Alternatively, read on… Beautiful and Damned is an evocative and glittering musical set in the 1920's, telling the tragic story of Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The glamorous and fashionable couple, successful young author and stylish young wife, with their high spending, high living lifestyle, became the envy of the world. Scott christened the period The Jazz Age, and Zelda was its high priestess. However, behind the dazzling and elegant facade, a darker story awaits to be told. The conception of the show goes back to 1977 when a British singer/songwriter walked into a bookstore in Nashville, Tennessee. His name was Roger Cook Of the numerous hit songs Roger had written during a career that dates back to the 60s, perhaps he's best known for songs like the Coca Cola anthem of the 70's - I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing , Crystal Gale's signature tune Talking In Your Sleep and Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart , immortalised by Gene Pitney. Roger had moved to Nashville from his hometown Bristol, England. The library of the farmhouse he moved into had been stripped of all of its books. Visiting a local bookstore for a restocking exercise, he spotted a book taking centre stage in the bookshop window. The book ignited a passion that has stayed with him for evermore. It was a pictorial biography created from the scrapbooks and photographic albums of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. It was called The Romantic Egoists.

26. Bishop, John Peale
Article on the writer and his friendship with F. scott fitzgerald.
http://etc.princeton.edu/CampusWWW/Companion/bishop_john_peale.html
Bishop, John Peale
Bishop, John Peale '17 (1892-1944) who is remembered mainly as a friend of Scott Fitzgerald '17 and Edmund Wilson '16 deserves to be better known for his own contribution to American letters. Having postponed entering college for three years because of illness, he was twenty-one when he came to Princeton from Charles Town, West Virginia. Dean Gauss, who came to know him from his classes in French and Italian literature as well as from Bishop's work on the Nassau Lit, said that he came with ``a more carefully thought out and more accomplished mastery of the technique of English verse'' than any other undergraduate in the talented group then writing for the Lit. Scott Fitzgerald was drawn to the Lit group by his great admiration for Bishop, who became the model for Tom D'Invilliers, the patrician poet in This Side of Paradise. ``John looked the poet he was,'' Dean Gauss wrote. ``There was an air of distinction about all that he did. . . . Even as a freshman, he had a self-possession and a selfmastery which gave him the poise and bearing of a young English lord. Scott's unruly Irish temperament, his irresistible love of glamour made these aristocratic qualities something he would forever envy but never acquire and I feel confident they suggested that Burke's Peerage type of name, D'Invilliers, which he gave John in the novel.'' Edmund Wilson also greatly admired Bishop; he was later to call him the most distinguished poet ever graduated from Princeton. Bishop succeeded Wilson as managing editor of the

A Personal Reflection
by Garrison Keillor Fitzgerald in Saint Paul F. SCOTT FITZGERALD was a man of New York, of Paris, of Hollywood, but his first home is Saint Paul, where he was born on September 24, 1896. His great ambitions began here, his themes, his readiness for romance and, at the crucial moment of his life, the summer of 1919, he came home to become a writer. His novel had been rejected, he hated his job as an advertising writer, and Zelda Sayre of Montgomery, Alabama, had broken off their engagement because she thought he had no prospects, so he came back to the third-floor bedroom in his parents' row house on Summit Avenue, where he rewrote the novel and mailed it to Maxwell Perkins at Scribner's. Two weeks passed. "Then the postman rang, and that day I quit work and ran along the streets, stopping automobiles to tell friends and acquaintances about it my novel This Side of Paradise was accepted for publication. That week the postman rang and rang, and I paid off my terrible small debts, bought a suit, and woke up every morning with a world of ineffable toploftiness and promise." His Saint Paul story remains with us: the young man waiting anxiously in his parents' guest room for the bell to ring that signals sweet success and the beginning of a life he had only known in dreams.

Biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald
About F. Scott Fitzgerald

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, the only son of an aristocratic father and a provincial, working-class mother. He was therefore the product of two divergent traditions: while his father's family included the author of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (after whom Fitzgerald was named), his mother's family was, in Fitzgerald's own words, "straight 1850 potato-famine Irish." As a result of this contrast, he was exceedingly ambivalent about the notion of the American dream: for him, it was at once vulgar and dazzlingly promising. It need scarcely be noted that such fascinated ambivalence is itself typically American. Like the central character of The Great Gatsby , Fitzgerald had an intensely romantic imagination; he once called it "a heightened sensitivity to the promises of life." The events of Fitzgerald's own life can be seen as a struggle to realize those promises. He attended both St. Paul Academy (1908-10) and Newman School (1911-13), where his intensity and outsize enthusiasms made him extremely unpopular with the other students. Later, at Princeton University, he came close to the brilliant success of which he dreamed. He became part of the influential Triangle Club, a dramatic organization whose members were taken from the cream of high society. He also became a prominent figure in the literary life of the university and made lifelong friendships with Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop. Despite these social coups, Fitzgerald struggled academically, and eventually flunked out of Princeton.
