  • Nathan Englander "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges" At the age of twenty-nine, Nathan Englander has been compared to such literary masters as Isaac Bashevis Singer, Phillip Roth, Bernard Malamud, and John Cheever. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a recipient of the Pushcart Prize. His works have appeared in Story magazine and The New Yorker. Englander grew up in New York and lives in Jerusalem. For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, his debut collection of nine stories, received widespread acclaim and immediately established Englander as a "substantial talent in short ficton" (Salon). In this book, Englander explores Hasidic and Orthodox life - from Aushwitz to present-day Brooklyn - but also focuses on the universal themes of tradition, community, and displacement. The New York Times called the collection "a volume of polished gems."

he beds were to be separated on nights forbidden to physical intimacy, but Chava Bayla hadn't pushed them together for many months. She flatly refused to sleep anywhere except on her menstrual bed and was, from the start, impervious to her husband's pleading.
"You are pure," Dov Binyamin said to the back of his wife, whoheightening his frustrationslept facing the wall.
    "I am impure."
"This is not true, Chava Bayla. It's an impossibility. And I know myself the last time you went to the ritual bath. A woman does not have her thing"
"Her thing?" Chava said. She laughed, as if she had caught him in a lie, and turned to face the room.
"A woman doesn't menstruate for so long without even a single week of clean days. And a wife does not for so long ignore her husband. It is Shabbos, a double mitzvah tonightan obligation to make love."
Chava Bayla turned back again to face her wall. She tightened her arms around herself as if in an embrace.
"You are my wife!" Dov Binyamin said.
"That was God's choice, not mine. I might also have been put on this earth as a bar of soap or a kugel. Better," she said, "better it should have been one of those."
That night Dov Binyamin slept curled up on the edge of his bedas close as he could get to his wife.

Let's clear a few things about Nathan Englander out of the way. Yes he's only 29. Then there's the reported $350,000 advance he received from Alfred A. Knopf publishers for his first book, For The Relief of Unbearable Urges, Having said all that leaves us with Englander himself, and his fiction, particularly the nine short stories contained in For the Relief of Unbearable Urges.

Nathan Englander's astonishing debut story collection, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges , is the kind of book that sends a chill up an avid reader's spine. Reading through these nine remarkable stories, it's hard to imagine that this wise and compassionate author is just twenty-nine years old. Though set in the tightly-knit world of Orthodox Judaism, the stories are universal, irreverent, and have a classic feel to them. Frequent comparisons to Bernard Malamud and Isaac Bashevis Singer are well-deserved, but Englander clearly has his own distinctive voice, full of exuberance and grace.
In "The Twenty-seventh Man" a Kafka-esque clerical error lands an unknown author in prison with twenty-six famous writers, awaiting Stalin's order for their execution. "The Tumblers," is the fable-like story of a group of Polish Jews who evade certain death at Aushwitz by getting on the wrong train, one filled with circus performers, and transforming themselves into acrobats to save their lives. In stories that span continents and display a wondrous imagination, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges dazzles and delights, heralding the debut of a truly gifted new writer.

Campus Center 375 Nathan Englander is the author of For the Relief of Unbearable Urges (1999), a debut collection of nine short stories heralded by many writers and critics as one of the most satisfying and original volumes of short fiction to have emerged in some time. The stories are powerfully inventive and often haunting, steeped in the weight of Jewish history and in the customs of Orthodox life. What makes these stories remarkable is the largeness of their spirita spirit that finds in doubt a doorway to faith, and in despair a chance for the heart to deepen. For the Relief of Unbearable Urges , but there is something much more as well, a quality of wisdom that would seem to transcend the author's twenty-seven years. As Michiko Kakutani writes in the New York Times , "Englander's voice is. . .keenly attuned to both the absurdities of life and its undertow of sadness and disappointment. Ann Beattie , have emphasized Englander's originality, "Every so often there's a new voice that entirely revitalizes the short story. It happened with Richard Ford, and with Denis Johnson, and with Thom Jones. It's happening again with Nathan Englander, whose precise, funny, heartbreaking, well-controlled but never contrived stories open a window on a fascinating landscape we might never have known was there. It's the best story collection I've read in ages."

