    ELIZABETH KIM
    Author of "Ten Thousand Sorrows"
Exclusive Representation by Greater Talent Network
Unflinching in her narration, Elizabeth Kim recounts a story so riveting that her audiences can capture the full power of what it means to transcend terror and overcome sorrow. Chronicled in O , Oprah Winfrey's magazine, her best-selling novel beautifully portrays the memoirs of her life as a honhyol, a mixed-race child, who was subjected to watching her mother murdered at the hands of her grandfather and uncle in a disturbingly common practice referred to as "honor killing."
As the child of an illicit union between a Korean mother and an American father, Kim was born into a culture that didn't recognize her as a person. Upon refusal to sell this honhyol daughter into a lifetime of servitude, Kim peeked out from her hiding place as her sole parent was hung from a rafter: "All I could see through the bamboo slats were her bare feet, dangling in midair. I watched those milk-white feet twitch, almost with the rhythm of the Hwagwan-mu dance, and then grow still." Left to die in a rice paddy, Kim ended up in an orphanage staring through the bars of a crib, until she was adopted by a childless Fundamentalist pastor and his wife and transported to the United States.
Unfamiliar with Western customs and language, wholly terrified that she would be "sent back" if she wasn't "good enough", "American enough," Kim was plagued by constant worry. Just as her American features marked her as an unwelcome outsider in rural Korea, her Korean features doomed her to be a foreigner in her rural American town. Replacing life in her adoptive parents' home with a physically abusive marriage, Kim found the strength to do what her mother could not do for her. With her newborn daughter in tow, Kim ran away.

Memoir of a daughter of a Korean peasant and an American GI. Ostracized from her family, her mother punished for dishonoring her family, she is sent to an orphanage and eventually adopted by an American couple. Once in America, she still doesn't escape fanaticism and prejudice.

Kim Elizabeth was born on April 22, 1978 in New York City, New York. Kim has a diverse and eclectic background in classical music, violin and piano, modern dance, ballet, gymnastics, poetry and prose, English literature and quantum physics. Kim Elizabeth is the author of NETHERWORLD, MYSTICAL EYES, IMMORTAL HEARTBEAT, FROM THE SHADOWS, as well as her graphic novel series, INTO THE NIGHT and DARK WORLD. Elizabeth's literary work ranges through a wide spectrum which embraces horror, deeply of metaphysical as well as psychological-terror ex anima-nature, dark fantasy, vampirism, gothic lure, necromancy, mysticism/ cabalistic transmutations, paranormal phenomenon, theoretical physics/hyperspace, astronomy/cosmos/ nature, spirituality/new age, science fiction, mythology, social/humanistic works and comedy, much of which is dark and satirical, unorthodox and definitely offbeat.... The youthful author, published at age 12, emerged onto the writing scene as a teenager exhibiting her extraordinary talent with her first book, MYSTICAL EYES, published overseas. Noted reviewer for the UK Press, Richard Ball, stated, in her very first book review, "The elusive images of darkness and strangeness come through eerily; I sense Edgar Allan Poe's genius in her poetry ... beyond. This young lady is going to go very far."

Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on their environment, and especially on their children, than the unlived life of the parents. Carl Jung, from Paracelsus Elizabeth Kim knows little of the Korean village where she was born, or the "official" facts of her birth such as its day, month, or year. She knows even less of her father, an American soldier in Korea who deserted her mother, her Omma. But in the four or five or six years that Kim lived in her mother's warm embrace and sheltering shadow, she came to know much about the woman whose love and sorrow, strength and resilience, rebellion and pride, and brutal murder loom large in her life. A veil of sorrow, slowly parted, is a thing of beauty, an act of faith. And in her memoir, Ten Thousand Sorrows: The Extraordinary Journey of a Korean War Orphan , author Elizabeth Kim shows us how she lifted that veil, and learned to see clearly the sorrows and joys that are the stepping-stones of her life.

They called it an "honor killing," but to Elizabeth Kim, the night she watched her grandfather and uncle hang her mother from the wooden rafter in the corner of their small Korean hut, it was cold-blooded murder. Her Omma had committed the sin of lying with an American soldier, and producing not just a bastard, but a honhyol, a mixed-race child considered worth less than nothing. After spending time in a prisonlike orphanage, Kim was adopted by a childless Fundamentalist pastor and his wife in the United States. From here, her story continues as she struggles in a culture that judges her and her Asian features as inferior. After escaping her adoptive parents' home, only to find herself in an abusive and controlling marriage, Kim finally made a break for herself by having a daughter and running away with her to a safer havensomething her Omma could not do for her. Unflinching in her narration, Kim tells of her sorrow with a steady and riveting voice, and ultimately transcends it by laying claim to all the joys to which she is entitled.

    Family Values By Elizabeth Kim
Originally published in The Recorder , June 7, 2002 Arguments before the state Supreme Court last week should raise more eyebrows over the original law they cited than about the current case being heard by the justices. In People v. Wutzke The issue before the justices was whether Wutzke's longstanding, quasi-familial relationship with the girls, who called him by such affectionate names as "Grandpa" and "Papa Jim," qualified him for a lighter sentence. In 1981 the state Legislature passed a law that should rank high in a legal Hall of Shame, granting probation for people who molest children within their own families. The idea in those legislators' minds 20 years ago was that a family should stay together, and that packing a parent off to prison wasn't in the child's best interests. What the justices are now considering is whether Wutzke meets the standard legislators had in mind when they set down the vague definition of a "relative or member of the victim's household." Prosecutors want the definition to exclude people who are not related by blood; defense attorneys want a more inclusive view that accommodates the fluid lines defining today's families.
