Andrena Zawinski: Poetry in Review
Then, Suddenly, by Lynn Emanuel, University of Pittsburgh Press
L ynn Emanuel's language is truly beautiful, making the reader feel at home in sounds and cadences and figures, as Eavan Boland aptly puts it. And if what makes poetry is this ability to sing out, then every line in each poem of Emanuel's latest collection resonates with the stuff of poetry, effused in an enchantment that draws the reader into a group of poems that rise tall among the best of contemporary American poetry. Emanuel crooks her finger and pulls you right into her book. In her address to the readerher first poem, Like God , which precedes the three segments of the bookshe gives you a part to play, the one with the name of Reader. In this role you become interloper and participant at once, from the very first line: "Like God,/you hover over this page, staring down on a small town..." As you become mesmerized: "But you know this story.../is really About Your Life..." the responsibility of what happens when creative mind meets text is turned over to you: ".. you, who have/ been hovering above this page, holding/ the book in your hands, like God, reading." The poems bring home the idea that a poem does not begin to mean until it has the reader and all the reader brings to it with his or her own experience. In the first part of this trilogy, in the lead poem

What is American About American Poetry?
Lynn Emanuel
Here I comes.
-Anne Lauterbach The book is the subject of the book.
-Edmond Jabes And I resented this: resented being called an American (and resented resenting it) because it seemed to make me nothing more than that, whatever that was; and I resented being called not an American, because it seemed to make me nothing.
-James Baldwin, Giovanni's Room
I think about my childhood fascination with my father sharpening his chisels against the stone wheel. The sudden static and crackle of sparks, white, cold, crisp, like carbonation that happened between the chisel and the wheel. It made me thirsty just looking at it. Once, wanting to feel that effervescence more deeply, inside me, in my body, I held the tip of my finger to the turning wheel. I watched myself ground down, I watched myself disappear behind the litle safety glass window that automatically locked into place over the wheel. Another gray day. I stoop again to the lathe of the sentence, the wheel turning, turning, noun and verb, subject and object, the perfect relentless form of it manufactured not by me but by the typesetter, the printer, by the white of the page itself. Currently, I am writing a book which is an allegory about the sentence and the page, an American allegory, an allegory of the village; I speak in an idiom, a dialect of landscape, my allegory won't let me travel beyond the national boundaries, perhaps it will not even travel beyond the boundaries of the island of a few readers. I persist in the myth of my own American anonymity, my hickishness and oaten oafishness. The very thing Poe railed against so brilliantly in his arguments for symbolism I cling to, I nurture into being, and it opens its eye on the page, in the blur of the terminal and stares at me. We look at each other, myself and the grave I have dug for myself.

If you want to get information to a lot of people with lightning speed, there's no question that e-mail is the way to do it. Along with all the jokes, chain letters and sales pitches being passed around, there are also health alerts on everything from dangerous products to deadly diseases. Many of these warnings are frightening. And most, it turns out, are false. HealthWeek's Robert Davis looks at where these rumors come from and what kind of damage they can do.
    VITAL STATISTIC
A "successful" email hoax can reach several million mailboxes within a few months.
ROBERT DAVIS, PhD: Geraldine Emanuel prefers gardening to sitting in front of a computer. In fact, she doesn't even own one. But surprisingly, it was a health alert on the Internet that recently turned her quiet life upside down. GERALDINE EMANUEL: "The bomb squad came. The hazardous material people came. The fire rescue came, and loads of policemen. We must have had about a dozen police cars here." ROBERT DAVIS, PhD:
