This novel starts out in Mexico as the conquistadors are obliterating the Aztecs. After a brief interlude with a conquistador and an Aztec princess, we are in Mexico City still, but far in the future. We immediately meet Azucena, an astroanalyst, who with the help of a gaurdian angel help people put the karma of their past lives into balance. She is going to meet her twin soul and true love, Rodrigo. Soon after meeting him, however, she loses him and begins a journey through many lifetimes to help all the people of the world learn the Law of Love. There were several interesting concepts in this book that I found both entertaining and enjoyable. Whenever Azucena wanted to regress to a past life, she would listen to her CD player. A CD with the same tracks that she listened to was included so that the reader could hear what she was hearing. The past lives were also done in wonderful color illustrations by Spanish artist Miguelano Prado showing exactly what she was experiencing. While the New Age talk may throw some people off, I found the book very entertaining and enjoyable. I would recommend this to anyone looking for something a little bit different to read.

In BETWEEN TWO FIRES, Laura Esquivel, the author of LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE, has collected a number of her shorter writings, including stories, articles, and speeches. The role of food in relationships, both familial and romantic, is at the heart of BETWEEN TWO FIRES, but Esquivel's book also has a decidedly political stance, as many of the pieces deal with her belief in the need for a "New Man."
These two important themes are revealed in the book's first piece, "At the Hearth," a speech Esquivel delivered at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City in January of 1993 after being named "Woman of the Year" for 1992. Esquivel's belief that the preparation of food is a spiritual act is clear from the very beginning:
"I spent the first years of my life beside the hearth in my mother's and grandmother's kitchens, seeing how these wise women, upon entering those sacred places, became priestesses, great alchemists who dealt with water, air, fire, earth - the four basic elements that comprise the entire universe."

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel: what a wonderful book this was! It was very short (I read it in one day), but absolutely engrossing from the start. A fabulous mixture of love, romance, fairy tale, and recipes. The book tells the story of Mama Elena and her three daughters - Rosaura, Gertrudis, and Tita, the youngest. When Tita turns fifteen she wishes to be married, but family tradition dictates that the youngest daughter must never marry and look after her mother until the day she dies. Pedro, the boy in love with Tita, in turn marries Rosaura so he can be near the woman he loves. This leads to all sorts of complications and events that no one could predict. The novel has the same sort of feel as Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic . For example, the sadness of that Tita feels while cooking causes an entire wedding party to experience longing and unhappiness simply by eating her food. I also enjoyed that included in each chapter was a recipe for the dish that was being prepared. I'm not a cook, but I found it fascinating nonetheless.

Soon after meeting him, however, she loses him and begins a journey through many lifetimes to help all the people of the world learn the Law of Love. At first, going from ancient Mexico to futuristic Mexico threw me off. I also felt a bit lost since the book starts talking about Azucena being an astroanalyst, but I wasn't sure what that was. I quickly picked up on everything and enjoyed the story quite a bit. The occasional chapters from both a gaurdian angel and a demon always interrupted me from the story - they would always jolt me to reality. There were several interesting concepts in this book that I found both entertaining and enjoyable. Whenever Azucena wanted to regress to a past life, she would listen to her CD player. From the moment he is born, laughing instead of crying like other babies, Júbilo has a special talent for spreading joy. No one can resist his charm and good humor, and his very presence seems to ease tension and encourage harmony in everyone around him. But Júbilo has another, more mysterious gift: he can hear the sand dunes singing; he can understand the whispers of insects; he can decipher what is in people's hearts, even when they cannot.
Harnessing these remarkable powers, Júbilo becomes an interpreter, first for the warring factions within his own family, and later as a telegraph operator, often translating words of spite or confusion into words of respect and love, quietly spreading peace.
But now the telegraph lies abandoned, obsolete as a form of communication in the electronic age, and Júbilo lies on his deathbed, mute, blind, and estranged from his beloved wife, Lucha, who refuses to speak to him. A secret tragedy has torn apart their sensuous and loving marriage, and only their daughter, imitating what she has learned from her father about interpreting the truth of the heart, can bring reconciliation to her parents before it is too late. top of the page As a child, Júbilo can hear silent words behind the words his mother and grandmother speak, and knows that these silent words represent repressed desires. He considers it his job to translate these repressed desires into a language of emotion. Are these women truly repressing their desire to get along, or is Júbilo projecting his own childish need for them to get along? Since his interpretations cause harmony, does it matter? To what extent do you consider Júbilo's interpretations meddling?

91. La Jornada 13 De Noviembre De 1995 Laura Esquivel, Al Rescate Del

http://www.jornada.unam.mx/1995/nov95/951113/ESQUICLW-067.html
No. Tampoco variaron mis objetivos. Allá me pierdo. Después puedo ponerme a escribir.

Laura Esquivel,
Like Water for Chocolate
(Doubleday, 1992)
I'm a greedy little bugger, really. So when novels come with "extras," I jump for joy. Laura Esquivel's first novel, Like Water for Chocolate , is one such novel: the cover blurb describes it as "a novel in monthly installments with recipes, romances, and home remedies." Tita was born and raised in the kitchen; many of her joys and sadnesses revolve around food. As the youngest of three daughters, Tita is dismayed that her love for Pedro must be denied so that she can continue a family tradition: as the youngest daughter, she must take care of her mother until she dies. Naturally, she seeks the refuge of the kitchen, immersing herself in preparing age-old recipes for family meals and celebrations. Each chapter opens with a recipe, usually for a dish that figures into the events of the chapter. The preparation of each dish sparks a type of "kitchen magic" any time Tita is present. As a result, many of the dishes have unexpected results on the members of the family, thus setting into motions events which will test Tita's love and her devotion to her family and Pedro. Esquivel's novel is a fresh combination of love, food and Mexican tradition prepared and served from a delightfully rich point-of-view. The translation by Carol and Thomas Christensen is excellent (as far as my mediocre Spanish can tell); the subtle nuances of Mexican oral storytelling are kept intact, and the writing simmers with flavor.
