Timothy Irving Frederick Findley Tiff, as he was called by almost everyone who knew him was born in Toronto on October 30, 1930. At an early age, Tiff must have been touched by a muse, as he took ballet lessons aspiring to be a dancer. Very soon though, in his teens, he became a man of words other people's words as he started a career as an actor. In 1953 he was chosen to be a charter member of the Stratford Festival acting company in its inaugural season. He found acting stimulating enough to proceed to London, where he studied and graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama. His talents as an actor took him to the West End, Broadway and Moscow. During a tour of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker , Tiff's talent with words as a writer came to the attention of fellow actor and star Ruth Gordon, and of the great Mr. Wilder himself, who encouraged him to write. He returned to Canada where he continued to act, but where the writing bug must have taken over. In the early 1960's he met his lifelong partner, Bill Whitehead, himself a writer and producer who hired Tiff as an actor. That partnership gave Tiff the support he needed to give up acting and develop a career as a writer. His natural ear for dialogue gave him the ability to write screenplays (

Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel The Wars went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981. Timothy Findley received a Governor General's Award, the Canadian Authors Association Award, an ACTRA Award, the Order of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Award, and he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. Whoopi tries her hand at Piano Man
By JIM SLOTEK
Toronto Sun WHOOPI FOR FINDLEY: Apparently Whoopi Goldberg wasn't kidding about spending most of her spare time reading books while on location in Toronto.
Whoopi who fell in love with the works of Canuck author Timothy Findley while filming Norman Jewison's Bogus here bought the movie rights to The Piano Man's Daughter, Findley's "Southern Ontario Gothic" novel, and has just completed a deal with Kevin Sullivan (Avonlea) to film it.
In a break from his usual family fare, Sullivan will direct the dark tale of an illegitimate, troubled young woman in turn-of-the-century Toronto, the offspring of her mother's affair with a piano seller. Filming could start as early as summer '96 or as late as spring '98.
It's Whoopi's first producing stint, and she won't be acting in the film. "She did want to act in it," Sullivan says, "but frankly it's not written for blacks. It's a pretty white story. This is a film she just wants to watch and enjoy."
Technically, it's not Sullivan's feature directing debut. "Looking For Miracles (the Disney Home Video coming-of-age drama) had a bit of a theatrical release," he says. "And of course, Anne Of Green Gables played theatres in Japan. But this is a major undertaking and I'm excited."

Review by Rory Runnels. excerpt:
Famous Last Words emphasizes interpretations and the multiple possibilities for making meanings that arise from our individual interactions with its textual constructions of our past. But it also insists that interpretation must lead eventually to judgement, to the taking of stand, through for each of us that stand may be on different ground. In Writing on Trial , Diana Brydon, who teaches Canadian and postcolonial literature at the University of Guelph, examines Timothy Findley's Famous Last Words. This short book in the "Canadian Writers Series" is both a good critical examination from Brydon, herself, as well as a wide-ranging look at other critical opinions assembled by her (though some of these don't get as full a hearing as this reviewer would like). In the film Metropolitan , which is about a group of Manhattan rich kids, one of the boys explains that he only reads good literary criticism but not the book the criticism is about. With good literary criticism, he says, it's like reading the book without having to read it. The girl to whom he expounds this theory is incredulous and contemptuous of it. I suspect Ms. Brydon would be as well, though it is a popular assumption today. The clear assumption from her study is that you should have read

Spadework Review Summary Set in the times of Kosovo and the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, the novel describes about a month in the life of the Kincaids. Jane and her husband Griff work in the theatre business in Stratford, Ontario. Jane does props while Griff is a budding actor. Griff gets into a homosexual relationship with his director so that he can prevent losing the good parts for next year's Stratford Theatre festival. He hides this relationship from his wife, resulting in his gradual withdrawal from the family, his wife alcohol abuse, and his son's mental damage. Jane searches for the truth, thinking that there is another woman, but develops a crush on the Bell Telephone repair man. The novel describes the mental turmoil of all parties as the Kincaid family falls apart.

Timothy Findley's "Spadework" doesn't conform to any specific type or genre in literary fiction. To begin with, it's most certainly not a murder mystery or thriller the blurb suggests it is - Penguin Books, its UK publisher, should be rapped for being misleading. So, what kind of book is it ? A tale of marital breakdown, lust and ambition among members of a theatrical community in Ontario ? Hard to say. But love - all sorts of love - takes centre stage in "Spadework". There's conjugal love be...

Pilgrim: A Novel

Timothy Findley's Pilgrim is the story of a man who can't die even though he tries over and over to kill himself. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, in 1912 he's placed in a Zurich clinic where Carl Gustav Jung is hard as work trying to determine the perimeter of the collective unconscious. For Jung, this man becomes an embodiment of the psyche's mystery. Claiming to have no past history but to have simply arrived one day at consciousness, Pilgrim lives in a limbo outside individuality and subjectiv...

Chapter One
Stratford, Ontario, Thursday, June 25, 1998 Swirling people. Lights. Music. Enough to make a person dizzy. This was only the beginning. Then you had to get through the doors, hand over your tickets to someone you could barely see in the crush and, after that, find your seat. Opening night — and nothing in the world to equal it. The audience radiant with expectation-the actors sick with apprehension. Everyone — as the saying goes — was there — all the stars, all the rich, all the Festival Board and staff — the artistic directorhis assistant — the designer, the composer, the lighting and costume designers, the mass of visiting actors, writers, directors . . . And the critics, all of whom were attempting — as always, without success — to maintain anonymity. Who -me? They were somewhat overshadowed by the simultaneous presence of the Governor General and the multiple rumors of visiting actors Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson and Jude Law. (These rumors seldom proved to be correct, but on occasion, some were true.) Nonetheless, the critics meticulously found their way to their aisle seats and stood waiting one by one, still feigning absence, until the rest of their rows had filled.

Marie Hacene hacene@noos.fr
