by F Scott Fitzgerald
What we know of that unique period in American history labeled the Jazz Age has been defined by F. Scott Fitzgerald's piercing fiction. His short stories brilliantly realize an era both exploding with opportunity and seething with decadence. His prose captures the melancholy lacquered over with merriment, the corruption interlaced with the glamour, all refracted through a spectrum of human lives. Here, Caedmon has assembled an extraordinary cast of stage and screen stars to bring Fitzgerald's early work to resonant life. His characters (some passionate, some comic, some tragic) take on an extra dimension when interpreted aloud by these fine actors. This collection both honors and enhances Fitzgerald's already irreplaceable position in American letters. Each return listening will bring even more emotional impact to each story.

Fitzgerald was friends with the noted critic Edmund Wilson while both were students at Princeton University. Wilson was enormously well-read, and when Fitzgerald told him that Fitzgerald hoped to become one of the great writers, Wilson was shocked and thought he meant to be as good as Homer and Dante and Shakespeare . Actually, Fitzgerald was thinking of Booth Tarkington. Fitzgerald was the author of The Great Gatsby as well as other novels and short stories. The Great Gatsby is his one great novel. His wife, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, was also a writer. His latter years were beset with financial worries, and his wife's increasing insanity. He died in Hollywood in 1940 whilst working as a screenwriter, a profession he hated. Students will understand the following:
A part of a novel may lend itself to various oral interpretations.
For this lesson, you will need:
The Great Gatsby Divide students into groups, and assign each group to a scene. Parts of the novel that lend themselves especially well to oral interpretation are the following:
    • the dinner party
    • the rendezvous between Daisy and Gatsby at his mansion
    • the hotel scene
  • and
  • who says which words, sentences, and paragraphs and how should the lines sound?
  • Connection with the audience is important also. Students will be reading from their scripts, but whenever possible, each reader should establish eye contact with some members of the audience. After all, the students, first and foremost, are telling a story, so there should be some signs of intimacy between storytellers and audience.
  • Students in each group will need time to produce one or more versions of its script. Then they will need rehearsal time and space as well.

    Biography
    F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great American Dreamer
    F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. In novels such as Tender is the Night, This Side of Paradise , and The Great Gatsby , he captured the mood and manners of his time. He and his wife, Zelda, enjoyed a hedonistic expatriate life as they split their time between New York, Paris and the Riviera. The characters and plots he created with ethereal lyricism and social accuracy mirrored the glamorous lifestyle he led in the madcap excess of the Roaring Twenties. Through interviews with family members and confidantes, this program presents an intimate portrait of a literary giant whose life was touched by tragedy. Authors such as Tobias Wolff and Joseph Heller reflect on Fitzgerald’s legacy and lasting influence. Join BIOGRAPHY for an insightful look at F. Scott Fitzgerald—the man who gave the Jazz Age its name. F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great American Dreamer would be useful for classes on American History, Literature, Drama, and American Culture. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Vocabulary Discussion Questions

Charles Scribner's Sons published nine books by F. Scott Fitzgerald during Fitzgerald's lifetime. In addition to the first four novels, there were four volumes of short stories, Flappers and Philosophers Tales of the Jazz Age All the Sad Young Men (1926), and Taps at Reveille (1935); and one play, The Vegetable: Or, From President to Postman (1923). The story collections published by Charles Scribner's Sons contained fewer than a third of the 165 stories that appeared in major periodicals during his lifetime; now, virtually all of Fitzgerald's stories are available in hardcover collections. Fitzgerald also wrote essays and autobiographical pieces, many of which appeared in the late 1930's in Esquire and are now collected, among other places, in The Crack-Up (1945). Fitzgerald's Hollywood writing consisted mainly of collaborative efforts on scripts for films such as Gone with the Wind and Infidelity, although during his life and since his death there have been various screen adaptations of his novels and stories. In recent years, Fitzgerald's notebooks, scrapbooks, and letters have been published, and the record of his literary achievement is now nearly complete.
