It is to stand before a huge monument of thick, enormous stone, knowing that the weight of any one of those two-and-a-half ton rocks tumbling down would crush one in an instant. This is the weight of the world itselfÜall one's longings, one's fears, one's hardened self set down on a plateau and sculpted into the eternal shape of a flame flickering up toward heaven. In a moment I shall enter the hard heart of earth. In a moment, I shall enter into frozen fire. I am not ready to go; I will go. The stars will vanish from sight, and I will be alone in a silent grave of eternal stone, ensnared in earth, entombed alive in earth. It is not hard to imagine the fearful cry of the newly dead Osiris who calls out to the God he cannot see:

WHAT EGYPT STILL HAS TO TEACH US
By Normandi Ellis
Within the dark recesses of Ancient Egyptian tombs one often finds images of the dead seated before a burgeoning tray of cakes, fowl, onions, melons, breads and beer as if prepared to feast at a grand meal. The impression most tourists have of this image is that the ancient Egyptians looked forward to entering a heaven filled with good things to eat and drink. The second impression one has is of priests and relatives gathering to make food and beverage offerings at the tomb of the dead, in the naive belief that the soul of the corpse would actually eat this food. We make the mistake of judging Egypt by what we assume they knew. Perhaps, I think, there is more to this feasting image than a childish faith in a departed spirit that needs to be eternally fed. Perhaps, indeed, their understanding of the spiritual realm exceeds our own gross material interests. I recall the tomb portrait of an ancient woman named Nefertiabet, high priestess and daughter of a pharaoh. She sits before an offering table wearing the leopard skin that signified her initiation into the mysteries of Osiris. None but the highest office priest or priestess wore the panther skin robe, which was the emblem of having "passed through the skin," meaning of one having died and been reborn in her lifetime. Her closed hand seems to gently tap her heart, as if reminding us that the message of this feast resides there, within the breast of each soul. The feast lies spread before her, but rather than reaching for it, she meditates upon it. What could such a feast represent?

7. Interview With Normandi Ellis
From Obsidian Magazine, Copyright 19951999.
http://obsidianmagazine.com/Pages/normandi.html
AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMANDI ELLIS Normandi Ellis is the author of Awakening Osiris, her haunting translation of The Egyptian Book of the Dead. She has also written a collection of short stories, Sorrowful Mysteries, Desperate Measures, a play produced by the University of Kentucky Women Writers' Conference, and, most recently, Voice Forms, a collection of prose poetry, and Feasts of Light: Celebrations for the Seasons of Life Based on the Egyptian Goddess Festival Calendar. She conducts workshops on creative writing and the ancient Egyptian concept of spiritual bodies. Ellis also teaches creative writing in middle schools, high schools, and elementary schools as an Artist in Residence in the State of Kentucky. How did you become interested in ancient Egypt in the first place, and what led you to translate The Egyptian Book of the Dead? Since there are no accidents, I've come to think of it as ancient Egypt becoming interested in me. Why I'm not sure. What happened is that I had a friend who had been studying with the Rosicrucians, and I had not seen this fellow for several years, though we had grown up down the street from each other. In the meantime, the Vietnam War had happened, and he had been drafted. His father was a doctor and had gotten him into a medic unit, but when he found out he was going to go, he got a call from a man somewhere in Ohio who was a Rosicrucian, who said, "I understand you're going to be a medic in Vietnam and you'll be assisting souls in transition, so I'm going to teach you what I know." So he went and studied with this man.

BOILED HIM

AND ATE him... but that wasn't the end of the story, although she did live happily ever after. First, she had to throw up violently in the front yard, not once, not twice, but fourteen times for every year she'd swallowed her anger. And she had to run naked down the two-lane highway, clawing at her face, her breasts, her arms and legs until she'd torn off all her old skin and run truly naked down the highway, leaving bloody footprints. They say the trucker who saw this grim, red, raw creature trapped in his headlights ran his semi off the road and crashed into a tree. They say his last words were "My God! It was still alive!" She ran into the cellar of an old woman's house and stayed for several months in the dark, living off withering potatoes. Finally, after several weeks, she was inching her way around the basement, eating green leafy vegetables and fruits from china plates she'd found left at the top of the stairs each morning. At last she waited by the door, and when the old woman opened it and caught sight of her, she said, "So! You boiled and ate the bastard, but I see now you're still alive." She thrust some shoes and a dress through the door. "Here, put on these clothes." And when at last she opened the door and entered the room upstairs, the world was made of crinkled light, the mirrors reflected a thousand flowers and the room was filled with her fresh-fleshed sisters.

9. Excerpts From The Egyptian Book Of The Dead
translated by normandi ellis.
http://www.jbeilharz.de/ellis/egypt.html
Nut, the Sky, swallows the sun each evening and brings it forth into the world again at dawn. GIVING BREATH TO OSIRIS I am the blue egg of the Great Cackler. I am the egg of the world. I was asleep inside a mound of dirt, now I rise from a buried egg. I live, I say, I live. I smell the air. I sniff the air. I walk with my toes in the dirt. I give my family duck meat to eat. I guard the fledgling in the nest. What food there is for man in the sky, blue sky. A swallow darts and circles. I am the egg. I smell the air. I am the first-born, the light of the sky. I breathe in the presence of a powerful god, under the belly of sky, upon the shoulder of Egypt. My breath is like a child to me. My breath hangs sweet in my nostrils. I am the blue egg of the Great Cackler. I grow. I swell. I sniff air. I live there like the wing of a goose. What a journey I have made, the things I have seen. I am but one of you. In my hand I grasp the sailing mast, while my left hand trails in the water. The trees are heavy with figs and olives. A coconut drops to the ground. I have separated myself from myself to sail again on the green Nile waters. I sail to the temple where the gods have gathered to gaze at their faces in deep pools. In my boat the souls of the years sail with me. The hair stands on my head in the wind. I hear the splashing of oars like the cracking of a thin blue shell. Horus keeps one hand on the rudder. What a journey I have made, the things I have seen. We glide to the middle of the lake. Give me a cup of milk and cake or bread. Give me a jug of water and human flesh. Give me air to breathe and a strong sailing wind when I rise from the underworld.

Awakening Osiris
The Egyptian Book
of the Dead
by Normandi Ellis
The Egyptian Book of the Dead is one of the oldest and greatest classics of Western spirituality. Until now, the available translations have treated these writings as historical curiosities with little relevance to our contemporary situation. This new version, made from the hieroglyphs, approaches the Book of the Dead as a profound spiritual text capable of speaking to us today. These writings suggest that the divine realm and the human realm are not altogether separate; they remind us that the natural world, and the substance of our lives, is fashioned from the stuff of the gods. Devoted like an Egyptian scribe to the principle of "effective utterance," Normandi Ellis has produced a prose translation that reads like pure, diaphanous verse.
Reviews and Comments
"Intensely poetic, this is a rapturous work. . . . The text can be seen as an oracle book, as a book of divination." — American Book Review "Anyone reading this work cannot help but be moved by it. It comes as close to an appreciation of the themes of the soul's journey portrayed in the Egyptian Book of the Dead as any modern interpretation has, and with a poetry unmatched anywhere in literature thus far." — KMT: A Modern Journal of Ancient Egypt
