Scholars Index Complete Short Stories by Ronald Firbank , Steven Moore (Editor) Ranging from impressionistic prose poems and allegories to sardonic vignettes of high-society life, they all display Firbank's satiric eye and stylistic flair. Only a few of the stories were published commercially; most have been available only in expensive, limited editions, and four stories are published here for the first time from Firbank's manuscripts. Included in a appendix are two other pieces Firbank wrote at the same age the poem "The Wind & the Roses" and his only venture into art criticism, "An Early Flemish Painter "and detailed textual notes that give the publishing history for all the works. Edited with an Introduction by Steven Moore Complementing Dalkey Archive's edition of Firbank's Complete Short Stories Complete Plays makes available for the first time in one volume this inimitable British writer's three excursions into drama: The Mauve Tower (1904), a "dream play" reminiscent in language and setting of Oscar Wilde's "Salome" and the writings of the French symbolists; A Disciple from the Country (1907), a one-act comedy about a debutante who flirts with religion and sainthood in order to catch a husband; and The Princess Zoubaroff (1920), a three-act comedy about marriage, religion, and homosexual separatism. The latter, which has been produced in England occasionally since the 1950s, is considered to be among Firbank's major works, and yet it, like the other two plays, has not been generally available in this country until this edition was published. The plays are filled with the wit and satire for which Firbank's novels are relished; indeed, Firbank's novels relied so heavily on dialogue that the distinction between them and his plays is minimal. Consequently, those who enjoy his novels and storiesas well as those who enjoy the comic British theater tradition of Pinero, Wilde, and Cowardshould welcome this collection. Firbank, Ronald (1886-1926)
page: Although his witty, high-camp, modernist fabulations mock the late-Victorian world of bourgeois materialism and "hearty" moral earnestness, Ronald Firbank, born Arthur Annesley Ronald Firbank in London in 1886, was himself the product of a "rags to riches" Victorian success story. Although his great-grandfather was an illiterate Durham coal miner, his grandfather acquired an immense fortune as a railway contractor, which enabled his father, Sir Thomas Firbank, to become a Member of Parliament. His mother, Lady Firbank, the daughter of an Irish clergyman, was an educated and cultivated woman who, with her husband, became a renowned collector of rare prints and porcelain. Sponsor Message.
Until her death in 1924, Lady Firbank lent steadfast encouragement to her second son, which evidently helped sustain Firbank in a world he often regarded as malicious and self-serving, and which had become increasingly homophobic in outward demeanor since the prosecution of Oscar Wilde for "indecent behavior" in 1895.

~ RONALD FIRBANK ~
Ronald Firbank, whose real name was Arthur Annesley, was born in London, England in 1886. During his brief career he achieved some recognition as an innovator in satiric dialogue and narrative techniques. His books reflect his own legendary, eccentric, if not personal life, with all its bizarre characters and laced with sophisticated wit. He wrote such novels as Vainglory Inclinations Caprice Valmouth ) and The Flower Beneath the Foot ), but his most famous is probably Prancing Nigger (1924) which was originally published in England as Sorrow in Sunlight . His last novel, The Artificial Princess , although written circa 1915 was released posthumously in 1934. He is one of those British authors who apparently became strongly influenced by the writings of Aleister Crowley, but very little survives to tell of the full extent of their relationship. Since Ronald Firbank wrote many stories it is only fair to ask if he ever used Aleister Crowley as a model for any characters in his novels. This is difficult to ascertain. We do know that in his first novel, Vainglory But nowhere in this novel is there a character which has any direct bearing on the life of Crowley.

page: Santal (1921) explores the religious aspirations of a young Islamic boy. The Flower Beneath the Foot (1924), which includes a description of a party excavating "among the ruins of Chedorlahomor, a faubourg of Sodom," follows the adventures of Laura de Nazianzi, who achieves sainthood by renouncing heterosexual romance and joining the lesbian Convent of the Flaming Hood. Sorrow in Sunlight (1924), given the outrageous title Prancing Nigger in the American edition at the suggestion of Firbank's close friend Carl Van Vechten, ascribes the typical social aspirations of the lower-middle-class English to Mrs. Almadou Mouth, who migrates with her black family to the local capital of an unnamed tropical isle so that she can get her daughters into society. His last and most explicitly gay work

Ronald Firbank (1886-1926) Ronald Firbank was born out of his time. Though all his books appeared between the years 1915 and 1926, his true affinities were with the epoch of Wilde, Beardsley and The Yellow Book . It's been said that Firbank's work appeals only to a select few, even though it was the fruit of an intellectual playboy. After Uppingham , Firbank spent time at Tours and Madrid, considering the diplomatic service before plumping for Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He sat no examinations and left the University, degree-less, after two-and-a-half years. Firbank joined the Roman Catholic church, after realising that the appeal was more aesthetic than theological. In Italy, France, North Africa and the West Indies, Firbank was an enthusiastic traveller and fond of smart society. Yet all the time he was shy, in the manner of sensitive young men who are insensitively pitched into the heartier sort of public school. From 1915, Firbank's novels appeared about once a year, all characterised by archness and evasiveness - the very antheses of the public school spirit. No wonder he has appealed to aesthetes and posh renegades, plus other "Midlands Roughs" like Joe Orton.
