Henry Fielding , the eldest of seven children, was born on April 22, 1707, at Sharpham Park, in Somerset, England. He was the son of General Edmund Fielding, His mother, Sarah Gould Fielding, was the daughter of a judge. Their marriage had been highly disapproved of by Sarah's parents on the grounds that Edmund was too poor and could not even manage what little money he did have. When Henry was two, his father ‘retired’ to an estate near East Stour in Dorset, where he was unsuccessful as a gentleman farmer and where Sarah Gould Fielding died when Henry was just ten years old. Henry had been raised by his father to dislike Catholics, so it is ironic that when two years later his father remarried a woman to kept an eating-house she was an Italian Henry's father and his maternal grandmother, Lady Gould, battled for custody of the children. His grandmother eventually sued for custody of Henry and his siblings, and won . Edmund eventually died in a debtor's prison, leaving behind an estate valued at five pounds. Apparently his wife's parents were on to something. It should be noted that Edmund spelled his name Feilding in the belief that it was the more aristocratic form.

"A massive head, lion locks,close-lidded eye sockets." This describes the oil on canvas portrait by Nathaniel Hone of Sir John Fielding at the age of 41 is one of many that can be found in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Born during the hard London winter of 1721, and blind either at birth or blinded in an accident when he was 19 years of age, John Fielding was the the son of Gen. Fielding by his second wife and younger half brother of Henry Fielding. (Best remembered as the author of Tom Jones and a noted playwright, but also a magistrate of London's Bow Street Court)
In 1748, London was a hot bed of crime, filled with gangs of thieves and cut purses who operated in the light of day as well as the dark of night.
In response to these problems and as part of a plan to restore law and order to a crime-ridden London, Henry Fielding was made first a justice of the peace and later a magistrate. As magistrate, Henry with his blind half brother John,(Appointed magistrate as Henry's assistant in 1750) helped to build the first professionalized police organization. The Bow Street Runners.
Replacing watchmen who would just stay in their watch boxes, The Bow Street Runners actually patroled the streets. This was a huge advancement in policing because of their mobility.

Fielding, Henry. Bertrand A. Goldgar, introd. and commentary; Hugh Amory, text ed.
Volume Three of Henry Fielding's Miscellanies is devoted entirely to one of his major works of fiction, The History of the Life of the late Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great. Although its titular hero was a "thief-taker" hanged in 1725, Jonathan Wild is not a criminal biography but rather an ironic political satire on false greatness. Like others in the Wesleyan Fielding series, the present edition, which follows the original version of 1743 rather than Fielding's later revision, includes an historical introduction, an authoritative text and textual introduction, and full explanatory notes. The volume also includes, for the first time in a modern edition, Fielding's list of subscribers to the Miscellanies, along with detailed biographical notes and an analysis of the subscription list by the textual editor.
Bertrand Goldgar is Professor of English at Lawrence University. Hugh Amory is Senior Rare Books Cataloger (retired) at the Houghton Library, Harvard University. Wesleyan Edition of the Works of Henry Fielding
