Enchanted Places:
The Use of Setting in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Fiction
"This first full-length study of Fitzgerald’s domestic and urban settings not only traces the changing pattern in his artistry but also restructures the scope and depth his representation of the Jazz Age America. Exploring his parabolic imagery of home, bars, schools, city, and Hollywood, the book shows how his setting contributes toward the thematic profundity and aesthetic richness in his writing."

Introduction
This book analyzes an essential, but relatively uncultivated, part of the artistry in Fitzgerald’s fiction: his use of domestic and urban settings. Through exploring the imagery of home, bars, schools, city, and Hollywood, Fitzgerald presents a panoramic view of the social and psychological landscape of his time, a view that is philosophically adequate and aesthetically satiating. Enchanted Places is second of the series, Contributions to the Study of American Literature Table of Contents Acknowledgements

Introduction
Task Resources ... Teacher Resource
Introduction F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece, The Great Gatsby , is thought by many to be the definitive novel of the 1920s. This fascinating era, know also as the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age, was a time of great social, economic, and cultural change in America, all of which is reflected throughout the novel through by a number of parties, both large and small. You can tell much about people by their parties: their tastes, their social status, their friends, their lifestyles. And besides, who doesn't love a party?
The Task Your task for this WebQuest is to become "party planners" and collaborate to plan a Jazz Age bash worthy of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald themselves. Each of you will choose a role and you will research the 20s from the perspective of that role. After you've gathered the information and shared it with the other members of your group, you will all collaborate to create your party for the class (minus the bathtub gin, of course!).
The Process You will plan a Jazz Age party that will include appropriate entertainment, guests, attire, food and libations. In a group of four you will research the historical, cultural and social background for information which will lead you to make your choices for your party plan. Each individual will be responsible for helping to research background information with the group, gathering information regarding his/her role as well as the success of the group in planning the party.

Biography
The 1920's, also known as the Jazz Age, were wild times, and Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was its king. Although he lead one of the most wild and luxurious lifestyles of anyone during the decade, Fitzgerald was known more for his prominent works of literature, which have gained a permanent place among the American classics. Fitzgerald was born on September 29, 1896 in St. Paul Minnesota. His prename, Francis Scott Key, was given to him to honor his distant ancestor who wrote the National Anthem. Fitzgerald's father, Edward Fitzgerald, was from Maryland while his mother, Mary McQuillan, was the daugher of an Irish-Catholic immigrant. Fitzgerald entered St. Paul Academy when he was a boy, and started to write for the school newspaper when he was thirteen. During 1911-1913, he attended the Newman School, a Catholic Prep School in New Jersey. There, he met Father Sigourney Fay, who encouraged him to pursue his ambitions and to achieve personal success and distinction. Afterwards, he entered Princeton University, where he grew on his writing abilities by writing for school media. However, he neglected his studies and was put on academic probation. In 1917, Fitzgerald joined the army to fight in World War I. In June of 1918, he was assigned to Camp Sheridan in Alabama. There, he fell in love with Zelda Sayre. After being turned down during a marriage proposal due to his lack of success, Fitzgerald returned to St. Paul to begin work on his novel

MYRTLE :

FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT
, novelist, chronicler of the jazz age. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald had the good fortune—and the misfortune—to be a writer who summed up an era. The son of an alcoholic failure from Maryland and an adoring, intensely ambitious mother, he grew up acutely conscious of wealth and privilege—and of his family's exclusion from the social elite. After entering Princeton in 1913, he became a close friend of Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop and spent most of his time writing lyrics for Triangle Club theatrical productions and analyzing how to triumph over the school's intricate social rituals. He left Princeton without graduating and used it as the setting for his first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920). It was perfect literary timing. The twenties were beginning to roar, bathtub gin and flaming youth were on everyone's lips, and the handsome, witty Fitzgerald seemed to be the ideal spokesman for the decade. With his stunning southern wife, Zelda, he headed for Paris and a mythic career of drinking from hip flasks, dancing until dawn, and jumping into outdoor fountains to end the party. Behind this façade was a writer struggling to make enough money to match his extravagant lifestyle and still produce serious work. His second novel, The Beautiful and the Damned (1922), which recounted an artist's losing fight with dissipation, was badly flawed. His next

Biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald
About F. Scott Fitzgerald

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, the only son of an aristocratic father and a provincial, working-class mother. He was therefore the product of two divergent traditions: while his father's family included the author of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (after whom Fitzgerald was named), his mother's family was, in Fitzgerald's own words, "straight 1850 potato-famine Irish." As a result of this contrast, he was exceedingly ambivalent about the notion of the American dream: for him, it was at once vulgar and dazzlingly promising. It need scarcely be noted that such fascinated ambivalence is itself typically American. Like the central character of The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald had an intensely romantic imagination; he once called it "a heightened sensitivity to the promises of life." The events of Fitzgerald's own life can be seen as a struggle to realize those promises. He attended both St. Paul Academy (1908-10) and Newman School (1911-13), where his intensity and outsize enthusiasms made him extremely unpopular with the other students. Later, at Princeton University, he came close to the brilliant success of which he dreamed. He became part of the influential Triangle Club, a dramatic organization whose members were taken from the cream of high society. He also became a prominent figure in the literary life of the university and made lifelong friendships with Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop. Despite these social coups, Fitzgerald struggled academically, and eventually flunked out of Princeton.
