Pr©sentation biographique et critique.
http://authologies.free.fr/ellroy.htm

Welcome to the Interviews section of Worldguide! You have found the January 17, 1997 interview with James Ellroy, writer of L.A. Confidential.
James Ellroy is one of the hardest hitting novelists to come down the pike in quite some time. His machine-gun style, Jazz-rhythmic cadence, and seduction with the underworld and crime have thrust him to the forefront of the genre.
His latest book, however, is hard-boiled fiction on a personal landscape: the same set of mechanics applied to the brutal murder of his mother when he was 10.

Have Comments? M ade in 1993 with the help of grants from the Austrian Department of Education and Art, and the County of Upper Austria, this film received limited theatrical release in the U.S. five years later and subsequent video sales due to the popularity of the 1997 Hollywood release of "L.A. Confidential"—which not only made up-and-comers of stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, but brought the man whose books inspired it to a deservedly larger circle of readers. James Ellroy updated the classic Raymond Chandler noir in the 1980s, first with a collection of thrillers about cops and serial killers (and serial killer cops!), then through a series of four related novels set in Los Angeles between 1947 and 1959, and informally known as "the LA quartet": The Black Dahlia The Big Nowhere LA Confidential , and White Jazz . Dark, gritty, violent, profane, and bewilderingly complicated, the books "are about obsession," Ellroy says. "I want to put as much densely packed social history into a series of novels as the farthest reaches of my brain and soul can encompass."

28. Ellroy.com - Biography
This site dedicated to crime fiction writer james ellroy, writer of LA Confidential, My Dark Places and American Tabloid.
http://www.ellroy.com/biography.htm
James Ellroy (nee Lee Earle Ellroy) was born in Los Angeles in 1948. His mother was a nurse and his father, when he did work, was an accountant, among other things. When his parents divorced in 1954, his mother got custody and moved to El Monte (a low income area in L.A). His mother was murdered there in 1958. James Ellroy's attempt to solve this still unsolved murder was the subject of his 1996 nonfiction work My Dark Places . After his mother's death, he moved in with his father. Ellroy claims to have been turned on to crime fiction by the Hardy Boys. At the age of ten, his father bought him Jack Webb's The Badge :a history of the LAPD. He became obsessed with the book and studied it repeatedly. In this book, he discovered the story of the Black Dahlia, as well as the cops and crime figures he would later write about in the L.A. Quartet. Ellroy went to high school in the largely Jewish city of Fairfax. As an attention-starved adolescent, he mailed Nazi pamphlets to girls he liked, criticized JFK and advocated the reinstatement of slavery.Amazingly, he claims to have received only one schoolyard beating for his anti-Semitic hijinks. He was a big fan of "The Fugitive" TV series in the early sixties and was obsessed with crime novels and movies in his late teens. When he wasn't reading crime novels, he was shoplifting food and porno magazines. At this time, his father suffered from a stroke and he reluctantly stepped into the caregiver role.

This brutal act and the fact that the killer was never caught inspired Ellroy's lifelong fascination with the darker corners of contemporary American life. Ellroy was expelled from school in 1965 and briefly joined the US Army before faking a nervous breakdown to get discharged. For the next 12 years he lived in and out of jail and between odd jobs, thieving, abusing various substances and devouring hundreds of crime novels. After joining Alcoholics Anonymous in 1978, Ellroy began work on his first novel Brown's Requiem , published in 1981. This was followed by a string of crime novels written under the self-chosen name James Ellroy and packed with his trademark gangster vernacular and intricate plots.
