatred of all that was "bourgeois," an appellation that had less to do with social class than with a limited, empty, bigoted view of the world. After studying law briefly in Paris, Flaubert was stricken in 1844 by the first of many nervous attacks that allowed him to withdraw from public life and devote himself to his writing. He had by that point formulated a rather pessimistic view of life, and thus his retreat from society caused him no great hardship. He spent the rest of his life in Croisset, outside Rouen, writing some of the most remarkable novels of his time:

Flaubert, Gustave Biography
Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) French novelist of the realist school, best-known for MADAME BOVARY (1857), a story of adultery and unhappy love affair of the provincial wife Emma Bovary. As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. "The Idea," he wrote, "exists only by virtue of its form" - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure. "Has it ever happened to you," Leon went on, "to come across some vague idea of one's own in a book, some dim image that comes back to you from afar, and as the completest expression of your own slightest sentiment?"
"I have experienced it," she replied.
"That is why," he said, "I especially love the poets. I think verse more tender than prose, and that it moves far more easily to tears."
(from Madame Bovary In 1846 Flaubert met the writer Louise Colet. They corresponded regularly and she became Flaubert's mistress although they met infrequently. Colet gave in Lui (1859) her account of their relationship. After the death of both his father and his married sister, Flaubert moved at Croisset, the family's country home near Rouen. Until he was 50 years old, Flaubert lived with his mother. The household also included his niece Caroline. His maxim was: "Be regular and orderly in your life like a bourgeois, so that you may be violent and original in your work."

Or search the encyclopaedia: Flaubert, Gustave French writer. One of the major novelists of the 19th century, he was the author of Madame Bovary (1869), and La Tentation de Saint Antoine/The Temptation of St Anthony (1874). Flaubert also wrote the short stories Trois Contes/Three Tales (1877). His dedication to art resulted in a meticulous prose style, realistic detail, and psychological depth, which is often revealed through interior monologue. Flaubert was born in Rouen. For a while he studied law, but preferred literature. In 1847 he travelled in Brittany and, from 1849 to 1851, in Greece and the Middle East, but for the greater part of his life he lived quietly with his mother and niece at his estate near Rouen. From 1846 until 1854 he was the lover of Louise Colet, but his unrequited love, at the age of 15, for Mme Elisa Schlesinger had more influence on his character. Madame Bovary , which took many years to prepare, caused a great scandal, and the author and publisher were prosecuted on a charge of violating morals, but were acquitted. In 1858 Flaubert travelled to Carthage and began a serious archaeological and historical study of its surroundings, which he made use of in his second work

GUSTAVE FLAUBERT
"You must not think that feeling is everything... Art is nothing without form." Birthplace

Rouen, France
Education
He reluctantly studied law in Paris, but abandoned his studies due to bad health.
Did you know?
An eclectically playful man, at one point in his travels he developed an obsession with the camel ("I am quite worn out trying to imitate its cry"). Close friends, including Henry James, maintained that he never matured beyond 20, when he suffered a major epileptic episode. Critical verdict The unjudgmental, ultra-realistic portrayal of adultery in Madame Bovary was considered immoral: Flaubert, his publisher and printer were all prosecuted, though they escaped conviction. Unconcerned, Flaubert remarked that "I would not like to die before having emptied a few more buckets of shit on the heads of my fellow men." Henry James called him a "novelist's novelist," while Nabokov declared that "without Flaubert there would have been no Marcel Proust, no James Joyce...
