George Eliot, pseudonym of Mary Anne or Marian Evans, captured life with a sensitivity that encompassed an understanding of human behaviour and relationships. She was sent to boarding school from the age of five and was influenced by the strict views expressed there. She became markedly self-critical.
After writing Adam Bede , she was forced to reveal her identity as someone else claimed to be the author. The success of this novel ensured her role as a novel of repute and she became very financially secure.
She observed the effects of the Industrial Revolution in her novels, and expressed doubts about Christianity. Eliot's relationship with Lewes was controversial and due to circumstances surrounding his divorce she was never able to marry him. As a result, she was ostracised from society.
Despite this, her fame overcame circumstances of her personal life.

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/english/eliot/middlemarch/
George Eliot is among the foremost writers of her time. In spite of her gender, her looks, and her eccentric beliefs, she earned a prominent place within the Victorian literary canon. Middlemarch falls near the end of her life and career, and it clinched her financial and popular success. In researching Middlemarch, we uncovered an almost unfathomable amount of information. Middlemarch 's scope as a novel is unquestionably vast; so too is the writing on it. Therefore, this project is intended only as an introduction into the world of Middlemarch commentary and criticism. Genevieve Davis and Diana Block look into the novel's immediate critical reception. Abby Hertzmark describes the development of the 8-part novel and the history of its publication. Jennifer Kremer gives us insights into the mind and life of the soft-spoken genius, Mary Anne Evans. Each contributed an annotated bibliography for their own subject, and Bryan Wagner and Dot Gribbin examined and annotated more current critical works. Davis designed the web page and assisted Wagner and Gribbin in putting the completed project online. Please feel free to email any one of us with questions regarding individual pages.

37. Not That Dull
Brief review of The Real Life of Mary Ann Evans george eliot, Her Letters and Fiction.

Not That Dull
Sandra Howe
Staff Writer
Her life and works were often controversial, but the personal letters of the 19th-century English novelist known as George Eliot were often viewed as disappointingly dull, says Prof. Rosemarie Bodenheimer (English). Bodenheimer, however, was so fascinated by them she wrote a biography of Mary Ann Evans, the woman behind the male pseudonym. "The care with which Eliot constructed her self-representations has led many readers to reject her correspondence as inexpressive," said Bodenheimer. "But it seemed clear to me that there was a war going on within her as she tried to compose her emotions and I had to explore that battle." The Real Life of Mary Ann Evans: George Eliot, Her Letters and Fiction is the first book to demonstrate how the tensions in Evans' life fueled her writing career, according to Bodenheimer. Eliot's novels, Bodenheimer says, resonate with the struggle of being both ambitious and female in Victorian culture. By reading her letters alongside her novels, stories and poems, Bodenheimer found she was able to define the personal paradoxes that helped shape Eliot's fictional characters and narrative style. "Much writing on Eliot talks about her as an intellectual, as someone who had ideas - and she was that - but I'm talking about her as someone whose ideas were also part of an emotional economy and inseparable from it," said Bodenheimer. "I've offered a look at the way her mind actually worked, rather than at her abstract ideas."

S Amos Barton , publicado en Blackwood's Magazine en enero de 1857, siguieron otros dos en el mismo año, que aparecieron después reunidos en un libro con el título de Escenas de la vida clerical (1858). Lo firmó con el seudónimo de George Eliot y mantuvo en secreto su identidad durante muchos años. Entre sus obras más famosas se encuentran Adam Bede El molino junto al Floss (1860) y Silas Marner (1861). Son novelas que tratan de la región de Warwickshire y en gran parte están basadas en su propia vida. Sus viajes por Italia inspiraron su novela siguiente, Romola (1863), una novela histórica sobre el predicador y reformador Girolamo Savonarola y la Florencia del siglo XV. Comenzada en 1861, apareció por entregas en The Cornhill Magazine antes de publicarse en 1863. Después de terminar Romola, escribió dos destacadas novelas, Felix Holt, el Radical (1866), sobre la política inglesa, y Middlemarch (1872), que trata de la vida y responsabilidades morales de la clase media inglesa en una ciudad de provincias. Daniel Deronda (1876) es una novela en la que ataca el antisemitismo y simpatiza con el nacionalismo judío;
