EGGERS, Dave. You Shall Know Our Velocity. (London): (Hamish Hamilton) (2003). The first British edition of the second book, first novel, by the editor of McSweeney's and the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius . In a slightly smaller format than the American edition and still 20 pages shorter. Casual examination reveals changes to the final sentences. Fine without dust jacket, as issued. (ELIOT, T.S.). "The Wasteland" in The Dial , Vol. LXXIII, No. 5. (NY): The Dial, 1922. The American first appearance of Eliot's landmark poem, considered by many the single most important poem of the 20th century. Precedes all book publications. Library stamps on cover and perhaps a half dozen pages, including the first page of the Eliot piece; foxing to one page margin; shallow corner chipping to front cover; rear cover detached but present; some spine letters missing; signatures clean and tight; a good copy in wrappers. ENGLANDER, Nathan.

Louise Erdrich: 2001 Artist of the Year
John Habich, Star Tribune December 30, 2001 L ouise Erdrich's accomplishments in 2001 proved almost as remarkable as those of the indefatigably eccentric characters in her books. Erdrich, 47, capped a long career of insightful stories about American Indians with "The Last Report of the Miracles at Little No Horse," a novel that was a finalist for the National Book Award and made many critics' best-of-the-year rosters. Not far from her Minneapolis home, she oversaw the first full year of operation of BirchBark bookstore, with its bubbling schedule of events focused largely on American Indian culture. Erdrich's stalwart reputation was underscored this year when her 1998 novel, "The Antelope Wife," was chosen by the University of St. Thomas as the school's "common text," read by more than 900 students in literature courses. Hometown crowds packed events at which she introduced lesser-known scribes, attesting to her popularity. She gave interviews with a new baby on her hip while her older daughters helped run the store, balancing her grand career with family life, whose incredible variations and messy adventures form the backbone of her writing. In Erdrich's fiction, joy and grief grow from commingled roots; love begets loss, and death provokes a surging need to start anew. Four years after the suicide of Michael Dorris, her husband and writing partner, Erdrich is contributing work of value from her neighborhood to the annals of world literature.

Revisioning History through Literary Characters:
Louise Erdrich's Pauline and Toni Morrison's Beloved
Marie Nigro,
Lincoln University
The history of the westward movement of European culture in the United States is often told as the "glory of winning the West." Overlooked in that myth is the fact that the winning was at the expense of Native Americans. Likewise, the horrors of slavery are commonly dismissed with comments such as, "it's over; it's done; let's put it all behind us." However two authors force us to confront a different version of reality, one that is uncomfortable-one that many might wish to ignore. Toni Morrison's Beloved and Louise Erdrich's Tracks are books that demonstrate how history is not over and done with. By giving voice to previously silenced stories told by women who have little power over their lives' destinies they allow us to re-vision history. Henry Louis Gates warns that we must not read to understand Africa (and by extension, Native America) through the cultural eyes of Europe and the West. The late Michael Dorris, Native American author and professor at Dartmouth College and husband of Louise Erdrich, takes issue with American history as taught in public schools today. He says: [S]tudents are given the erroneous impression that the few people who did live here in the Americas before European contact were quickly dispatched to the Happy Hunting Ground by conflict with stalwart pioneers and Calvarymen. Such a view of the past, clearly at odds with well documented facts, not only serves to reinforce the myth of Indian aggressiveness and bellicosity but it further suggests that Indians got what they deserved. In addition, by picturing Indians as warlike and dangerous, Euro-American ancestors reap honor by having vanquished them (

Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian , Louise Erdrich's Love Medicine , and the (De)Mythologizing of the American West Jason P. Mitchell "Fighting his way with knife and gun," the Texas cowboy was evolved, a fearless rider, a workman of sublime self-confidence, unequaled in the technique and tricks of "cowpunching," the most accurate on the trigger and the last to leave untasted the glass which the bartender silently refilled. When the northern trails became an institution the Texan was trail-boss and straw-boss; and as boss he was a dictator. As an underling he was not so successful in the north; with a Yankee boss, or worse yet an Englishman, he cherished a studied disregard for authority, and an assured satisfaction in the superiority of his own ways. His loyalty to his profession made him willing to do any amount of work in the line of duty; but he would have defended with his gun his right to sing as he rode: Oh, I am a Texas cowboy
