Tell us about your childhood, your religious upbringing and how you came to reject it.
I grew up in an Orthodox home in New York, where I had a right-wing, xenophobic, anti-intellectual, fire-and-brimstone, free-thought free, shtetl-mentality, substandard education. And so I began to look elsewhere; I began to read literature. Simple as that.
Was your move to secular life an epiphany?
No, very far from it. I think I took the route Maimonides recommended. I was religious for many years after I started questioning my world. I stayed religious until the first week I set foot in Israel, when I was nineteen. That was the first time I ever got into a car on the Sabbath. I had started veering; I went to a secular college, though I stayed religious there.
Was that a major culture shock for you?
College was unbelievably eye-opening, coming from where I did, though all it really consisted of was meeting my neighbors from Long Island. It wasn't exactly the U.N. up there. But, at the time, it was wonderful.
You then moved to Israel and became secular, yet you choose to live in the most religious city in the country, if not the world.

N athan Englander's first collection of stories, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, will be published next month by Alfred A. Knopf, in what Publisher's Weekly has called "one of the most bruited debuts of the year" a reference to the rumors of the very large advance paid to Englander. But, PW continued, "such brouhaha shouldn't cloud the achievement of these unpretentious and powerful stories." The characterization is apt, as Englander's story in the March Atlantic "The Gilgul of Park Avenue" ) reveals. "Gilgul" is a representative example of Englander's talent for storytelling, his lively sense of humor, and his profound connection to his Jewish heritage.
Englander, twenty-nine, has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa, and has recently moved from the United States to Jerusalem, where, thanks to his book advance, he has installed himself in a bright, tidy apartment perched on a hill overlooking the Israel Supreme Court and the Knesset. He recently spoke to The Atlantic 's Lucie Prinz, who was the first reader at the magazine to come across his work.

Campus Center 375 Nathan Englander is the author of For the Relief of Unbearable Urges (1999), a debut collection of nine short stories heralded by many writers and critics as one of the most satisfying and original volumes of short fiction to have emerged in some time. The stories are powerfully inventive and often haunting, steeped in the weight of Jewish history and in the customs of Orthodox life. What makes these stories remarkable is the largeness of their spirita spirit that finds in doubt a doorway to faith, and in despair a chance for the heart to deepen. For the Relief of Unbearable Urges , but there is something much more as well, a quality of wisdom that would seem to transcend the author's twenty-seven years. As Michiko Kakutani writes in the New York Times , "Englander's voice is. . .keenly attuned to both the absurdities of life and its undertow of sadness and disappointment. Ann Beattie , have emphasized Englander's originality, "Every so often there's a new voice that entirely revitalizes the short story. It happened with Richard Ford, and with Denis Johnson, and with Thom Jones. It's happening again with Nathan Englander, whose precise, funny, heartbreaking, well-controlled but never contrived stories open a window on a fascinating landscape we might never have known was there. It's the best story collection I've read in ages."

03/26/00, G-01 By KATY MOELLER Staff Writer AUTHOR HAILED AS A FRESH VOICE ALBANY The first editor to accept one of Nathan Englander's short stories for publication described his style as "Isaac Bashevis Singer on crack." Today, four years after his first story was published, literary critics across the country are comparing Englander, a 30-year-old Long Island native who lives in Jerusalem, to renowned Jewish writers Bernard Malamud, Saul Bellow and Philip Roth. They're also praising the young author's fresh, new voice. "Mr. Englander's voice is distinctively his own daring, funny, exuberant, keenly attuned to both the absurdities of life and its undertow of sadness and disappointment," wrote Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times in a glowing review of Englander's debut collection of stories "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges." Overnight sensation Englander became something of an overnight sensation in the publishing world when his nine-story collection came out last year partly because his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, paid a remarkable $350,000 advance for the book and planned an initial printing of 30,000 copies. The book, which made many "Best Books of 1999" lists and became a bestseller, is in its 12th printing (80,000 books total). It has just been released in paperback.

It's easy to overstate the value of the Internet, but here's one instance where it comes in really handy. You don't have to take my word about this book and you don't have to buy it or check it out of the library; three of the better stories are actually available online : The Twenty-Seventh Man The Gilgul of Park Avenue ; and For the Relief of Unbearable Urges . Take a look for yourself, for free, and draw your own conclusions. Of these, I would particularly recommend Twenty-Seventh Man , which I thought was the best in this collection. Personally, I think that these three stories demonstrate both the considerable strength and the significant weakness of Englander's style. Each of the stories is built up around a clever idea : a group of writers is taken away to be executed, but an unpublished writer, accidentally included, authors their final tale; a WASP has an epiphany in a New York City taxi cab and realizes he has a Jewish soul, much to his wife's chagrin; and, an Orthodox Israeli whose wife won't sleep with him gets a dispensation from his rabbi to visit a prostitute, "for the relief of unbearable urges." These are all engaging situations, but as the stories progress, the author seems intent on torturing the characters. He writes with great humor and wit about the collision between traditional religiosity and the modern world, but in the end, each tale is pretty depressing. Now, from what the

KNOPF FICTION 191 PAGES BY JOHN PERRY T he Jews in Nathan Englander's short stories are mainly displaced persons. Some of them are the refugees one would expect to find in tales of the Soviet Union, the Holocaust and present-day Brooklyn. But most suffer a more intimate exile, dislodged from their own lives by causes mundane or miraculous hair loss, manic depression, reincarnation. Location and dislocation are central to Englander's brilliant debut collection, "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges." Despite their impressive range of settings and situations, the nine stories all fall within the terrain of Orthodox and Hasidic life. Englander never lets his treatment of this world become self-conscious or sound like travel writing; the Yiddish and Hebrew studding his pages are simply part of the landscape.
