    Author profile: Timothy Findley
    Timothy Findley (1930-2002)
Born in Toronto in 1930, Timothy Findley began his artistic career studying dance and then later theatre. Findley became quite successful as an actor, even acting alongside Sir Alec Guinness at the Stratford Festival in the 1950s. In fact, it was not until he became friends with the actress Ruth Gordon that Findley even considered writing as a vocation. It was after his first short story was published in The Tamarack Review , that Gordon was able to convince him that he should give up acting and concentrate on writing fiction. Findley's first success as a novelist, however, did not come in Canada. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were eventually published in Britain. This all changed, however, with The Wars (1977). Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981. Since then he has published five more novels, each helping to establish his reputation as one of Canada's most popular and beloved novelists.

    BIOGRAPHY
Timothy Findley was born in 1930 in the fashionable Rosedale district of Toronto. As a young man, he knew that he wanted to be an artist. Despite his family's misgivings, he began to study dance and later, with considerable success, acting. It was while performing in the London cast of The Matchmaker that he first met the actress Ruth Gordon and the writer Thornton Wilder. Both remained lifelong friends with Findley, and convinced him that his true vocation lay in writing. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were virtually ignored by the Canadian press. It was only with his third novel, The Wars (1977), that Findley received both recognition as a major Canadian writer and the Governor General's Literary Award. During this early stage of his writing career, Findley also wrote scripts for television, radio and film. His most noteworthy successes came with the television series The Whiteoaks of Jalna and The National Dream ; for the latter, he received an ACTRA award for co- writing with his partner, William Whitehead.

Timothy Findley almost died of pneumonia before he was two, and he continued to have serious illnesses throughout his childhood. He had lengthy periods in hospital or convalescing at home and he used the time in reading. He was aware of his homosexuality early in his adolescence. At the age of 16 he left school hoping to become a ballet dancer, but he was thwarted by a bad back and turned to acting in 1948. In 1953 he acted in the inaugural season of the Shakespearean festival at Stratford, Ontario. During this time he made friends with Tyrone Guthrie and Alec Guinness and as a result he moved to London and attended the Central School of Speech and Drama. Buy it online Read January Magazine 's final tribute to Timothy Findley as well as our last interview. Read a review of Pilgrim by Timothy Findley "I don't believe in theory. I don't talk about it. Nothing is ever plotted along the lines of any given theory because that would kill the writing. Then you're writing for another reason. And you have to force your storyline and force your characters into a mold. And why do that? You've killed half the impetus of what writing is about. Which is about exploring. Exploration. You're exploring the people you write and they develop under your hand and become whole." The first time I interviewed Timothy Findley was in 1995 while he was promoting his splendid novel, The Piano Man's Daughter . Findley took the opportunity to introduce me to a lovely white Zinfandel. A Californian. As crisp as the late summer day was hot and so lovely on the palate, it melted: if a wine can be said to melt.
At our most recent meeting, Findley introduced me to another lovely wine. We were in the lounge of the Hotel Vancouver (the last bastion of civilized smoking in that city. And Findley did rather a lot of that.) and he pressed a glass of an astonishing Australian red on me from his own decanter. "Wolf Blass," he intoned as only Findley can intone. "Don't forget to ask for 'Yellow Label'."

    Timothy Findley was severely embarrassed
one morning when someone found him sniffing rocks and seaweed on a beach in British Columbia. He was searching for authenticity, this time trying to experience what an animal might sense for his novel Not Wanted on the Voyage , a mythical story of the occupants of Noah’s ark. Findley, “Tiff” to his many friends, was one of Canada's most celebrated writers, earning international acclaim as a master storyteller. Among his memorable works: The Wars, Famous Last Words, The Piano Man's Daughter, The Telling of Lies, Pilgrim and the play Elizabeth Rex. His most recent novel, Spadework , appeared in the fall of 2001.