There's good reason for my sudden shock of celebrity recognition. It seems everywhere I turn these days I come across the same brooding, sensuous publicity shot-more Roger Daltrey than Bernard Malamud. I've seen the photo in Newsweek, Time Out New York and The Village Voice. I jog down to the mailbox between breaks from writing this profile and there it is again, this time emblazoned across a postcard advertising an upcoming reading. It's not Englander's good looks that have the press all hot and bothered. Rather, it's his funny, wrenching stories of Orthodox Jewish life, not to mention the Orthodox upbringing he's since abandoned, which make for such great copy. Last summer, when the Village Voice numbered him among a few select "writers on the verge," he'd already won a prestigious Pushcart Prize for what's become the titular story of his new collection. In the past month, he's appeared in two leading venues for fiction writing, New Yorker magazine and the Atlantic Monthly. Meanwhile, Knopf released his debut collection, For The Relief of Unbearable Urges, which earned Englander a reputed $350,000 and prompted Newsweek to dub him "fiction's hot new talent." Even Ann Beattie has blessed Englander's "precise, funny, heartbreaking" stories. "It's the best story collection I've read in ages," Beattie crows on the dust jacket. That kind of buzz will likely make him this season's David Foster Wallace or Donna Tartt. Lois Rosenthal, who edits the influential journal Story, says Englander's strong craftsmanship and his ability to handle powerful subjects with a light touch, is rare among writers. In fact, it was her magazine that originally published the Pushcart prize-winning "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges."

A complete story can cover the breadth of a few moments thought or the years that are followed in an epic novel. The narrative can be light and not require great gobs of emotional commitment, or heavy enough to provoke significant contemplation from anyone who reads it. Whatever the case, the challenge is to create a complete thought: a complete story with compelling characters that you care about at least as long as the story continues. A lot of people write short stories, but few of them do it well enough to create a readership.
Nathan Englander will be one of the few. In For the Relief of Unbearable Urges the 28-year-old writer has created nine little worlds in as many tales, so complete that the images he brings and the characters he gives us will stay with many readers long after the last page is turned. Englander grew up in New York and now lives in Jerusalem, and along the way he seems to have given a great deal of thought to the emotions we all share and how they move people.

"I write what I write," Englander, who now lives in Jerusalem, says simply. "It just happens to be a world that I've spent a good part of my life in. This was what I was drawn to write about."
Time Out New York as the style of his "Gap Orthodox" community in West Hempstead, Long Island: tzitzit over khakis. Now though, he goes fringeless.
After graduation, some classmates from his modern Orthodox yeshiva went to Israel to study and returned wearing the black hats of the ultra-Orthodox. Englander went to SUNY Binghamton for college because he wanted a liberal arts education. He majored in literature and Judaic studies and graduated a secular Jew.
"Do you still study Torah?" Englander is asked at his reading.
"I need this stuff for my work," he says, and with characteristic cheek paints a picture of himself studying shoulder to shoulder with a table full of yeshiva students. But while they're dialoguing with God, he's mining material for a story.
"I need it," he says again, and grins. "I write it off."

Two story collections explore religious themes, one overtly, the other metaphorically. In Gitlin's collection, the suicide of a well-known psychiatrist, Chester Garland, prompts his estranged son, Paul Gurevitch, on a journey through his father's published and unpublished writings to discover the cause of such a desperate act. What he discovers, instead, are the deep roots of their estrangement and the father's attempts to reveal the psychology behind the facts. The published work that Paul reads is a study of the biblical stories of Abraham and Isaac and of Esau, the eldest son of Isaac, who was robbed of his birthright by his brother Jacob. Juxtaposed with this is Garland's own account, handwritten in notebooks, of an affair he had in France that tore the family apart. Gitlin provides an interesting explication of the Bible tales and deftly recasts them in a modern mode with Garland, Paul, and Andrej, the young son of Garland's lover, serving as modern-day protagonists of a tale of familial sacrifice, where an existential free will has replaced God.
