4: Procedures
Excerpts Peter Gizzi ODE: SALUTE TO THE NEW YORK SCHOOL 1950-1970 (A LIBRETTO) A car roars over a conversation A dish of Irish setters A little horse trots up with a letter in its mouth, which is read with eagerness as we gallop into the flame. A man signs a shovel and so he digs. And the nerve-ends evolved to cope with instant danger do not know what to tell the brain so they think about it As if nobody believes what anybody tells them, gray in the cafe and the shiny rain Bloom, flare, blink open Born eaves clump bounce But do we really need anything more to be sorry about But Ned is lazy, the monkey has to do it all. By day I sleep, an obscurantist, lost in dreams of lists. Did you ever read the wet page of the earth? File prayer tines Glee a short road across my face. Goodbye, Father! Goodbye, pupils. Goodbye, my master and my dame. Have I worn out my distracting powers to doze witless into the scape of night, empty of detail and excuse He has banged into your wall of air, your hubris His substance utters a sun above the stoves of our discourse History, what did the Rose do?

The Champ
ISBN 0-935724-66-4
The Champ (originally published in 1968) is back for a new generation of readers who will swim with delight in the Elmslie ocean. The Champ explores the mysteries of dailiness in all its beauty ("He wept wetting the apple") and terror ("A black curtain removed the hair of the champ/pretending to be the wind"). And the mysteries are never revealed but amplified by Joe Brainard's lucid flowers, chimps, pendants, cigarettes, boys, toys, and tangled weedsthe perfect one-handed accompaniment to Kenward Elmslie's opaquely glowing language. But beware! The Champ a collaborative classic of alternative lettersstill doesn't behave. It's alive and exuberant. Savor it!
Maxine Chernoff A lexical romp with an illustrative counterpoint"an annex of joys and compact tours" The Champ is several long poems, no matter how you reread it. As ever, Kenward Elmslie's mucho mouthfuls make music meaningful! A dynamic poem of enduring artfulness. Joe Brainard's drawings are giddy and disarming, presenting a world in which "magnificent silhouettes await you." Their collaborative champ is a skinny young man with glasses; shy, beautiful and articulate.

http://www.bigbridge.org/issue7/poetnburrows.htm
Nicole Burrows ODE To Kenward Elmslie
Houdinified A man's packed in light, the solitary bubblette in the loaf o'ice. Out of context, his threshold, a-taut, is, wow-like, "my brain is the key that sets me free," semiotic. Only one way out and that's thru the mouth-looks like you-know-who will have to pro-wrestle himself to out-navigate the metamorphosis of landscape. Outskirts, everywhere, effluviate. Droplets coalesce into deserts of fast-moving particles. Too much boom in the woofer obsoletes newness. Minutiate and melee. Reruns, on screens, euphoria serial. Glittering asteroid inches away, or beavers, as mandated by the Discovery Channel, damning the particulars and repeating their patterns. Tycoons menace the flip-side. Their handshakes, category five, nod with their heads. Their drinks, properly conjured, will enable them to sport, on their heads, the mandatory dress code of lampshades at approximately 11:48 p.m. At 98.9 % Fahrenheit, one of the bosses notices ice, problematically, in what is alleged to be a very dry Martini, and so the event of two contradictory substances forms, together, the necessary circumstance that allows him to-surprise, bon vivant-swallow Houdini. Everyone simultaneously believes it is the same time due to the vicarium that ensues. Varied in their abilities to feel like the man who drank Harry, AKA Ehrich, everyone eats water, solidified in cubes, and experiences the internal gutteral whirlpool that is, like trading places in a locked trunk, verisimilitude. For what's left of the evening, no one is able to, consequentially, rest in the restroom.
